Hinduism

Hinduism Hinduism began in INDIA and is still the predominant religion there today. A nomadic group, known as the Aryans, introduced Hinduism to India in the INDUS AND GANGES River Valley. As a result, this river is still sacred to Hindus. With the introduction of Hinduism, Aryans also introduced a strict social order known FIVE as the Caste System, which rigidly divided India into distinct groups of people. Page 8!

Hinduism Who are the Aryans? Nomadic group from the Caucasus Mountains who migrated into Northern India Why did they come to India? Following their food What did they bring with them?? Vedas (a sacred text) The idea of the Caste System Page 8!

The Hindu Caste System Brahmin - Priests, Academics Kshatriya Warriors, Kings LOWEST GROUP: Outside the Caste System Vaisyas - merchants, landowners Sudra - commoners, peasants, servants UNTOUCHABLES Butchers, gravediggers, trash collectors Page 8!

Strict social structure Very little or NO social mobility Determined a person s occupation & marriage partner Provided a sense of identity What is a traditional society??? ~ change occurs slowly ~ live with extended family ~ based on farming ~ usually rural areas More frequent in traditional societies Page 8!

Hinduism

Hindus are polytheistic. Their 3 most important gods are Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu.

Hindus also believe the Ganges River is sacred. All along its course, Hindus bathe in it, pay homage to their ancestors and their gods by cupping the water in their hands, lifting it and letting it fall back into the river. They offer flowers and rose petals and float shallow clay dishes filled with oil and lit with wicks. They carry small quantities of river water with them for use in rituals When a loved one dies, Hindus bring the ashes of the deceased person to the Ganges River. By bathing in it, Hindus believe it will wash away some sins.

Hindus believe in ahimsa, or that all life is sacred. No life should be harmed. Cows are sacred! They represent all of life on Earth.

Hindus believe that after many lifetimes of reincarnation, their karma will be pure enough to reach MOKSHA, which means they reach a perfect understanding of all things

Hinduism What is reincarnation? Rebirth; the belief that an individual soul or spirit is born again and again until moksha is achieved What is karma? Good or bad deeds that follow a soul from one reincarnation to the next What is dharma? The moral and religious duties that are expected of an individual Page 8!

How might the idea of reincarnation be used as a form of social control? A person is born into a caste they cannot move from that caste If good and obeys caste rules If bad and breaks caste rules Higher caste Lower caste Put this in the draw it box! In this life In next life If people follow rules of caste, their soul will reincarnate into a higher caste.

In addition to providing water for Indian agriculture, the Ganges River remains important to India because it is 1. the only source of Indian hydroelectric power 2. a sacred river for the Hindu population 3. the birthplace of the Hindu civilization 4. an unofficial boundary between Hindus and Muslims Which statement was true of the caste system in traditional India? 1. Members of different castes often intermarried. 2. Caste membership determined a person s occupation. 3. The highest caste was composed of untouchables. 4. The caste system had little effect on daily village life.
