St. Mary on the Hill August 30, 2015 In order to help all of us prepare spiritually for the Holy Father s upcoming visit to Philadelphia September 26 th - 27 th, Father Jerry has asked some of the clergy of St. Mary s to offer our reflections on the theme of the World Meeting of Families which is our own pastoral focus for the year Love is our Mission: the Family Fully Alive. The World Meeting of Families Congress, to be held September 22 nd -25 th, will immediately precede the papal visit. Fr. Lou Lindsey s Corner In announcing the theme for the World Meeting of Families, Philadelphia Archbishop, Charles Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., pointed out that the theme was inspired by the words of the early Church Father, St. Irenaeus, who said that the glory of God is man fully alive. In like manner, the Archbishop said, the glory of men and women is their capacity to love as God loves. And rarely can that love be lived out more intimately and fruitfully than in the family. Every moment of every day, a mother and father are teaching and guiding each other and their children, while witnessing about their love to the world beyond their home. The structure of marriage if lived faithfully naturally points a man and woman outward toward the world, as well as inward toward one another and their children. As Augustine once said: To be faithful in little things is a big thing. Simply by living their vocation, a husband and wife become the most important living cell of society. Marriage is the foundation and guarantee of the family. And the family is the foundation and guarantee of society. It s within the intimate community of the family that a son knows he is loved and has value. In observing her parents, a daughter first learns basic values like loyalty, honesty and selfless concern for others, which build up the character of the wider society. Truth is always most persuasive, not when we read about it in a book or hear about it in a classroom, but when we see it incarnated in the actions of our parents. The preparatory catechesis document for the 2015 World Meeting of Families, entitled Love Is Our Mission the Family Fully Alive, addresses Catholic family issues from a global context. As Archbishop Chaput went on to say, It covers all the basic issues the problems as well as the joys of family life and situates it in the context of the culture of the world, not just the United States, because it s a world meeting of families. The catechesis explains how all of Catholic teaching about sex, marriage, and the family flows from our basic beliefs about Jesus. It offers a narrative beginning with our creation and notes our fall as humans and the challenges we face, but emphasizes God s plan for our salvation. Love indeed is our mission, and it is by loving God and one another that we will be fully alive. The catechesis focuses on 10 themes. It teaches that human beings are created for joy and have a mission of love to receive God s love and share it with others. It discusses the meaning of human sexuality, the sacramental nature of Christian marriage and marital love as an image of Jesus Christ s faithfulness to the Church. The document also discusses the role of children in marriage and the different ways marriage, the priesthood, vowed religious life and the celibate lay vocation can be spiritually fruitful. Other topics discussed include temptations and other challenges to family life, including poverty, affluence, pornography, contraception and intellectual mistakes that harm family life. The catechesis notes the painful situations facing many people, as well as the impact that divorce or same-sex attraction can have on the life of the family. The World Meeting of Families website points out that Christian families and networks of families should be sources of mercy, safety, friendship and support for those struggling with these issues. In light of this, I found it quite encouraging that the catechesis reiterated that in the Sacrament of Marriage, God has given us the gift of experiencing His covenant. In the marriage covenant, husband and wife live together in light of the covenant already established by God and Israel, Christ and the Church. Because of this, we are able to experience marriage as the seed bed of a family, the nucleus of the domestic church, which is itself an essential member of the wider universal Church. This should encourage all of us to pray that we may become, more and more, a people who respect and foster the sanctity of human life, and to be willing and able to have families and to raise them up in ways pleasing to the Lord. The catechesis could be a helpful tool for all of us as we seek to withstand the spirit of the age, and foster a culture of life while resisting the surrounding culture of death as it seeks to deceive and confuse all humankind regarding the God given nature of men and women as created in the likeness of God. Fr. Lou Lindsey
