November 5, 2017 Prelude TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH Stevens Point, Wisconsin Ministers: Every Baptized Member ALL SAINTS SUNDAY Today s Liturgy uses The Hymnal Supplement, alt. 8:15 & 10:45 a.m. Call to Worship: (8:15) God of Grace and God of Glory C. Farnell (10:45) Be My Guide B. A. Ramseth Announcements *A Litany for All Saints Day P: O God, we confess that we are humbled that you have called us Saints. A: We feel so strongly that we are still sinners, people in need of your constant forgiveness. C: But, you have redeemed us, and we are seen as saints in your loving eyes. A: Make us fit to be called your children. C: Make us able to live the lives of saintly people; give us your Spirit to guide us in loving you and serving our neighbors. P: We remember before you the ones who have gone before us. Having gone on to live with you, they are the still beloved saints whom we love. A: Thank you for giving them to us to know and to love in our journeys on earth. C: Thank you for the great example of faithful living that they shared with us in their lives. All: Make us worthy, O God, to follow their faithful pathways, and in the end, bring us home to live with you and with all those we love. (During the singing of the hymn, you are invited to come forward with your lighted candle in memory of the saints in your life.) *Opening Hymn: For All the Saints ELW #422 (with interludes) *Please stand -1- *Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. *Prayer of the Day Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Children s Lesson First Reading: Revelation 7:9 17 9 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10 They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! 11 And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen. 13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? 14 I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. Then he said to me, These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. 16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; 17 for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. -2-

Psalm 34 * Gospel Verse A: Oh, magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together. C: I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears. A: This poor soul cried out, and the LORD heard him, And saved him out of all his troubles. C: The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them. A: Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him! C: Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! A: The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing. C: The Lord redeems the soul of His servants, And none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned. Second Reading: 1 John 3:1 3 1 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. -3- *Gospel: Matthew 5:1 12 P: The Holy Gospel according to Matthew chapter 5. 1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Sermon: Pastor Clay Schmit Hymn of the Day: In Christ There Is No East or West ELW #650-4-

*The Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Prayers of the Church: A:...For these things we pray: C: [sung response] Offertory Prayer P: Let us pray. Merciful God, C: everything in heaven and earth belongs to you. We joyfully release what you have entrusted to us. May these gifts be signs of our whole lives returned to you, dedicated to the healing and unity of all creation, through Jesus Christ. Amen. *The Great Thanksgiving P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is our duty and our joy...we praise your name and join their unending hymn: *Holy, Holy, Holy P:...we commend all for whom we pray. C: Amen. *Sharing of the Peace P: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. Offering Offertory Anthem: (8:15) There s a Wideness in God s Mercy P. *Lord s Prayer C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Communion The table of Christ is open to all who believe. You are welcome to come to this meal.
