Bethany III 19 June 2016 Happy Father s Day! MICA (P) No.: 030/10/2012 MEDITATION Rev Dr Charles Tan Text: Psalm 18 INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Meditation 1 Announcements 4 Worship 8 Poetry Corner 9 Bible Memory Work 10 This Week @ Worship 11 I WILL LOVE YOU, O LORD WONDERFUL EXPERIENCES OF GOD Psalm 18 is a wonderfully uplifting Psalm to read. In this Psalm the Psalmist David recorded the wonderful experiences he had of the Lord. The following may be highlighted. page 1 (continued on page 2)

MEDITATION (Continued from page 1) 1. God hears prayers a) David found himself in dire straits (Psalm 18:4-5) b) He called upon the Lord in his distress c) He remembered how the Lord heard his prayer In my distress I called upon the LORD, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple And my cry came before Him, even to His ears. Psalm 18:6 2. God delivers His own a) David beautifully recorded how God answered him b) In beautiful Hebrew poetic language, he described how God came to rescue him Psalm 18:7-19 c) This text is an excerpt of how God delivered him He sent from above, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me, For they were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity, (Continued on page 3) page 2

MEDITATION (Continued from page 2) But the LORD was my support, He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me. David was deeply grateful for the Lord s lovingkindness Psalm 18:16-19 APPROPRIATE RESPONSE What would be an appropriate response? David s words are worth reading and emulating. I will love You, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer. My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies. Psalm 18:1-3 We have an appropriate threefold response here! 1. A declaration of love for the Lord 2. A declaration of faith in God 3. A declaration of determination to call upon the Lord Let us be challenged to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the Lord in our life! DO YOU NOT FEAR ME? Do you not fear Me? This was a question raised by God, There seems a lack of understanding, a lack of regard for the Lord! Every bit of knowledge of God should cause us to stand in awe, His power and his majesty should cause the heart to adore! The Lord was the One who pronounced a powerful divine decree. Even though three quarters of the earth may be covered by the sea, The sea cannot engulf the earth no matter how hard it may try, God s power and sovereignty should bring a tear to the eye! The danger lies in the problem of possessing a foolish heart, The lack of wisdom and faith will tear our confidence apart. The foolish heart thinks nothing of departing from the Lord, This path leads to destruction and it separates us from God! The heart must learn to fear the One who is the Creator-God, It will then find peace and comfort in a world full of discord. How blessed we would be of we learn how to have reverence! We will find grace and favour from His loving countenance. Charles Tan POETRY CORNER page 9

PASTORAL LETTER Dear Brethren, HAPPY FATHER S DAY! 19 June 2016 Thank God for all good fathers who show deep love and commitment to their children. The story of Jairus and his love for his daughter was so moving that the synoptic gospel writers wrote about it (Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:22-43; Luke 8:41-55). I have written a poem to encourage all fathers to cultivate a greater faith in God. ONLY BELIEVE Senior Pastor : Rev Dr Charles Tan Mailing Address : 301, Upper Paya Lebar Road. Singapore 534934 Tel : (65) 62877713 Fax : (65) 62877980 Website : www.bethanyipc.sg Who knows what anguish must have filled the heart, When death threatens to pull the family apart? Everything had been tried but nothing had prevailed, It seems as if death had won, and naught avails. But a father s heart is one that is full of deep, deep love, He will not rest till he has sought help from heaven above. Jesus was nearby and Jairus heart was greatly stirred, Would his friends understand if he sought His help. He feared! A true father s heart would not be bound by what people may say, He must seek Jesus and humbly bow his knee to Him without delay. His daughter s life was in grave danger and every moment counts, He rushed to seek Jesus, all his fears he managed to surmount. Jesus proved to be kind and gracious and He walked to his house, Jairus walked beside Him, his heart anxious, and he was quiet as a mouse. His friends came to him with news that nearly broke his heart, It was too late! His daughter was dead! His heart was torn apart! Many fears gripped Jairus as he looked up to Jesus the Lord, The Master was not perturbed, for He possessed the power of God! Only believe! The Lord Jesus spoke to him and his heart became calm, The words of the Lord Jesus, they acted like a wonderful balm. Jesus drew near to the bed on which the little daughter of Jairus lay, Everyone had been asked to leave the room; they had spread dismay. Lovingly He held her hand, and spoke gently, and the little girl arose, Jairus learned a lesson that day. Faith must prevail and unbelief opposed! Inspiration: Mark 5:22-43 Prayerfully, Pastor Charlie God s kind of Church where God is touching lives and people care for people
