WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Dave Colvin PRELUDE The Everlasting Arms Organ on a tune by Anthony Showalter CALL TO WORSHIP Dave Colvin Come, all of you who long for light. We want to see the light shining in the midst of the darkness. Come, all of you who want your joy increased. We yearn to be filled with this joy. Come, all of you who are carrying heavy burdens. We have many to offer. Take them from us, Lord. Come, all who need a savior. We are seeking the Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Prince of Peace. Come, let us worship the Lord. We are here to praise the Lord! *SONGS OF WORSHIP: I DANCED IN THE MORNING (VERSE 1) I danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth. At Bethlehem I had my birth. (REFRAIN) Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he, and I ll lead you all, wherever you may be, and I ll lead you all in the dance, said he. (VERSE 2)

I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee, but they would not dance and they would not follow me. I danced for the fishermen, for James and John. They came with me and the dance went on. (VERSE 3) I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame. The holy people said it was shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high, and left me there on a cross to die. (REPEAT REFRAIN) (VERSE 4) I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black. It s hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body and they thought I d gone, but I am the dance and I still go on. (REPEAT REFRAIN) (VERSE 5) They cut me down and I leapt up high. I am the life that will never, never die. I ll live in you if you ll live in me, I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. (REPEAT REFRAIN) HOLY SPIRIT, TRUTH DIVINE (Hymn #303, to the tune of #302) (VERSE 1) Holy Spirit, Truth divine, dawn upon this soul of mine; Voice of God and inward light, wake my spirit, clear my sight. (VERSE 2) Holy Spirit, Love divine, glow within this heart of mine; kindle every high desire, purify me with your fire. (VERSE 3) Holy Spirit, Power divine, fill and nerve this will of mine; boldly may I always live, bravely serve, and gladly give. (VERSE 4) Holy Spirit, Law divine, reign within this soul of mine; be my law, and I shall be firmly bound, forever free.

(VERSE 5) Holy Spirit, Peace divine, still this restless heart of mine; speak to calm this tossing sea, grant me your tranquility. (VERSE 6) Holy Spirit, Joy divine, gladden now this heart of mine; in the desert ways I sing -- spring, O Living Water, spring! Camille Troxel Call to Confession If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in God s word I hope. Psalm 130:3-5 TIME OF PRAYER Prayer of Confession Lord of everlasting covenant, Have mercy on us. We have broken promises and we have turned our hearts from true worship. What you have created as paradise, we have destroyed and taken for granted. What you have sanctified, we have ignored. We do not care for your world as we ought to, We do not serve your people as we have been called, We do not trust you with our whole hearts and whole lives. Grant to us humility and righteousness, That we may be your present peace and growing kindness. That we may listen to your voice and receive your Spirit now and forevermore. Amen. [Silent Prayer] Assurance of Pardon Even as we look to the world, God looks to us and saves us, redeeming us from all misery and shortcoming. The

Spirit of the Lord has granted us the peace of Christ and reminded us that the promise of God lives eternal. Amen. SONG OF WORSHIP: BREATHE ON ME, BREATH OF GOD (Hymn #295) (VERSE 1) Breathe on me, Breath of God, fill me with life anew, that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do. (VERSE 2) Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure, until my will is one with thine, to do and to endure. (VERSE 3) Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly thine, until this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine. (VERSE 4) Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die, but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity. PLEASE REMAIN SEATED PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Rev. PLEASE REMAIN SEATED (VERSE 2) Spirit of the living God, move among us all; make us one in heart and mind, make us one in love: humble, caring, selfless, sharing- Spirit of the living God, fill our lives with love! (REPEAT VERSE 1) READING OF THE SCRIPTURES Diana Blank 1 Samuel 3:1 20 (NIV) 1 The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.

2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, Here I am. 5 And he ran to Eli and said, Here I am; you called me. But Eli said, I did not call; go back and lie down. So he went and lay down. 6 Again the Lord called, Samuel! And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, Here I am; you called me. My son, Eli said, I did not call; go back and lie down. 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8 A third time the Lord called, Samuel! And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, Here I am; you called me. Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, Samuel! Samuel! Then Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. 11 And the Lord said to Samuel: See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family from beginning to end. 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them. 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, The guilt of Eli s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering. 15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, 16 but Eli called him and said, Samuel, my son. Samuel answered, Here I am.

17 What was it he said to you? Eli asked. Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you. 18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes. 19 The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel s words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 4:5 12 (NIV) 5 For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus sake. 6 For God, who said, Let light shine out of darkness, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God s glory displayed in the face of Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. MESSAGE Rev. Peter Blank A Vertical Habit of Listening

*SONG OF WORSHIP: ONE BREAD, ONE BODY (REFRAIN) One bread, one body, one Lord of all, one cup of blessing which we bless. And we, though many, throughout the earth, we are one body in this one Lord. (VERSE 1) Gentile or Jew, servant or free, woman or man, no more. (REPEAT REFRAIN) (VERSE 2) Many the gifts, many the works, one in the Lord of all.. (REPEAT REFRAIN) (VERSE 3) Grain for the fields, scattered and grown, gathered to one, for all. SHARING AROUND CHRIST S TABLE COMMUNION Rev. Peter Blank Christ becomes a part of our flesh through Holy Communion. The Lord s Supper is not an end in itself. It always points beyond itself to celebrate God s grace and covenant faithfulness. This does not mean the physical aspects of the celebration are incidental or unimportant. The Lord s Supper should be a celebration fitting to the abundant grace of God offered in Christ. Invitation to the Lord s Supper Breaking of the Bread & Pouring of the Cup Sharing the Body and Blood of Christ *CLOSING SONG It is the custom at Knox, in celebration of Holy Communion, to hold hands and form a circle around the sanctuary to sing our closing song

Question for Reflection Most of us strive to demonstrate trustworthy character in our lives, often not understanding trustworthy character as a fruit of our relationship with God. Reflect on 1 Samuel 3:19 20 ( As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord ). How does this challenge our understanding of what makes us trustworthy? Household Prayer: Morning Praise the Lord, for it is your new mercy that woke me this morning. I praise you as I see your wonderful works through the window of day. I praise you as I feel the movement of your mysterious works in me. May this new day be a song to my Creator, who is willing to befriend me in renewed grace. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening Lord, I close this day acknowledging you as my God, my helper, my refuge, for it is your grace that sustained me all day. I lay down my burdens of the unwise choices, the unfinished tasks; I humbly ask that you may cover me in the blanket of mercy. I praise you with a joyful song of your salvation in which I find peace and hope through Jesus Christ. Amen.
