Your Financial Stewardship For the week ended December 20, 2015 Weekly Joyful Giving Envelopes... $ 24,375.00 Offertory Collection...... $ 1,490.00 Debt Reduction...... $ 2,326.00 Budgeted Weekly Joyful Giving $23,500 This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany marked by the arrival of the Magi to Bethlehem to view the baby Jesus. The word epiphany means to reveal or make manifest some hidden truth or essence. With the arrival of the Magi at the crib to view the Christ child, the truth revealed is that the Jewish Messiah (Jesus) is meant for all persons (represented by the Magi) and not only for the Jewish people. Those not of Jewish ethnic heritage like the Magi are called Gentiles and this includes many of us. The event highlights that God came into human history through the Jewish people with the intention of offering himself for the salvation of all. The day has been a major celebration since the earliest days of the Church. The Magi brought the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. These three gifts show us what we too can bring to God in our own lives. The gold represents his status as King and his Lordship over all things. Thus he is to receive our talents, earnings and gifts and they are to be laid before him for his direction, input and guidance. We showed a great offering together to the Lord with our heartfelt response to the Increased Offertory effort here at the parish. This was a very generous step of faith for many of us. Others have done this privately through generous gifts to charity and those in need. The frankincense represents Christ s divinity. Incense has been used as a reminder and offering to God and gods since ancient times. There was an Altar of Incense in the ancient Jewish Temple of Jerusalem. You and I bring our worship to him each day through our faithfulness, prayer and chosen obedience to God. This is the hidden frankincense offering in our own souls that says we believe God is real and alive in our life. Myrrh is a fragranced oil used in burial. It anticipates Jesus dead body that will need to be anointed after his death. The three women do this when they go to the body of Jesus in the tomb after his body is taken down from the Cross. The bringing of Myrrh also represents the suffering and the deaths of life that we bring to God and unite with his own suffering. Each time we do this is an opportunity to bring a value to something that otherwise would have little. Suffering united to Christ s, St. Paul teaches, not only purifies our own hearts from over attachments to this life, but can also be offered for the benefit of others spiritually. This is a very challenging Act of Faith that needs God s grace and help, in that it does not take physical pain away. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg
