SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SONGS OF ASCENSION July 7 & 8, 2018 5:00 pm & 8:15 am AS WE GATHER Our culture is fascinated with rebels. Characters such as Han Solo, Ferris Bueller, and Katniss Everdeen are not perfect, but we admire how they stand up to authority. Whether being a rebel is good or bad depends on whom one is rebelling against. When the authority is God Almighty, rebels are not looked upon so fondly. Israel rebelled against God, and Ezekiel told them just that. The people of Nazareth rejected Jesus, rebelling against their own hometown prophet. Paul was a rebel himself, first against the followers of Jesus, and then on their behalf. Sin is rebellion against God. Yet God forgives our rebellion through Jesus death and resurrection, turning our rebellion into reconciliation and rejoicing. Despite our weaknesses and inclination to rebel, God s grace comes to us in Jesus, and He is sufficient for us. PRELUDE RINGING OF THE BELLS - We Prepare our hearts and minds for worship WELCOME PREPARATION OPENING HYMN Jesus Christ is Risen Today LSB 457 (tied #13) Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our Triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heav nly king, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia! But the pains which He endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured, Alleluia! Now above the sky He s king, Alleluia! Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia! Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as His love; Alleluia! Praise Him, all ye heav nly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 150 Praise the Lord! Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty heavens! Praise Him for His mighty deeds; praise Him according to His excellent greatness! Praise Him with trumpet sound; praise Him with lute and harp! 1

ALL: Praise Him with tambourine and dance; praise Him with strings and pipe! Praise Him with sounding cymbals; praise Him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (If you would like private confession and absolution, please call the office at (314) 832-5600 to make an appointment with Pastor Clark) In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (OR) Seminary Student: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. John 1:12, Philippians 1:6 2

SERVICE OF THE WORD SERMON SERIES HYMN When In Our Music God is Glorified LSB 796, v. 1, 3, & 5 When in our music God is glorified And adoration leaves no room for pride, It is as though the whole creation cried: Alleluia! So has the Church, in liturgy and song, In faith and love, through centuries of wrong, Borne witness to the truth in evr y tongue: Alleluia! Let evr y instrument be tuned for praise! Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise! And may God give us faith to sing always: Alleluia! SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, Your almighty power is made known chiefly in showing mercy. Grant us the fullness of Your grace, that we may be called to repentance and made partakers of Your heavenly treasures; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Please Be Seated) OLD TESTAMENT Ezekiel 2:1 5 (Ezekiel is sent to Israel, a nation of rebels, with God s Word.) 1 And he said to me, Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak with you. 2 And as he spoke to me, the Spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. 3 And he said to me, Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to nations of rebels, who have rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day. 4 The descendants also are impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD. 5 And whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house) they will know that a prophet has been among them. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3

EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 12:1 10 (We rejoice in our weaknesses because they showcase the power, mercy, and grace of Christ.) 1 I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. 3 And I know that this man was caught up into paradise whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows 4 and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. 5 On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses 6 though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. 7 So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA and VERSE LSB 205 Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Mark 6:1 13 (Jesus is rejected in His hometown but sends out the twelve disciples to proclaim repentance, cast out demons, and heal the sick.) The congregation is invited to read the scripture in bold The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the sixth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 1 He went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they took offense at him. 4 And Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household. 5 And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching. 7 And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff no bread, no bag, no money in their belts 9 but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. 10 And he said to them, Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. 11 And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them. 12 So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them. This is the Gospel of Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. 4

APOSTLES CREED LSB 207 I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. (Please Be Seated) CHILDREN S TIME Praise to the Lord, the Almighty LSB 790, v. 1 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise Him, for He is your health and salvation! Let all who hear Now to His temple draw near, Joining in glad adoration! HYMN OF THE DAY Songs of Ascension (ranked #5) Go, My Children, with My Blessing LSB 922 (ranked #5) Go, My children, with My blessing, Never alone. Waking, sleeping, I am with you; You are My own. In My love s baptismal river I have made you Mine forever. Go, My children, with My blessing You are My own. Go, My children, sins forgiven, At peace and pure. Here you learned how much I love you, What I can cure. Here you heard My dear Son s story; Here you touched Him, saw His glory. Go, My children, sins forgiven, At peace and pure. Go, My children, fed and nourished, Closer to Me; Grow in love and love by serving, Joyful and free. Here My Spirit s power filled you; Here His tender comfort stilled you. Go, My children, fed and nourished, Joyful and free. I the Lord will bless and keep you And give you peace; I the Lord will smile upon you And give you peace: I the Lord will be your Father, Savior, Comforter, and Brother. Go, My children; I will keep you And give you peace. SERMON 5

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. For children and infants, that they be raised by faithful parents and guardians, and grow in strength and in knowledge of the Lord, let us pray to the Lord. For those in power, especially elected officials, that they would treat those under their power with justice and compassion, let us pray to the Lord. For the elderly and homebound, that God would strengthen them through His Word and Sacraments, let us pray to the Lord. For the leaders of this congregation, that God would send His guidance and wisdom for the benefit of this congregation and community, let us pray to the Lord. For those who are sick and recovering, [especially...], that they rely on the all-sufficient grace of Christ, let us pray to the Lord. (Special Petitions) Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your power, mercy, and grace. (Please Be Seated) GATHERING OF OFFERINGS SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT We believe Holy Communion is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christian to eat and to drink. If you are a communicant member of a Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregation, please feel free to commune with us. If not, please speak with the pastor before receiving the Lord s Supper. PREFACE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. 6

PROPER PREFACE It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: SANCTUS Holy, Holy, Holy Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9 LSB 208 Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth adored; Heav n and earth with full acclaim shout the glory of Your name. Sing hosanna in the highest, sing hosanna to the Lord; Truly blest is He who comes in the name of the Lord! THE LORD S PRAYER LSB 209 Hear us as we pray in His name as He has taught us: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD LSB 209 PAX DOMINI The Peace of the Lord John 20:19 LSB 209 The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI Lamb of God John 1:29 LSB 210 O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, You take the sin of the world away; O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray. O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, You take the sin of the world away; Have mercy on us, Jesus Christ, And grant us peace, O Lord, we pray. (Please Be Seated) (Please Note: Communion will be distributed in a continuous line during our 8:15 am worship while broadcasting on KFUO radio) DISTRIBUTION HYMNS Crown Him with Many Crowns LSB 525 (tied #11) Crown Him with many crowns, The Lamb upon His throne; Hark how the heav nly anthem drowns All music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing Of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless king Through all eternity. Crown Him the virgin s Son, The God incarnate born, Whose arm those crimson trophies won Which now His brow adorn: Fruit of the mystic rose, Yet of that rose the stem, The root whence mercy ever flows, The babe of Bethlehem. 7

Crown Him the Lord of love. Behold His hands and side, Rich wounds, yet visible above, In beauty glorified. No angels in the sky Can fully bear that sight, But downward bend their wond ring eyes At mysteries so bright. Crown Him the Lord of Life, Who triumphed o er the grave And rose victorious in the strife For those He came to save. His glories now we sing, Who died and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring and lives that death may die. Crown Him the Lord of heav n, Enthroned in worlds above, Crown Him the king to whom is giv n The wondrous name of Love. Crown Him with many crowns As thrones before Him fall; Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, For He is king of all. For All the Saints LSB 677 (tied #18) For all the saints who from their labors rest, Who Thee by faith before the world confessed, Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might; Thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia! Alleluia! Oh, may Thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old And win with them the victor s crown of gold! Alleluia! Alleluia! Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Alleluia! Alleluia! And when the fight is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave again and arms are strong. Alleluia! Alleluia! The golden evening brightens in the west; Soon, soon to faithful warriors cometh rest; Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. Alleluia! Alleluia! But, lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day: The saints triumphant rise in bright array; The King of Glory passes on His way. Alleluia! Alleluia! From earth s wide bounds, from ocean s farthest coast, Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost: Alleluia! Alleluia! 8

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross LSB 425 (tied #20) When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of Glory died, My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ, my God; All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. See, from His head, His hands, His feet Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e er such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a tribute far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all! NUNC DIMITTIS - Song of Simeon Luke 2:29 32 LSB 211, v. 1 O Lord, now let Your servant Depart in heav nly peace, For I have seen the glory Of Your redeeming grace: A light to lead the Gentiles Unto Your holy hill, The glory of Your people, Your chosen Israel. BENEDICAMUS and BENEDICTION Psalm 103:1 Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26 CLOSING HYMN Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee LSB 803 (tied #18) Joyful, joyful we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love! Hearts unfold like flowr s before Thee. Praising Thee, their sun above, Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the gloom of doubt away, Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day. All Thy works with joy surround Thee, Earth and heav n reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, Center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flow ry meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird, and flowing fountain Call us to rejoice in Thee. Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest, Well-spring of the joy of living, Ocean depth of happy rest! Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Fountainhead of love divine: Joyful, we Thy heav n inherit! Joyful, we by grace are Thine!
