PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Worship**Fellowship**Charity As we approach the end of our south Florida winter season, we have our winter residents and visitors returning up North to their homes and churches. The Saint Catherine Philoptochos Society has been blessed with their enthusiasm and charitable deeds. We thank you all. See you in the fall with God s Speed! With the upcoming Biennial Clergy Laity Convention in Nashville, TN July 3-8, 2016, there is much planning, conferences, lectures, etc. in the works. A request from National Headquarters was received to us, from Dee Nicolaou, President of the Atlanta Metropolis, to obtain 10 years (if possible) of the total financial philanthropic outreach disbursed. This would account for the donations, scholarships, etc. up and above the routine National and Metropolis annual commitments. This information will be shared for the delegation knowledge of the generous philanthropic work accomplished by Philoptochos across the nation. We were given a 2-day deadline to report this data with many apologies for the short notice. Nine (9) years of monetary donations from our chapter alone added up to $185,000. AXIOS! Congratulations to our Saint Catherine Church Philoptochos Ladies for all the successful years and for this Ecclesiastical year. IT TAKES TEAMWORK TO MAKE THE DREAM WORK REMEMBER...the last meeting for the church calendar year is TUESDAY, MAY 17th. It will be a COFFEE & PASTRY Reception. Board of Directors Meeting at 11:00am and General Meeting at 1:00pm Christos Anesti! Sophie H. Caras, President 7

AHEPA FAMILY CHARITIES OF THE PALM BEACHES CHRIST is Risen! In keeping with the spirit of the Liturgical Cycle of Lent, the members of the AHEPA Charities committee met on April 4, 2016 for the purpose of funding groups that provide services in the community related to our mission. The committee consists of Ken Spillias, Pat Pavlakos, George Matsoukas, and with input from Sister Theodosia along with George Magalios and follow up discussions with Betsy Pascal, both Ex Officio members as Presidents of AHEPA and Daughters. Funds are provided because of AHEPA s stewardship of its housing program in partnership with HUD. AHEPA 18 Apartments at 4370 Community Drive, West Palm Beach has provided excellent affordable housing for qualified seniors since its doors opened in 1995. The mission of AHEPA Family Charities which was established in 1999 is to support educational, cultural, medical, health care and social programs that enhance the dignity of all members of the community Since the year 2000, the Charity has dispersed $76,000 to local non profit groups that do work related to our mission. Place of Hope servicing foster children, Paint Your Heart Out assists elderly seniors, Palm Beach County Food Bank, Legal Aid Society, Alzheimer Community Care, Seagull Industries for the Disabled and FAU Paideia Program are some of the past recipients. We have most consistently funded healthy mothers healthy babies, which provides prenatal care to mothers in need. In the past two years the committee has made a concerted effort to learn about and to fund underfunded agencies that are making a difference in our community. Our mentors are the Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin Counties and the Quantum Foundation. This year s recipients of AHEPA Family Charities funds include: 1. Family Promise ($2,000) which provides temporary shelter, transportation, meals and comprehensive case management for families who are experiencing homelessness. They partner with local faith congregations to provide shelter. Each host congregation offers participants a place to sleep for one whole week, three to four times per year. The hosts also supply breakfast, lunch and dinner meals. Volunteers are the heart of the program. They prepare meals, tutor both children and parents, transport guests to job interviews and work. Continued on page 14... 13

They assist participants in finding jobs and housing, and share specialized skills, such as resume writing, financial planning and parenting. 2. No One Buried Alone ($1,000) is a palliative/medical care program conducted with JFK Hospital, the Catholic Diocese of the Palm Beaches and Human Services. This nonprofit was established in 2011 to provide a dignified burial for those individuals who have no one to bury them. Since the first service held in 2011, 543 individuals have been buried at Queen of Peach Catholic Cemetery. The director is Fr. Dr. Gabriel Ghanoum. 3. Speak Up For Kids ($1,000) is an advocacy program for children abused, neglected or abandoned by their parents. Trained caring adults speak up for these children before a judge decides their fate. Speak Up For Kids of Palm Beach County, Inc. is an all-volunteer nonprofit that provides financial support to the state-funded Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Program of the 15th Judicial District. In Florida, volunteer GALs serve as the eyes, ears and arms of the courts, making independent recommendations based on the individual needs of each child. There are more that 1,300 abused and neglected children in Palm Beach County. Since 2008, Speak Up has recruited, trained and provided support to the county s GALs, enabling these needy children to have a voice in their future. 4. Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies provides prenatal support to mothers who need care. Fifty-one percent of children born in Palm Beach County live in poverty. AHEPA Family Charities has provided support to this worthy nonprofit for 10 years. We encourage you to visit AHEPA 18 Apartments on Community Drive and join us in helping us serve the 98 families living in the facility when we offer programs during the Christmas, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays. AHEPA and Daughter volunteers prepare and serve special luncheons at these times. Thank you for your support. A Prayer of Resurrection for each Sunday Having seen the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the Holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless one. Your Cross do we worship, O Christ, and Your holy Resurrection do we hymn and glorify. For You are our God, we know no other but You, we call upon Your name. Come all the faithful, let us worship the holy Resurrection of Christ; for behold through the Cross, joy has come in all the world. Ever blessing the Lord, we extol His Resurrection. For enduring the Cross for us, He destroyed death by death. ~This prayer is offered by the priest before incensing the Holy Altar prior to the Great Entrance THANKS TO OUR FAITHFUL VOLUNTEERS! 16
