Sermon Title: Me Too? Face the Giants, Stare the Monster Down, Tackle the Tough Issues. We are two Sunday s away from electing a new lead pastor. That nominated person is female, and there is a passage of scripture that would seem to imply that it is not a biblical activity to have a woman to have leadership over men. So let us face the giant, stare the monster down and tackle the tough issues that this process has stirred up. Let us also address sexual harassment and sexual abuse. The revelations of the Weinstein monster have tipped the scales for a social media phenomenon. The ME-TOO movement is disturbing, to realize the sheer numbers of people who have been sexually harassed and abused. I am not speaking to you as a 16 or 17-year-old pagan living in 1971 or 72, but as a 62-yearold pastor. Any sin, any short coming, is not solved by judging others. Over the years of ministry, I see that the things a person judges, is the very thing the same person, will be severely tempted to also do. So, I say, up front. Except by the grace of God, there go I. I am not casting stones, but as a representative of God s kingdom, and a leader in the church, it is important that I share about the treatment of women in the church. Before we read today, I want to credit a few people and resources. 2016 Read Through the Bible by Nikki and Pippa Gumbel. Their devotion also credits Lancelot Andrewes (1555 1626), one of the great theologians and preachers of his day. Commentary by Guthrie, D. (1990). Pastoral Epistles: An Introduction and Commentary (Vol. 14, pp. 90 91). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press. We are about to read a passage of scripture, that at first glance seems to imply that having a woman be elected to serve as a lead pastor would be against the bible. One of our core values is Scriptural Authority The Bible is God s truth and power revealed to us through His inspired words as the final authority for our lives. 1

Therefore, after consulting many commentaries, I present this opportunity to face this giant, to stare the monster down, and to tackle a very tough issue. May we all elevate our love and esteem of women with a solid theological foundation, so that in our church, no woman, no girl, will ever experience sexual harassment, or sexual abuse, but rather respect and honor. In addition, one day, we hope there will be a social media phenomenon that says, as a woman, I was honored and respected in church. And people will say, Me Too! Ready to tackle a tough issue? Let us Read: I Timothy 2: 1I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. 7And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle I am telling the truth, I am not lying and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles. 8Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. 9I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. 11A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man: she must be quiet. 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15But women will be saved through childbearing if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. A few things before we tackle the issue of women holding a lead pastor position. Prayer Prayer is the most important activity of your life. It is the main way in which you develop a relationship with our Father in heaven. If you love someone, naturally you will want to spend time in their presence communicating with them. Like any relationship, communication can take many different forms. Lancelot Andrewes (1555 1626), one of the great theologians and preachers of his day, wrote two lists in his Private Devotions: First, he wrote a list of times of prayer in the Bible: 2

Always... Without ceasing... At all times... Three times a day... Evening, and morning, and at noon... Seven times a day... In the morning, a great while before day... At daybreak... The third hour of the day... About the sixth hour... The hour of prayer, the ninth... The evening... By night... At midnight... Next, he wrote a list of places of prayer in the Bible: In the assembly... and in the congregation... Your closet... An upper room... A housetop... The temple... On the shore... A garden... On their beds... A desert place... In every place... I hope you have already concluded that there is no limit to the times, places and different ways in which you can pray. Prioritize Paul writes, The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know (v.1, MSG). Do you ever complain about the government or our politicians? If you want good government you must pray for it. Paul prioritizes prayer for kings and for those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness (v.2). We live in a country with a relatively stable government, and we should thank God and pray for continued stability. In much of the world people, suffer due to unstable governments and tyranny. The rule of law was a high priority in the prayers of the apostle Paul. When there is good and peaceful government it can make it easier to spread the gospel and for as many people as possible to hear the message. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth (vv.3 4). God loves every human being. No one is destined by God to be lost. He wants everyone to be saved. 3

Jesus died for us all. He gave himself as a ransom for all (v.6). This is a beautiful summary of the work of Jesus. Through his mediation and the ransom he paid, it is possible for everyone to experience an intimate relationship with the Father. Pray for everyone you know (v.1, MSG). This will include your family, friends, neighbors and anyone for whom the Holy Spirit is prompting you to pray. It is interesting to note in passing that there was an expectation that people would lift up their hands in prayer. Not shaking angry fists at enemies but raising holy hands to God (v.8, MSG). To pray with raised hands was the common practice in the ancient world. It was taken for granted that Christians, like Jews, would lift up their hands in prayer (v.8). This was the traditional form of prayer. Nicky Gumbles said, I often jest that if you go into a church and see everyone with their hands in the air say, This is a traditional church practicing ancient forms of worship. If they all have their hands down by their sides that is fine also. Just say, This is a modern, trendy church experimenting with new forms of worship! So, before we tackle the tough issue of women in leadership, can we acknowledge that even when the bible is very clear about the times to pray, and the places to pray, and the priority of prayer, that we tend to pick and choose which things of the bible we want to say we are an expert on. If a person loses their humility in reading the bible, and assumes one is an expert in the bible and a fully obedient follower of the bible, and can then assume a position as judge and jury towards others, then it becomes the sin of Satan. Conceit is and was the sin of Satan as described in 1 Timothy 3: 1Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. And verse 6 states that person must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. To believe the old lie that a person can ignore the decrees of God and become a God in themselves, and as a new friend, told me this week, become a person who walks on water. Hear me congregation. I have two more sermons before the election. The more I learn about the bible or any subject, the more humbling it is. The sin of Satan was to be lifted up in pride, and to elevate one s position from created angel to the creator God. Jesus prayer for unity in his church is hindered by this proliferation of bible experts, and if you disagree with their expertise, you are judged and called a false teacher. God s primary purpose is bringing glory to His name. It is our purpose to give all glory we receive to God. 4

God s secondary purpose is his care and concern about the happiness, holiness, and spiritual maturity of his followers. Our secondary purpose is to receive the promises of care and concern about the happiness, holiness and spiritual maturity. We can flip those concerns very easily. We can come to church with God s secondary purposes of caring and concerns about one s happiness, holiness, and spiritual maturity taking precedence of God s primary purpose of bringing glory to His name. It is fairly easy to flip these primary and secondary concerns. Let us not be so quick to judge our brothers and sisters who for a season of their life get them flipped. Some, who come from a very different theological background, in particular an author found on bible.org a Robert L. (Bob)Deffinbaugh, say in his article the Goodness of God that we must conclude that teachers who tell us God wants only to bless us with healing and prosperity in this life are, in truth, false teachers. I think his point is the God wants only to bless us part. But what many hear is that any teacher who teaches God s secondary purpose is to want to bless us with healing and prosperity in his life are in truth false teachers. I choose to and chose to be educated by the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, and NOT Theological Seminaries that refer to me as a false teacher for teaching that God wants as a secondary purpose to bless his people. God does want to bless us, but it is his secondary purpose. In times of sickness, and poverty, it is easy to drift away and get them flipped, but it doesn t make a person a false Christian, or a teacher a false teacher to offer hope to a cancer patient, nor hope to a person struggling to pay their rent. We may never be accepted by mainstream Christianity, and that really bothers me. NOT! Those same people, trained under that same theology stand in opposition to a woman being in a place of leadership in a church. In short, our relationship with God, through Christ Jesus has a primary and secondary purpose. The primary is to give glory to God in all things, at all times, in any situation, no matter what. The secondary is to believe and receive his promises for our care, our concerns, our holiness and our spiritual maturity. Let us face the giant of differences of theology on the Policy of Women in Leadership. Policy of Women in Leadership 5

There is a difficult section to expound at the end of today s passage (vv.9 15). Many of the interpretations of this passage do not really fit with the rest of the New Testament where it is clear that women had roles of leadership within the church. Paul speaks of women as apostles and deacons (Romans 16). Women are Apostles and Deacons Romans 16: 1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon Romans 16:7 Greet Junia outstanding among the apostles, Women are to be Praying and Prophesying in the Assembly 1 Corinthians 11: 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies He expects them to be praying and prophesying in the assembly (1 Corinthians 11). End to Disunity and Prejudice on the basis of Gender Galatians 3:28 in Christ there is neither... male nor female Join Men in Becoming a Disciple and a Learner. Luke 10: Mary, who sat at the Lord s feet listening to what he said We read of Mary of Bethany sitting at Jesus feet. In other words, she joined the men in becoming a disciple and a learner (Luke 10:38 42). Here is my take and other s take on the passage of scripture that seems to imply that women, solely on the basis of their gender are to be quiet in church, and as a gender should not teach a man anything. Please don t hate me, if you disagree with me, and please don t love me because you do agree with me. To be comfortable with this transition of pastoral leadership, in which a woman is going to serve as the Lead Pastor, making decisions, including teaching men, not being silent in the assembly, but rather being the primary vocal communicator of the gospel, you will need to come to a conclusion about this topic and this passage of scripture. I, and others, think it implies and means one thing, and others will imply and say it means something else. Many, when they hear of a woman pastor, automatically default to judging and say, they don t take the bible as their authoritative rule of faith and conduct. So I don t tell you what I am saying lightly. Some very smart, highly placed men will disagree with this and it will be okay if you don t agree. If you don t agree, you may be better served in a different church which subscribes to a different theology. In good conscience and in adequate timing, I have not hidden any decision, or tried to hurry a decision, but rather, given you months to hear the future decision, and to be able to question me privately or publicly. So far, no one has stepped forward to question, nor to criticize. So, the next two weeks is your time to meet with me, and give me concerns. If no one does, then, be aware that this is a prayed over decision, and one in which you will need to fully grasp what the bibles is saying in this passage of scripture. 6

Paul s basic point is to insist that women too must be allowed to learn Allowed to Learn. 1 Timothy 2:11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. Just a FYI: as a bible professor at the Addis Ababa Bible college, full of men, the same rule is for them. Men can only learn when in quietness and full submission. This passage is allowing women to be learners, which was a new thing. Think classroom setting and demeanor. If every student acted like the teacher, nothing would work. Vs. 12 says, I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; The word Paul uses here for authority (authentein) is used elsewhere for brutal or domineering forms of leadership so this probably refers to particular issues in this congregation, rather than being a more general comment on the leadership of women. Another commentary says this about the word for authority. The word rendered to have authority (authenteō) means to have the mastery of or more colloquially lord it over. In public meetings Christian women must refrain from laying down the law to men and hence are enjoined to silence 1 As The Message translation puts it, I want women to get in there with the men in humility before God... doing something beautiful for God and becoming beautiful doing it (vv.9 10, MSG). Breathe deep, people. Open your minds to what the bible is saying, not what someone of a different theological background is telling you how to think. Chronological Order cannot be considered significant. Verse13: For Adam was formed first, then Eve. The assumption seems to be that the original creation, with the Creator s own imprimatur upon it, must set a precedent for determining the true order of the sexes. Yet chronological order alone cannot in this case be regarded as significant since Adam was created after the animals and was nevertheless given dominion over them. 1 Guthrie, D. (1990). Pastoral Epistles: An Introduction and Commentary (Vol. 14, pp. 90 91). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press. 7

The point here is that mankind consisted of a pair (Adam and Eve). Eve was intended as a companion to Adam. Their relationship is not to be considered as competitive but as complementary. 2 Mutual submission as a balanced pair is actually the bibles view. Another reason why woman must not teach man is now added. Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman. Whereas Eve was deceived or beguiled, Adam sinned with his eyes open. As Bengel says, The serpent deceived the woman; the woman did not deceive the man, but persuaded him (Gen. 3:17). Logically this should make Adam more culpable, but Paul is concerned here primarily with the inadvisability of women teachers. Is it possible that since Eve is here specifically in mind, the point being made is that she misled Adam because she was not fully acquainted with the nature of the prohibited tree and was not therefore in a position to instruct Adam? If this view were tenable, it would suggest that Paul s prohibition of women teaching was conditioned by the background of the basic lack of education of women in the contemporary world. This would explain the emphasis on learning rather than teaching in verses 11 and 12. Such a suggestion has its appeal, although its interpretation of the Genesis passage is somewhat forced. Nevertheless, the question of women teachers cannot be divorced from the first-century disparity between men and women in the matter of education. Now that women are equally educated, this no longer is the issue. Eve being deceived and then using her womanly skills to persuade her husband. (Listen, to me, women, you have persuasive abilities. As a gender, you are much more persuasive, and combined with learning, which will guard you from deception, the woman gender is a much better candidate for a lead pastor than a male.) Hear me church. A learned, mature in the Lord woman will be a much better persuader of the gospel, and a better persuasive preacher than a man. Paul s point is that Eve persuaded Adam, due to her being deceived due to her lack of knowledge of the tree. If anyone is to blame in the scenario, it was Adam and that is why Adam is the one who is ultimately judged for the fall of all humanity. Romans 5:12 says Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man Paul did not absolve Adam from responsibility in the entry of sin into the world in Romans 5:12ff., where Eve is not even mentioned. Nevertheless, Paul does mention the serpent s beguiling of Eve in a different context in 2 Corinthians 11:3: But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent s cunning, The final verse we will expound on is verse 15: But women will be saved through childbearing if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. 2 Guthrie, D. (1990). Pastoral Epistles: An Introduction and Commentary (Vol. 14, p. 91). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press. 8

It seems to make women s salvation a matter of good works of a particular kind, and it is inconceivable that Paul meant this. 3 It is probable that the duty of child-bearing is emphasized to offset the unnatural abstinence advocated by the false teachers (cf. Jeremias). 4 It is most likely an encouragement to women in their natural sphere. It is possible that there is here an allusion to the promise of Genesis 3:15, to the promise of the one who would crush the serpent s head. 5 In conclusion on this verse and in general, when one becomes conceited and considers themselves an expert on the bible, it is difficult to reach a conclusion. It is also difficult to do anything worthwhile. A worthy goal for this congregation is to do the difficult thing - to prayerfully listen to the Word of God and to the Holy Spirit on this topic of a woman lead pastor. 3 Guthrie, D. (1990). Pastoral Epistles: An Introduction and Commentary (Vol. 14, p. 92). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press. 4 Guthrie, D. (1990). Pastoral Epistles: An Introduction and Commentary (Vol. 14, p. 92).
