THOUGHTS FROM OUR SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR Msgr. Edward House THE HOLY SPIRIT IN OUR LIVES On Sunday, May 24, the Church celebrated the Solemnity of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the Church. Historians suggest that the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Church and the Apostles is the birthday of the Church. If this is true, then we need to give a big thank you to the Holy Spirit who has guided the Church over 2000 years. I came across the following article on the Holy Spirit which I would like to share with you. HOLY SPIRIT IS BREATH OF GOD: On September 11, 1961, Hurricane Carla made landfall at Port O Connor, Texas. It was the most intense hurricane ever to hit the United States. Winds reached speeds of 175 mph. Some say it sounded like a freight train passing through their living rooms. On the day of Pentecost, 50 days after Jesus rose from the dead, just 10 days after his Ascension into Heaven, his disciples heard the same sound the sound of a violent wind the sound of a freight train passing through their homes. And with that sound came the Holy Spirit. You see, in the language of the Bible, wind and spirit are the same word. The Holy Spirit is holy wind, the very breath of God. You can t see the wind. The only thing you can see is what it moves: leaves blowing, snow drifting, waves crashing on the shore. You can feel the wind on your face. So it is with the Holy Spirit, you can t see the Holy Spirit working. You can see the results though. You can see people joyfully worshiping and serving God. You can see the tears dry on your friend s face as they are comforted by God s promise. You can see the joy of the Spirit and the peace He gives. You can feel it yourself. The Holy Spirit is like wind. The problem is many Christians want and expect hurricane force winds. They want to feel the overwhelming emotions of the Holy Spirit at times elicits as we hear his Word and promises proclaimed to us. Yes, sometimes you will feel a hurricane of emotions as the Holy Spirit drives you to tears of sorrow over your sins and tears of joy over his forgiveness. Sometimes you will feel God s overwhelming presence fill your hearts as you sing out your praises to him. Usually, however, the Holy Spirit does not work with hurricane force. Usually, he speaks to us in the gentle whisper of His Word. Like a gentle fan slowly turning in your house, you may not even feel the breeze as the Holy Spirit quietly works faith and peace and confidence in your heart. As you sit in Church hearing his Word proclaimed, as you receive Jesus Body and Blood in Holy Communion, as you spend quiet time reading your Bible at home, the Holy Spirit is stoking the flame of faith in your heart. We often don t even notice the Spirit working through His Word and Sacraments. Don t despise the gentle whisper of the Gospel. Don t think that the Holy Spirit only works when you feel overwhelming emotions in worship and prayer. The Holy Spirit can and does at times work with hurricane force, but he also quietly works in the gentle whisper of a Sunday homily or a simple family devotion. His great power is behind that gentle breeze. ELECTION MEETING TUESDAY, JUNE 2 ~ 2 ~

GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE: In my last message, I told you how proud I was to accept on your behalf the seven awards which the Ontario State Board bestowed on our Council. This could only be accomplished with your involvement and participation. What I didn t know was that there was one more award that our Council was honoured with: Best Council Award Division #6 First Place I humbly accepted this award from District Deputy Milt Cowan on your behalf at our last meeting. During the month of May, we had a very successful collection on Rose for Life Sunday and our Victoria Weekend Bottle Drive. Our generous parishioners donated a total of $859.50 for the Roses for Life and we collected $117.50 for the Special Olympics Bottle Drive. Thank you Holy Rosary Parish and you the members who made this possible. The meeting included a presentation to our Chaplain Monsignor House honouring him for achieving 40 years in the priesthood congratulations Monsignor. Following that our Grand Knight Don Prescott proceeded to demonstrate to us how successful our first year has been. At the annual State Convention, Don made seven trips to the front of the room and received six awards for our council along with one of the BBFT (Basketball Free Throw) trophies for an 11 year old boy living in Aldershot who finished first in his division. District Deputy Milt Cowan then presented our council with the Best Council Award for our Division. Needless to say we are all very proud of our Council ~ 5 ~

Our Council was honoured with six awards at the state convention in Toronto in April. On the left Grand Knight SK Don Prescott proudly informs the council while SK Vic Lefebvre, Monsignor House and District Deputy Milt Cowan look on. Our Council received an outstanding number of awards at the State convention including Membership Quota Best Church project Best Community Project Best Family project and the Jack Clancey Special Olympics Award. BEST COUNCIL AWARD for 2014-2015 The best of all awards received by our council was the Best Council Award (div #6). Pictured above Grand Knight Don Prescott and Chaplain Monsignor House receive the plaque from District Deputy Milt Cowan Special thanks goes to our Financial Secretary SK Vic Lefebvre for taking the time to compile all of the documentation required to submit our projects to State in order to have them evaluated. Nothing happens automatically and so Vic s efforts were a big factor in our success. On behalf of our council members I wish to also thank our Grand Knight Don Prescott for his tireless leadership without which this could not have happened. ~ 6 ~

Knights in Action May 2015 7 th Aldershot Scouts On May 8 h some of our knights volunteered to help out at the 7 th Aldershot scout group annual Pasta Dinner and Silent Auction held at East Plains United church. The event was a great success thanks partly to the help from the knights. Brothers Sam Cervoni, David Lord, Aeneas MacIsaac, Danny Morrison, Ken Fleming and Brother and Scout leader Blair Breckenridge. Sam and his kitchen helpers are gaining a reputation around Burlington for their special way of preparing spaghetti, meatballs and sauce. The knights also helped out with the silent auction. Brothers Blair, Danny and Ken helped to display and control the auction table. Grand Knight Don Prescott was there with his wife Nancy to make sure we behaved Special Olympics Bottle Drive On May 19 th we kicked off our 2015 Special Olympics Bottle Drive. We collected several hundred bottles and around $100 in just 2 hours. Brothers Don Prescott, David Lord, Joe Milton and Ken Fleming pitched in to collect the bottles and return them to the beer store. We hope to do the same after each long weekend in 2015 with the goal of exceeding our collection of $433 last year. Roses for Life Members of our council handed out Roses for Life after all of the masses on May 9 th and 10 th. ~ 7 ~
