Welcome & Introduction Welcome and thank you for joining me in a quest to seek God and get in His Word regularly! As a mom of eight kids, I struggled often over the years with being consistent in reading God's Word daily. However, I knew that it was vital to spend time in His Word and seeking His wisdom, so I learned to be creative. I recognized the fact that my quiet time wouldn't look the same for me as it did before I had children. I also realized that I could include my kids in that time when needed, rather than just neglecting it until I could be alone. In this little course I will be sharing not only WHY it's important to be in God's Word daily, but I will also be giving lots of practical ideas and options to be sure you find something that will work for you. The key is a commitment to making it a priority daily, along with intentional plan of HOW you are going to accomplish that goal. an We will be focusing on small challenges, and baby steps to take you in the right direction. You will get back on track with disciplines and habits to that lead to consistency, and by taking the suggested action steps to get you started. It takes at least 21 days to develop a habit, which is why I made this into a three week course. By committing to seeking God daily through His Word, you will soon find that it has developed into a daily habit. As you begin the course, I would suggest printing the workbook and keeping it in a binder, so everything will be all together for you. (Note: You do not need to print all the charts if you don't want to. They are included as options.) The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com Kathie Morrissey 1
At the very end of the workbook is a personal journal page. Print as many copies of that as you would like, and use it for writing your Seeking Him verses, your prayer praises, etc. You can then print more as needed. To get the most benefit, follow along in your workbook as you watch the videos. (Some of the pages have fill-in-the-blank as you listen.) 1-1 Why You Need To Be In God's Word Daily Success or failure in the Christian life, for you and for me, is dependent upon how much of God's Word we regularly get into our hearts and minds. However, it is easy to things in life take precedence over His Word, and allow the things that seem "urgent" to distract us from what really matters. When you miss a day now and then in His Word, it becomes easier and easier to replace that time with other activities that seemed pressing. As a result, you are then doing things in your own strength and wisdom, and thus struggling with discouragement. Often when struggling with discouragement, I cried out to God, only to have Him remind me that I had been neglecting His Word - the source of my strength and wisdom. In order to have a heart after God's own heart we must develop the habit of daily seeking Him. Everything else we talk about, or do, rests on the foundation of a strong relationship with the Lord. Why You Need To Be In God s Word Daily Perhaps you are wondering why it is so important to get into God's Word. Let's look at eight blessings and benefits that come from reading His Word. 1. His Word shows you how to. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105 Life is filled with decisions, but God's Word will show us the next step, guide us in our next decision, and lead us to the next thing. As you fill your mind with God's Word, it will help you manage your life God's way! His Word shows you how to LIVE. 2. His Word gives you. WISDOM is seeing things as God sees them. As we read His Word and get it into our hearts and minds, it helps us gain the wisdom that we need daily as busy moms. I'm glad that we don't have to figure it all out on our own, but can easily find wisdom in His Word. 3. His Word also gives you. Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. Psalm 119:165 There are many things that can cause us to live in fear, or be consumed with worry. The secret is to replace those thoughts and fears with God's truth. PEACE will flood your heart as you let God's Word fill your minds with His promises, and His truths. The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com 5 Kathie Morrissey
4. His Word brings you. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Psalm 1:2,3 Joshua 1:8 also tells us that when we meditate on His Word, our way will be prosperous, and we'll have success. Together, these verses tell us that when we delight in, and mediate on, God's Word we're going to get God's BLESSINGS and He's going to prosper us in what we do. 5. His Word also brings you. Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart. Jeremiah 15:16 It's easy to let the difficulties and stresses of life, steal your JOY. Staying in God's Word will restore the joy you may have lost. 6. His Word gives you confidence in. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. John 15:7 I just LOVE this promise! If I will spend time drawing close to God, and letting His Word abide in my heart and mind, I can ask for things in PRAYER and He will do it. The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com 6 Kathie Morrissey
7. His Word guides you as you make. I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. Psalm 32:8 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105 Do you sometimes struggle with choosing the right thing to do? When we know the principles of God's Word, they guide us and light our way in decision making so that we can make the best CHOICES. 8. His Word keeps you from. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Psalm 119:11 These are eight blessings of staying in God's Word. The main thing you can do to intentionally keep your heart right with God, is seek Him. I love them that love me: and those that seek me early shall find me. Proverbs 8:17 ACTION STEPS Choose one of these steps to begin seeking Him intentionally every day. Decide which one you can consistently add to your daily schedule: 1. Using the provided SEEK HIM LIST, read and write one verse daily. -OR- 2. Using the provided PSALM 119 CHART, begin to read one section (8 verses) of Psalm 119 a day, and fill in the blanks on the chart. Going through this Psalm and chart will show you the value of loving and obeying God's Word. The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com Kathie Morrissey 7
1-2 Seven Disciplines for the Heart We are going to be looking at seven disciplines, or habits, that we want to develop as we focus on the heart and our relationship with God. As we go through these, I don't want you to feel overwhelmed, wondering how you are going to fit all these things into your already busy schedule. Realize these are things that you want to start developing into habits, but start small, and do what you can. The goal is to intentionally do one or two at a time, then add more, until they have all become habits. Keep in mind that each section of this course is 21 days long, because it takes 21 days to develop a habit. So realistically, it will probably take more than 21 days to develop them all into habits, and THAT'S OKAY! We're not in a race, and you don't want to set yourself up for failure by trying to do more than is realistic. Work through these at your own pace. Discipline 1: Make your time with God early in the day. Read these verses and fill in the missing words: Proverbs 8:17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me shall find me. Psalm 63:1 O God, thou art my God; will I seek thee. Psalm 5:3 My voice shalt thou hear in the Oh Lord; in the will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com 8 Kathie Morrissey
Mark 1:35 And in the, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. Notice the common themes: Early and Morning. Maybe you are like me, and you are NOT a morning person! I had 8 kids who kept me up at night. I have also struggled with insomnia for many, many years and still do. Getting up EARLY has always been hard for me. But, can I just tell you that it is WORTH IT?! Getting up early (or earlier than the others do) will give you a slight head start on your day. Even more important is the fact that when you give God the first part of your day, He blesses the time that remains. The busier you are, the more vital it is to make time to seek God through His Word and prayer. I love the following poem, and keep it in my Bible as a reminder to seek God each morning: The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com Kathie Morrissey 9
I Got Up Early One Morning I got up early one morning And rushed right into the day; I had so much to accomplish That I didn't have time to pray. Problems just tumbled around me, And heavier came each task; Why doesn't God help me? I wondered. He answered, You didn't ask. I wanted to see joy and beauty, But the day toiled on gray and bleak; I wondered why God didn t show me. He said, But you didn t seek. I tried to come into God s presence; I used all my keys in the lock. God gently and lovingly chided, My Child, you didn't knock. I woke up early this morning, And paused before entering the day; I had so much to accomplish That I had to take time to pray. ~Author Anonymous~ The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com Kathie Morrissey 10
Discipline 2: Make Bible reading the first thing you do. I don't know about you, but it is so easy to just grab my phone as soon as I wake up, and start scrolling through my Facebook feed, or checking my email. It's just as easy to grab your Bible first, and start reading that. Fill your heart and mind with His truths, before anything else. Perhaps you struggle with this because your kids are always up right when you are, and they are needy of your time and attention. Teach them to honor your special time with the Lord; then keep it short. Train them to play quietly or stay in their rooms for that short time. Another option would be to let them sit beside you and look at a Bible story book, or read a kids' devotional. This is a great way to show them this is a daily priority for you, while also helping THEM to develop that habit. If you must be out of the house early, and you just won't have time, use an app on your phone and LISTEN to God's Word as you are fixing your hair, and putting on your make-up. Be creative, and find what works for you and your situation. Your walk with God should be your first daily priority. That way, if nothing else gets done that day, you will have done what God says is most important. The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com Kathie Morrissey 11
Discipline 3: Make a commitment NOT to miss a day! God's Word is too important to skip, and when we start missing a day of reading it here and there, it gets easier and easier to skip. In the meantime you are losing the source of strength and wisdom that you need for each day. You become like Martha busy, bothered and worried, rather than choosing what is the better thing, by spending time sitting at the feet of Jesus. A Pastor once told how he asked this question at hundreds of churches: How many of you read the Bible daily, without fail?" To his surprise out of all the churches that he went to across the county, he found that VERY FEW people read their Bible every day without fail. Maybe you're busy and skip a day now and then -- do you do that with your stomach? Do you go an entire day being so busy that you forget or can't take time to eat? No - we usually put our stomachs before our Bibles. I love this verse, as it shows the value we should place on reading God's Word: "I have esteemed the words of His mouth, more than my necessary food" Job 23:12. Below is a good motto to help you be faithful to your Bible reading: "No Bible, no breakfast." The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com 12 Kathie Morrissey
Discipline 4: Write it. I don't know about you, but often I find it hard to slow my mind down enough to really think about what I'm reading in God's Word. I read through it, only to realize that my mind was elsewhere. We certainly don't want to just read the Bible daily as a duty, so we can cross it off our to-do list. We want to glean from it and hear from God. I have found that the simple discipline of writing Scripture causes me to slow down and think about what I'm reading. It also helps me to remember it more, so I can think about it throughout the day. (If you want to start with this discipline, use the provided SEEK HIM chart for 30 days of writing a verse about seeking God.) Discipline 5: Ask God to give you an open heart as you read His Word. "Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. Psalm 119:18 Read with the expectation that God will speak to your heart. Also read with a heart that is willing to obey as He speaks to you. Discipline 6: Prepare to hear from God. As you approach your quiet time with a heart of expectation, be prepared. Have a journal or paper, a pen, post-it notes or notecards, and maybe a highlighter. If you use your phone or IPad make sure they are charged and ready. The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com 13 Kathie Morrissey
Discipline 7: Have a plan (when, where, what, how). When you fail to plan, things often don't get done. With a plan, you will approach your time with God intentionally, with a purpose. That keeps you from wasting time having to make decisions (such as: Should I do it now or after breakfast? Should I read from Psalms or the New Testament?) WHEN: We've already talked about making it early and first. The best thing to do is to attach it to something that you already do regularly, like waking up, fixing your hair, or eating breakfast. That way you aren't adding something else to remember to do daily to your list, but are putting it with something you already do, making it much more likely that you will remember and stick with it. WHERE: If possible, it's good to have a place where you go to meet with God. Choose a place where you won't be distracted, a place where you can focus. WHAT: What are you going to read? A chapter a day, what book, etc. (I will go into several ideas and options for this in the next lesson.) HOW: Are you going to listen on your phone or IPad, or will you read from your Bible? If you listen, will you write it later? The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com 14 Kathie Morrissey
ACTION STEPS 1. Go through the list of 7 Disciplines for the Heart, and check which ones you already do regularly. 1. Make your time with God early in the day. 2. Make Bible reading the first thing you do. 3. Make a commitment not to miss a day. 4. Write it. 5. Ask God to give you an open heart as you read. 6. Prepare to hear from God. 7. Have a plan (when, where, what, how) 2. List the ones that you need to work on, and then ask God to help you begin to develop those disciplines: 3. Print the 7 Disciplines printable book marker and put it with your Bible as a daily reminder. The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com 15 Kathie Morrissey
1-3 A Plan For Your Time With God We are going to look at a four part plan for your time with God, as well as give you a variety of ways to get started. Let s first look at an overview of the four parts that should be included in your time with God. We will then go into more detail about each of them. Four Part Plan For Your Time With God: 1. Read His Word 2. Write it 3. Praise Him 4. Pray about how to apply what you have read Keep in mind that you don't have to make this into a long drawn out process. Make it work for your schedule in the season of life you are in now. That may mean you are only able to spend a few minutes each day going through these four parts. If you're in a less busy stage of life, you may be able to spend 15-30 minutes, or more, going through them. The important thing is establishing a daily habit of spending time with God and His Word, not how long you spend each day going through the process. Also, you want to be sure you are hearing from God versus just going through the steps. Make it personal, and make it fit your needs. Now let's look at each step in more detail, and consider some different ideas and choices. The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com Kathie Morrissey 16
Part 1: READ HIS WORD using a plan of your choice. ANY method that works for YOU is fine. The key is CHOOSING a plan so that you will have something to guide you and keep you focused. Reading Plans If you are concerned about having enough time, consider one of these shorter reading plans: A Psalm a Day A Proverbs a Day A Psalm plus a Proverbs a Day Study Plans If you are able to spend more time reading His Word daily, consider choosing from one of the following, more in-depth plans, which are a little more like Bible study, but not too time consuming. (NOTE: There are charts for all but the first of these provided with your workbook.) Read through the Bible: From beginning to end (1-3 chapters a day) Comparison Study from Proverbs: Foolish person versus wise person This study explores what a foolish person does or is known for, and the results of foolishness. Then you do the same for a wise person. Contrasts in Proverbs: Some ideas you can use with this chart: Humility and pride Diligence and laziness Obedience and disobedience Upright (just, righteous, good) and wicked (unrighteous, evil) The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com Kathie Morrissey 17
Spiritual Diary: As you read through a passage/chapter, look for the following: A promise to claim A command to obey A timeless principle A verse that stood out to you A way the message applies to your life Results of Meditating on Scripture List the reference and the result. Example: Joshua 1:8 Results: You will prosper and be successful Part 2: Write It. I don't think I need to say much about this as I have mentioned it previously. As stated, writing a verse causes you to slow down and think about it, and also helps you to remember what you have read. For example, while you are doing one of the studies mentioned above, you could write one of the verses that really speaks to your heart. The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com Kathie Morrissey 18
Part 3: Praise Him. Work your way through the information given about this step of your plan, and you will see why I included it as an essential part of your daily quiet time. 1. WHY praise is important God made us to praise Him. Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth; everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. Isaiah 43:6-7 God commands it. "Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord." Psalm 150:6 2. WHEN to praise the Lord Look up the verses below. Complete the phrase about praising the Lord: Psalm 71:8 -...all the Psalm 34:1 -...at Psalm 119:164 -... a day Psalm 55:17 -... and at noon Psalm 40:16 -...say Basically we should praise the Lord ALL the time. The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com Kathie Morrissey 19
3. HOW to praise the Lord A. Read a verse or two about praise (See lists below) B. Sing a song or hymn of praise. Look up the verses below. Write the phrase about singing to the Lord: Psalm 27:6 - Psalm 28:7 - Psalm 30:4 - Psalm 18:49 - Psalm 21:13 - Ephesians 5:19 - Psalm 149:5 - Psalm 105:2 - Psalm 59:16 - Sometimes I struggled with this because it was hard to find time alone in the morning before little ones were up and about. Often all I could do was read a verse or two. I found a simple solution for that! I began to have a praise time WITH THE KIDS! We would sing songs together that praised Him. They were often kids' songs, but they still spoke to my heart. We sang little songs like: My God is so big, so strong and so mighty I will sing of the mercies of the Lord Isn't He wonderful I loved this! It helped me (and the kids!) start our day with a heart of praise. The Character Corner www.thecharactercorner.com Kathie Morrissey 20
Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable Here are some passages to help you get started with praying VERSES OF PRAISE Micah 7:18 Psalm 145:5 Psalm 145:6 Psalm 145:7 Psalm 145:9 Psalm 139:4 Psalm 86:15 Psalm 104:1 Psalm 103:1-5 Psalm 86:8-10 Psalm 103:8-11 Psalm 86:12-13 The Character Corner Kathie Morrissey 21
Part 4: Pray. Part of your quiet time should include time for prayer. Ask God to show you how to apply what He has revealed in His Word. Ask Him for wisdom. Commit your day to Him. (Proverbs 16:3) Prayer is the key to our power to do what we ought to do, and to live intentionally. Without it, we are merely struggling in our own strength. A more thorough focus on prayer will be provided later in the course, with a section/module dedicated to this essential practice. In review, here are the four parts to include in your daily quiet time: 1. Read your Bible (or listen to it) 2. Write (verses or study components) 3. Praise Him (read verses of praise out loud, sing hymns of praise, pray verses of praise back to Him) 4. Pray about how to apply what you have learned from His Word. ACTION STEPS 1. Choose which reading plan or study plan you are going to begin. Print journal pages or have paper ready to use. 2. Look at the provided list of HYMNS OF PRAISE, and add some of your favorites to the list for future use in your quiet time. 3. Keep the provided list of PRAISE VERSES, and add to it as you find praise verses in your daily reading. 4. Start using the provided DAILY HEART MANAGEMENT checklist to keep yourself on track.
