British Values! What does it mean to be British? Monday, 9 February 2015.

Where do we live?

Where do we call this group of countries?

Where do we live? We live in a group of countries called The United Kingdom! The United Kingdom or Great Britain as it is sometimes called is made up of four separate countries. Does anyone know the name of all of the four countries?

The British Isles!

The Six Nations Cup! This weekend a Rugby Union tournament started called the Six Nations cup. This tournament will be on TV over the next few weeks and will feature 3 of the countries of the United Kingdom plus: Ireland England France Scotland Italy Wales

What does it mean to be British? Most of us live in Leeds. Leeds is in West Yorkshire. West Yorkshire is in England. England is in Great Britain. Great Britain (sometimes called the United Kingdom) is in Europe. Europe is our continent. This stuff is called GEOGRAPHY!

So we are British! What does it mean to be British? We are going to think about this for part of today s gathering. Listen to this video about traditional British values: I learnt this when I was a boy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2_8n7wsif w&list=rdy2_8n7wsifw&index=20

When a Knight Won his Spurs. When a knight won his spurs in the stories of old He was gentle and brave he was gallant and bold With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand For God and for valour he rode through the land! No charger have I, and no sword by my side Yet still to adventure and battle I ride Though back into storyland giants have fled And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead! Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed Gainst the dragons of anger and the ogres of greed And let me set free with the sword of my youth From the castle of darkness, the power of the truth!

Britishness? What is it then? Does anyone know who this gentleman is?

Britishness? What is it then? It is Mr David Cameron and he is our Prime Minister. Mr Cameron is very keen on you knowing about being British and having British Values!

Being British. We all live in Britain so we all share British Values Not all of us were born in Britain but Mr Cameron (and I) feel that we should all share and value what it means to be part of this great country of ours This Great Britain! We should be proud of our country and its heritage. We should all be proud to be British.

What does it mean to be British? It means being part of something bigger than just ourselves. A bit like being part of a big team Just like our school Just like our families It s not just about me it s about us. It s about standing up for the truth and justice We call it doing the right thing, because it is the right thing to do!

BRITISH VALUES B Brave R Respectful I Imaginative T Trustworthy I Inventive S Solidarity H Hospitable

BRITISH VALUES V Valiant A Accepting L Learning U Understanding E Excellence S Strong

Your challenge Should you choose to accept it! Using one of the words associated with Britishness like BRITAIN - BRITISHNESS BRITISH - BRITISH VALUES GREAT BRITAIN - UNITED KINDGOM Or words that you associate with British Values like: TRUTH - HONOUR JUSTICE - COURAGE VALOUR - DEMOCRACY

Your challenge And do an acrostic poster like the one I did but I m sure yours will be much better! You can use some of my words but try some of your own get Mum and Dad to help too! Decorate it with things like the flags of the nations that make up the UK or images of your key words. Prizes for the best ones (which will go round school) in Lower School and Upper School.

When a Knight won his Spurs When a knight won his spurs in the stories of old. He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold. With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand For God and for valour, he rode through the land!

When a Knight won his Spurs No charger have I, and no sword by my side Yet still to adventure and battle I ride Though back into storyland giants have fled And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead!

When a Knight won his Spurs Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed. Against the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed. And let me set free with the sword of my youth; From the castle of darkness, the power of the truth!

British-ness in Action One of the things that our country is known best for the world is ENTERPRISE This is why we encourage you to be creative in your classes, to take risks and go for it. Year 6 were involved in an Enterprise activity before Christmas and made lots of money as well as learning a great deal about industry.

Sporting Success! As a nation we love our sport. The national game is Football and we have enjoyed lots of success here in recent times. Last week we won a very prestigious tournament at Leeds United and will go on to represent them at a Northern Tournament wearing LUFC kits!

Sporting Success! The London Olympics showed everyone in the world how wonderful our country was and it was a great time to be British Part of that legacy has been our involvement in lots of multi-sports activities like the skipping and the indoor athletics. We have been very successful here too so far!

ARTsAWARD! Another thing our country is very famous for is supporting the ARTs. Last night the BAFTAs were held and in that spirit we have our own Awards to give out today. These are for the ARTsAWARD which is a nationally recognised qualification.

Attendance Awards! I meant to give these awards out before I went into hospital but time beat me! Autumn 2 Attendance Champions: Lower School: 1JR with 98.61% Upper School: 3MOH with 97.23%
