Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time July 8, 2012 Sacred Heart, Manchester St. John the Baptist, Essex. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: One of the goals that our parishes are constantly working towards is to be places of welcome and warmth. A parish grows by extending hospitality to friend and visitor. Regardless if one is a weekly participant, a visitor, or someone looking to reconnect with a worshipping faith community, we should all strive to extend a warm welcome and signs that we are glad that one has come. In many ways, it is my observation, that we do this well. There are greeters at the doors to welcome and pass out bulletins, worship aids, to exchange a greeting and a warm smile. We should strive to make those who arrive a little late, feel as welcomed, leaving room at the end of the rows or moving in gracefully if they approach the pew we are sitting in. Ushers and greeters should assist those who are looking for a seat or require some specific assistance. During the sign of peace, we should extend the peace of the Lord to those near us in some form, especially to those we do not know. When we see a new face, we should try to introduce ourselves and make them feel welcomed. When a new person is searching for a new place to worship, often the first impression they receive will help them decide if they wish to be a part of a parish. As I stated, I think we do these things well, but we also need to be mindful those who are praying before Mass. Recently, a few people have commented that the noise level at the rear of the churches, particularly before Mass, can be distracting as they preparation for Mass. As a brief word of reminder, I ask you that as you welcome and greet each other before Mass to be mindful that we are gathering to pray and to prepare ourselves for Liturgy. A warm welcome does not need to be loud or distracting, if you need to have an extend conversation with someone, it may be better to step outside for it. Let us work to continue to find a balance between being a welcoming community and one that respects each other s prayer time and space. Peace, Fr. Jack Faith Book Reflection on Today s Readings From today's Gospel: So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. Reflection: What "mighty deed" do we need in our lives right now? Dare we ask from our faith? What could it be?... A more lively faith? Resolution of some conflict? Better listening skills? Less anxiety about the future? etc. Do we have faith enough to ask? So we ask ourselves: Do we feel we have some very big things to do and that we are on our own? What must we do to make some room for Jesus to work a "mighty deed?" Sharing Our Gifts ~ Strengthening our Faith Thank you for your willingness to assist in the Sharing Our Gifts ~ Strengthening Our Faith Capital Campaign for Sacred Heart Parish. Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time July 8, 2012 Sacred Heart, Manchester St. John the Baptist, Essex C.A.M.P.S. C.A.M.P.S. is in an acronym for Christ As My Personal Savior, which represents the goal and purpose of the retreat. It is staffed by youth ministers, college students, adults and priests from over 40 Catholic parishes throughout the Boston area. This is the 21st annual CAMPS experience - and it's the most incredible yet. All high-school youth entering grade 9 through and including newly graduated seniors are welcome to attend. You hear lots of talk about this or that "unique" event. But CAMPS is just that. Incredible things happen at CAMPS with incredible people. At CAMPS we blend a variety of creative activities - music, games, talks, discussions, worship, concerts, campfires and tournaments into a powerful, one-week retreat adventure. C.A.M.P.S is having a Sports Raffle to help support the summer camp program for high school teens. Prizes are 6 Red Sox games, 1 each Brunins, Celtics and Patriots games. There are 2 tickets to each game. There are 9 winners in all. Tickets are $5.00 each please see or call Al Mitchell at 978-879-3655 for raffle tickets and CAMPS applications and info. Clergy Cook Out On Friday, July 13, we will welcome many priests to a summer cookout at Tucks Point. If you are able to assist anytime between 2:00 pm to about 8:00 pm, we are looking for volunteers to assist with set up, serving, and clean up. Please contact Darice at the parish office if you are able to assist even only for an hour. Clergy Cookout July 2011 Parking at St. John the Baptist When parking at St. John s please be mindful of the needs of the area businesses. There are a lot of spaces available in the Town Parking Lot, behind the Fire Station. There is a stairway that leads to the rear of the Village Restaurant,. If you park at the Village Restaurant, please leave the spaces near the doors and the front of the building available for their patrons. We are grateful for their cooperation and assistance in allowing us to use some of their spaces. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you If you look through the past few weeks of our bulletins, you will see many different social events that have taken place. The Tuck s Point Mass and Cookout could not have taken place without the help of our master grillers, Michael Matthews, Anthony Bullock and Lee Nadeau. Bud Day and his team cooked the corn to perfection while Veronica Matthews, Ann Nadeau and Scott McIntire served the chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs. Also helping were Linda Feuerbach, Janice Sullivan, Woody and Gretchen Wood. Another successful event at Tuck s Point! The next week, we celebrated Fr. Jack s 25th Ordination Anniversary Mass and Reception. Many hands helped in both parishes to create beautiful receptions for this special event. We are so blessed in both parishes to have such an active participation of our parishioners who come forward to lend their time, talents and treasures. Thank you to all of you who were there to help, we could not have done this without you. On Friday, July 13, we will be hosting a cookout for the clergy of the Archdiocese of Boston. We would love to have you join us in helping in any way you can. If you are interested in volunteering to help, please call the Parishes Office at 978-526-1263. 5
