INTRODUCTORY RITES STAND All make the sign of cross as the celebrant intones the introductory verse. All bow at the Glory be Celebrant: Celebrant: O God, come to our aid. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia. HYMN: O Come, Divine Messiah

PSALM 140 (141) SIT Prayer in time of danger The smoke of incense rose before God with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel (Rev 8:4). Antiphon 1: Proclaim it, say to the peoples: Behold, God will come and save us. I have called to you, Lord; hasten to help me! Hear my voice when I cry to you. Let my prayer arise before you like incense, the raising of my hands like an evening oblation. Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth; keep watch, O Lord, at the door of my lips! Do not turn my heart to things that are wrong, to evil deeds with men who are sinners. Never allow me to share in their feasting If a just man strikes or reproves me it is kindness; But let the oil of the wicked not anoint my head. Let my prayer be ever against their malice. Their princes were thrown down by the side of the rock; then they understood that my words were kind. As a millstone is shattered to pieces on the ground, so their bones were strewn at the mouth of the grave.

To you, Lord God, my eyes are turned: in you I take refuge; spare my soul! From the trap they have laid for me keep me safe: keep me from the snares of those who do evil. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Altogether: Antiphon 1: Proclaim it, say to the peoples: Behold, God will come and save us.

PSALM 141 (142) God, the foundation of Jerusalem All these things were fulfilled by the Lord at the time of his passion. (St. Hilary) Antiphon 2: Behold, the Lord will come, and all his holy ones with him. On that day a great light will appear. Alleluia. With all my voice I cry to the Lord, with all my voice I entreat the Lord. I pour out my trouble before him; I tell him all my distress while my spirit faints within me. But you, O Lord, know my path. On the way where I shall walk they have hidden a snare to entrap me. Look on my right and see: there is no one who takes my part. I have no means of escape; not one who cares for my soul. I cry to you, O Lord. I have said: You are my refuge all I have in the land of the living. Listen, then, to my cry for I am in the depths of distress.

Rescue me from those who pursue me for they are stronger than I. Bring my soul out of this prison and then I shall praise your name. Around me the just will assemble because of your goodness to me. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Altogether: Antiphon 2: Behold, the Lord will come, and all his holy ones with him. On that day a great light will appear. Alleluia.

CANTICLE Christ, God s servant (Philippians 2) Antiphon 3: The Lord will come with great might and all flesh will see him. Though he was in the form of God, Jesus did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped. He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name. That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Altogether: Antiphon 3: The Lord will come with great might and all flesh will see him.

SCRIPTURE READING 1 THESSALONIANS 5:23-24 May the God of peace make you perfect and holy; and may you all be kept safe and blameless, spirit, soul and body, for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. God has called you and he will not fail you. Silent reflection SHORT RESPONSORY Schola leads and the Assembly responds. Intercession Response Show us, Lord, your steadfast love. R: Show us, Lord, your steadfast love. And grant us your salvation. R: Show us, Lord, your steadfast love. Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. R: Show us, Lord, your steadfast love.

CANTICLE MAGNIFICAT STAND The thurifer goes to the chair and bows to the celebrant, who then prepares incense. The Celebrant goes before the altar and bows. The antiphon to the Magnificat is intoned by the cantor. The Celebrant bows and the Magnificat is intoned. The thurifer passes the thurible to the Celebrant after he makes the Sign of the Cross and the Altar and Eucharist are incensed. All make the Sign of the Cross at the beginning of the Magnificat. The Celebrant returns to the Chair and is incensed by the thurifer. The thurifer then incenses the congregation. My soul rejoices in the Lord Magnificat: There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony; and then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour. He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly.

He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Altogether: Magnificat: There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony; and then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

INTERCESSIONS Celebrant: Before time began, the Word was with the Father; in the fulness of time he came to us through the Virgin Mary. R: Come today through the Church, Lord Jesus. Cantor: All that came to be was alive with his life: may our lives be a light for men. R. The Word dwells with God: may we dwell with him in the Father s love. R. The Word entered his own realm, and his own would not receive him. By responding to those who demand our care, may we welcome him into our hearts.. R. The Word came among us, full of grace and truth; may all the dead be counted as children of God. R.

OUR FATHER Celebrant: CONCLUDING PRAYER Celebrant: Grant, almighty Father, that when Christ comes again we may go out to meet him bearing the harvest of good workds achieved by your grace. We pray that he will receive us into the company of the saints and call us into the kingdom of heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. R. Amen.

EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT & ADORATION KNEEL SILENT PRAYER

BENEDICTION KNEEL Down In Adoration Down in adoration falling This great Sacrament we hail, Ancient types have long departed; Newer rites of grace prevail Faith for all defects supplying Where the feeble senses fail Glory let us give and blessing, To the Father and the Son Honour, might and praise addressing While eternal ages run Equal praise to Him confessing Who proceeds from both as one. Amen. Celebrant: Celebrant: You have given them bread from heaven. Having itself all delight. Let us pray, O God, who in this wonderful Sacrament, left us a memorial of your passion. Grant, we implore you that we may so venerate the sacred mysteries of your Body and Blood. As always to be conscious of the fruit of your redemption. You who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. The Celebrant blesses all present with the Blessed Sacrament.

The Divine Praises Blessed be God Blessed be his holy name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man. Blessed be the Name of Jesus. Blessed be His Most Sacred Heart. Blessed be His Most Precious Blood. Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy. Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception. Blessed be her glorious Assumption. Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother. Blessed be Saint Joseph, her most chaste spouse. Blessed be God in His angels and in His Saints. The Blessed Sacrament is then brought to repose. As this is done, the schola alternates the Laudate Dominum with the Assembly.

Ave Verum Corpus Ave, ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine, vere passum immolatum in cruce pro homine. Hail, hail true body born of the Virgin Mary, who truly suffered, sacrificed on the Cross for man. Cuius latus perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine, esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine, in mortis examine. Whose pierced side overflowed with water and blood, be for us a foretaste (of the heavenly banquet) in the trial of death, in the trial of death.

BLESSING OF THE ADVENT WREATH 1509 The use of the Advent Wreath is a traditional practice, which has found its place in the Church as well as in the home. The blessing of an Advent Wreath takes place on the First Sunday of Advent or on the evening before the First Sunday of Advent. The blessing may be celebrated during Mass, a celebration of the word of God, or Evening Prayer. 1512 If the Advent Wreath is to be used in church, it should be of sufficient size to be visible to the congregation. It may be suspended from the ceiling or placed on a stand. If it is placed in the presbyterium, it should not interfere with the celebration of the liturgy, nor should it obscure the altar, lectern, or chair. 1513 When the Advent Wreath is used in church, on the Second and succeeding Sundays of Advents the candles are lighted wither before Mass begins or immediately before the opening prayer; no additional rites or prayers are used. 1516 The Advent Wreath may be blessed by a priest, deacon, or a lay minister. PRAYER OF BLESSING 1519 With hands outstretched, the celebrant says the prayer of blessing: Celebrant: Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, he is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ s promise to bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R. Amen. The first candle of the Advent Wreath is then lighted.
