Page 3 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish A Letter from the Pastor s Desk July 15, 2018 Dear Friends: By now, I hope you've had a chance to meet or hear our two new priests, Father Kevin and Father Emmanuel. I've asked Father Kevin to, among his responsibilities in the parish, take on the role of Moderator for our Parish Music Program. In this he will work closely with new Parish Music Director Elizabeth Woods. I look forward to great things happening in our parish Music Ministry with their joint efforts and enthusiasm. I'm also asking Father Emmanuel to work with Father Andiy (who arrives in late August from the Philippines) in coordinating and training of new Altar Servers. The servers we have are wonderfully dedicated and excellent in their service to the parish. But we need more boys and girls to come forward and serve at the Altar. If you have a son or daughter who you think might enjoy Altar serving, please leave a message at the rectory for Father Emmanuel so he can plan on preparing your child to serve. The rectory number is 541-3270. A word of congratulations to long-time parishioner Marty Moran on the publication of his latest book. It's called Luminaries of The Catholic University of America, and I finished reading it this week. It truly is a fascinating biographical look at some of the most impressive Church men and women in the history of our country. Martin J. Moran is the kind of writer who is clear, and truly interesting as a writer. He knows his topic and communicates it with eloquence and conviction. Congratulations, Marty, on another terrific book. If you'd like more information about Marty's book, you can reach him at mjmmartin@aol.com As many of you know, I host a weekly radio program on The Catholic Channel of Sirius/XM called Personally Speaking. It also airs on many other radio stations around the country, including our own Parish web site! On the show we try to talk about the faith and values of people in public life. One of the more interesting recent interviews was part of our 'Shepherd's Speak' series, interviewing Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops about the things they value. Bishop David O'Connell, the Bishop of Trenton, talked movingly about coping with illness. He has had much of one leg amputated because of his struggle with diabetes. It was remarkable to hear a leading American Churchman who so powerfully spoke of the struggle to see God's plan for us especially in the face of illness. Another guest we interviewed not too long ago was the actor Tab Hunter, who passed away this week. His too was a remarkable testimony of faith in the face of adversity. Born and raised as a believing and practicing Catholic, Tab Hunter was always wresting with his struggle in being both a Catholic and a homosexual person. This struggle did not discourage him from continuing to practice his faith. In fact, he attended Mass daily until the day he died. But there were times he certainly was made to feel unwelcome in our faith community. I'm so glad that Tab Hunter lived long enough to hear Pope Francis say that God loves all, straight or gay. And that the Holy Father cares only that each person try to live a good and generous life. Tab Hunter, RIP. Enjoy a beautiful and peaceful week. IN His Love, Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor

Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care. Ministry of Consolation Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes Ministry of Consolation team. The most valuable gifts we can give are those that come from the heart. The precious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one. Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this particular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and talents and being a part of this ministry s call to love and care for one another. Thank you so much to all our volunteers for embracing this beautiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260 if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your consideration. Paper Goods On occasion, the folks who come to us for food assistance will ask if we can provide help with paper products such as toilet paper or paper towels. Food donations, as you know, remain our first priority! However, it would be a helpful addition to the folks we serve if we could offer some assistance with paper goods. All donations are greatly appreciated! Thank you for all you to help those in need. Outreach is happy to accept donations of crochet hooks, knitting needles, and is especially in need of acrylic yarns in support of this effort. If you are interested in joining our group please contact Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260.

For info: 516-541-8056. SUPREME COURT NOMINEE: Pro-life leaders have expressed strong hopes for US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who has a strong record of upholding religious liberties and restrictions on abortion. He has served on the US Circuit Court of Appeals for D.C. for more than a decade and has developed an extensive record of protecting religious liberty and free speech and enforcing restrictions on abortion. Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life stated, Judge Kavanaugh s record, viewed as a whole, indicates a willingness to enforce the rights truly based on the text and history of the Constitution, while otherwise leaving policymaking in the hands of elected legislators. Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser commented, Judge Kavanaugh is an experienced, principled jurist with a strong record of protecting life and constitutional rights, as evidenced by his opinions in Garza v. Hargan and Priests for Life v. HHS. Grassroots pro-lifers in battleground states are working to urge the Senate to confirm Kavanaugh. Proabortion Republicans and pro-life Democrats are facing a huge amount of pressure from the abortion lobby. Dannenfelser stated, Vulnerable senators up for re-election this year have a choice confirm a Supreme Court justice who will respect and uphold the Constitution, or cave to pressure from the extreme abortion lobby. Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council noted, From the day Justice Kennedy retired, the Left has sought to make this vacancy all about abortion even though many other significant issues are at stake including religious freedom and free speech Judge Kavanaugh resisted the trend [to erode religious freedom] in at least two instances an HHS contraceptive mandate case and in an opinion supporting inauguration prayers Judge Kavanaugh has a long and praiseworthy history of judging as an originalist, and we look forward to having a justice with his philosophical approach on the court. Penny Nance, president and CEO of Concerned Women for America said Kavanaugh could be the deciding vote on cases to end taxpayer funding of abortions, to stop forcing people to violate their religious beliefs, to restore First Amendment rights, and to bring America closer to ending abortions. Heather Weininger, executive director of Wisconsin Right to Life said Kavanaugh understands that the role of judiciary is to interpret the law, not make the law. Kavanaugh stated after President Trump s nomination, My judicial philosophy is straightforward: A judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law. A judge must interpret statutes as written, and a judge must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history and tradition and precedent. For the past 11 years, I have taught hundreds of students, primarily at Harvard Law School. I teach that the Constitution s separation of powers protects individual liberty, and I remain grateful to the dean who hired me, Justice Elena Kagan I am proud that a majority of my law clerks have been women Tomorrow I begin meeting with members of the Senate which plays an essential role in this process. I will tell each Senator that I revere the Constitution. I believe that an independent judiciary is the crown jewel of our constitutional republic. If confirmed by the Senate, I will keep an open mind in every case, and I will always strive to preserve the Constitution of the United States and the American rule of law. Governor Cuomo signed an executive order on July 10 th directing state agencies to make rules forcing health insurers to cover all forms of contraception, including those that may cause abortions. He also urged the state legislature to pass a radical pro-abortion bill to keep abortion on demand legal if Roe is overturned. This bill would allow abortions on viable, late-term unborn babies for any health reason, a term so widely defined that basically anything would qualify. A sponsor of the bill said it would also allow for taxpayer funding of late-term abortions in many cases. Cuomo urged the State Legislature to come back into special session to pass this pro-abortion bill. Cuomo described Brett Kavanaugh as a pro-life justice who I believe, there s no question, will overturn Roe v. Wade.
