This year-round process always welcomes new participants: those who are unbaptized; those baptized Catholic, but uncatechized, never having celebrated First Communion and Confirmation; and those baptized in another Christian tradition. Fully initiated Catholics are always needed to serve as sponsors for those interested in becoming Catholic. For more information, please contact the parish office at 512-858-5667 or office@stmartindp.org. Come and see! PASTOR S CORNER This weekend we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. An Epiphany is a revelation or manifestation. This weekend we celebrate how Christ was revealed or manifested to the Gentiles/world through the presence of the three magi. The traditional names for the three magi are Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar. In some cultures, today is when gifts are exchanged rather then on Christmas day since today is when the baby Jesus received gifts from the magi. The Gospel reading relates the story of the three Magi to use today. The three gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh that we hear in the First Reading and Gospel all tell us something important about who Jesus Christ is and the mission he would perform. Gold is a gift for a king and reminds us that Christ is our King. Frankincense is a gift for a priest since when burned it rises up to God like our prayers rising up to heaven. This is why we use incense in our Masses especially during the holiest days of the year. The gift of Frankincense tells us that Jesus is a priest. Myrrh was used in the process of burial so it signifies that Christ will die for his people and act as a sacrifice. This gift shows Christ as a prophet who will be killed by the people he prophesies for. Each of the gifts corresponds to a baptismal identity since in our baptism we are considered to be Priests, Prophets, and Kings. A special tradition on the Feast of the Epiphany is to do a blessing of one's house. This tradition comes from Germany where at each house the custom is to paint the letters "20+C+M+B+15" which are for the Latin Christus Mansionem Benedicat (Christ bless this house). At the same time the letters are the first letters of the names of the wise men: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. I encourage you to use the blessed chalk we will distribute to write this blessing on or above the entrance to your house. This weekend we will distribute blessed chalk and a card of blessing that you can use in your homes for this purpose. *************************** We have started a few new things with this New Year! On January 4th, 2015, (this Sunday) we started our Spanish 1:30 pm Mass. On January 2nd, 2015 (this past Friday) our Friday Daily Mass changed from 5:30 PM to 12 PM with confessions at 11:30 AM. The Friday Mass change and confession addition was in response to feedback given on the Parish Survey. We have a seminarian, Colby Jackson, who is with us until January 9th. Colby is a first year seminarian at Holy Trinity Seminary in the Dallas area. Colby is being given a taste of parish life so please give him a warm St. Martin de Porres welcome. We had many people who made our Christmas celebrations a success. I would like to thank all those who generously gave of their time and talent. A special thanks goes to those who gave us beautiful music so thanks to Thomas Dale, Norma Dale, Steve Fournier, Michele Van Nostrand, the Men's Schola, Children's Choir and all our choir members who so faithfully serve us on a weekly basis. I also appreciate all those who helped with our wonderful Christmas decorations and especially thank Karen Monaghan, The Knights of Columbus and all those who helped in decorating the Church. I thank Michael Monaghan, Orlando Castillo, the ushers, and all those volunteers who helped prepare the Hall for overflow mass and directed traffic during our busy masses. My gratitude also goes out to all the other liturgical ministers like our deacons, acolyte, lectors, extraordinary servers who always play an important role in keeping our liturgies running smoothly. Have a Blessed Epiphany! Fr. Charlie Society of St. Vincent de Paul Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, where the Magi find the newborn king and offer him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Together, you and the Society of SVdP can help these families know they are not alone and forgotten. We care about them as brothers and sisters in our church family. That Man is You is transforming men, families and society as it presents the vision of man fully alive! Combining the teachings of the Church and wisdom of the saints with the best research from modern science in an interactive, multimedia format, That Man is You! puts this vision within the grasp of every man. That Man is You! is a national program which began at St. Martin de Porres in September 2013. Registration is ongoing and we welcome new attendees throughout the program, which consists of 13 weeks in the spring that runs from early January 9th to April 10th. You can register by just showing up at one of the sessions or preferably by email: PauldSchez@hotmail.com. The St. Martin de Porres TMIY! program meets Friday mornings at 6:00 am in the Parish hall with coffee, breakfast and fellowship. A video presentation begins at 6:30 am sharp, then at 7:00 am attendees break up into small groups of 6-7 men for discussion and faith sharing. The program ends promptly at 7:30 am in time for a renewed start for your Friday. The Spring session for year two is starting on Friday, January 9, 2015. It is not necessary for you to have attended the Fall session to join us. Each session is for the most part independent of prior sessions and you can obtain tremendous benefits for yourself, your wife and your kids by joining NOW. The Spring session enters into the contemplative mystery of the family. We know you are busy and that is why our schedule is concise and the program material is compelling. By directly addressing the spiritual issues facing men today, the program promotes the formation of "The Great Battle Over the Family" in a very effective way. If you are looking for something for your spiritual life and wondering what you should do for Lent this year, we have a Lenten program for you will find amazing! Now is the time to join if you never have. Now is the time to return if you have been missing sessions. Wives, please help us in this effort. Get your husbands to TMIY!
