6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER I have called you friends. Authentic friendship can seem hard to come by these days, especially in our transient society. We move away from family, change jobs, switch parishes, and end up in entirely new places with entirely new people. When we look for new friends, we all have different qualities we're looking for. While we may think of certain standards of behavior necessary to be a good friend, we would hardly refer to them as rules or commandments. In fact, if a friendship or romantic relationship becomes characterized by imposed obligations, we would rightly be suspicious. Friendships, we understand, ought to be characterized by freedom. We love the person, even sacrifice for them at times because, within ourselves, we want to maintain the friendship. So why does Jesus use the language of command as he calls the Apostles his friends? You are my friends if you do what I command you. Jesus is transforming the concept of commandment. In the Jewish heritage of the Apostles, they would hear the word command and immediately think of the strict Levitical law and distance from God. In introducing the language of friendship, Jesus ties commandment to inner freedom of heart. The disciples have this freedom precisely because they know what [the] Master is doing. Jesus has invited his followers into intimate friendship all along. He shares openly with them. He has patience with their flaws. He isn't scandalized by their failures. He celebrates their successes. We, too, have been called by love and invited into a relationship with Jesus. It is you and I that Jesus chooses and appoints. This new commandment to love one another is received around the shared table in the breaking of the bread.

BAPTIZED In our parish were baptized: Vivienne Emily Zahorodnyj (Nicholas and Anita) Christian B. Kosir (Ante P. and Jacqueline T.) May God's abundant blessing be always with our newly baptized, their parents and sponsors! MAY - MONTH OF MARY The month of May is the month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God's mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance (Pope Bl. Paul VI). During May we plan to pray rosary before Sunday Masses. There are many intentions to pray for. Would you join us? FIRST COMMUNION CELEBRATIONS Our second graders will celebrate their First Holy Communion in English this Sunday, May 6, at the Mass at 1:30 p.m. First Holy Communion will be celebrated in Croatian on Sunday, May 27, at 11 a.m. Please, keep all of these young people in your prayers. We hope that receiving Jesus in the Sacraments may never become routine, for them or for us. MAY CROWNING May Crowning celebration will be on Thursday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the church. Join us for a special devotion to Our Lady, our Queen and Mother. CROATIAN DAY AT DALEY PLAZA Enjoy Croatian food and culture on Daley Plaza on Friday, May 11, from 10 a.m. Program and cultural performances will take place at 11:30 a.m. MOTHER S DAY FLOWER SALE On Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13, beautiful bouquets of fresh-cut flowers will be sold after all Masses. Choose the perfect bouquet from a variety of colors and assortments: Carnation Bouquets ($10), Spring Mixed Bouquets ($10), Rose/Daisy Bouquets ($15), Deluxe Garden Hydrangea Bouquets ($30). Proceeds will be used to help young women facing a crisis pregnancy situation and in need assistance. Please, support this life-saving work of The Women s Centers of Greater Chicago Land. CATHOLIC CHARITIES COLLECTION ON MOTHER S DAY In the impoverished and violent neighborhoods, Catholic Charities is often the only place where people can go for help. Families in crisis can find new strength and the courage to build a better future. Your Mother s Day gift will feed, comfort, shelter, and care for the poor and vulnerable. Catholic Charities has provided hope for 100 years. Learn more at www.catholiccharities.net. RENEW MY CHURCH Renew My Church is a multi-year initiative to ensure the sustainable growth of our Church for the future. The objective of Renew My Church is to create vital, vibrant, life-giving, Catholic communities across the Archdiocese of Chicago and inspire disciples to accompany all members of our family of faith to seize this moment to make the mission of Christ our own for our time. All 344 archdiocesan parishes are divided into 97 groupings, which will meet over the next few years. The pastor and 3 others from each parish are part of the principal and 2 people from the school are also part of that team. St. Jerome Croatian Grouping Discernment We had many meeting, where various potential structures were discussed. Cardinal Cupich will make the final determination after evaluating all inputs. Please, pray for the success of Renew My Church process.
