TITHES AND OFFERINGS In any event God owns everything When it comes to a list of what God owns, here is a partial list from a variety of Bible passages: 1. Every animal and bird and creature (Psalm 50) 2. All the silver and all the gold (Haggai 2:8) 3. All the land (Leviticus 25) 4. The wealth of the nations (Haggai 2) 5. The wealth of the sinner (Proverbs 13:22, Ecc. 2:26) 6. Everything in heaven and earth (1 Chronicles 29) 7. All who live in the world (Psalm 24) 8. Riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity (Proverbs 8) 9. Wisdom, power and counsel (Job 12) 10. The sun and the stars in the heaven, even the highest heavens (Genesis 1) 11. All things (Colossians 1:16-17) 12. Treasures of darkness and secret riches (Isaiah 45:3) 13. Advancements and promotions (Ps. 75:6,7; Ps. 113:7,8; Daniel 2:21) Jesus came to fulfil the law. Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. Heb 7:20-22 20 And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest: 21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) 22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. Matt 23:23 23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Aren't we cursed if we don't tithe? Absolutely not. In order for us to be cursed we would still have to be under the law God gave to the Israelites. We are not under those laws. Not for tithing, not for obeying the Sabbath laws, not for burning sacrifices, not for any of those things the 3

Israelites had to do. Gal 3:13 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." (NIV) Jesus Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law. God is not going send his son to be cursed for us and then curse us himself because we don't tithe. The curse mentioned in Malachi 3:8-11 was for the Israelites because they were still under the law and the law required them to tithe The followers of Jesus Left All Luke 5:28 And he left all, rose up, and followed him. Luke 18:28 Then Peter said, Lo, we have left all, and followed thee. Matthew 8:22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead. Matthew 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go [and] sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come [and] follow me. Mark 2:14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the [son] of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. Mark 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. Luke 5:27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. The poor woman gave all Mark 12:41-44 41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. 42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. 43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the 4

treasury: 44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living. (KJV) Jesus said deny yourself Matthew 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Matthew 19:29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. Acts 20:35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. Christian Communism Act 4:34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, Act 4:35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need. Act 4:36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, Act 4:37 Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet. To ministers of the Gospel that have need I Corinthians 9:9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? I Timothy 5:18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer [is] worthy of his reward. I Timothy 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. I Timothy 5:18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer [is] worthy of his reward. 5

I Corinthians 8:9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak. I Corinthians 8:10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols; I Corinthians 8:11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? I Corinthians 8:12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. I Corinthians 8:13 Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend. I Corinthians 9:1 Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord? I Corinthians 9:2 If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord. I Corinthians 9:3 Mine answer to them that do examine me is this, I Corinthians 9:4 Have we not power to eat and to drink? I Corinthians 9:5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and [as] the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? I Corinthians 9:6 Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working? I Corinthians 9:7 Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? I Corinthians 9:8 Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? I Corinthians 9:9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? I Corinthians 9:10 Or saith he [it] altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, [this] is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. 6

I Corinthians 9:11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, [is it] a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? I Corinthians 9:12 If others be partakers of [this] power over you, [are] not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ. I Corinthians 9:13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live [of the things] of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? I Corinthians 9:14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. I Corinthians 9:15 But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for [it were] better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void. Restraining giving when enough Exo 36:3 And they received of Moses all the offering, which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, to make it withal. And they brought yet unto him free offerings every morning. Exo 36:4 And all the wise men, that wrought all the work of the sanctuary, came every man from his work which they made; Exo 36:5 And they spake unto Moses, saying, The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work, which the LORD commanded to make. Exo 36:6 And Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary. So the people were restrained from bringing. Widows I Timothy 5:16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed. We should give as directed in the fulfilled law of God 2 Corinthians 9:7 "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 7

Isn't tithing God's way to make Christians prosperous? Absolutely not! With all the sermons that are given about how important it is to tithe it may seem to some that tithing is the way to get blessed financially. Not so. Of all the wealthy people in the Bible none of them prospered or got rich by tithing! Not even Solomon who was the richest man in biblical times. God just decided to bless him 1 Kings 3:7-14 and 2 Chronicles 1:7-12. The book of Proverbs states many things can make a person prosper like wisdom, diligence, giving freely, being generous to the poor, being righteous, and humility, just to name a few. If Christians practice these things, we give God the opportunity to bless us financially. Tithing is not God's way to prosper Christians. The poor woman gave all Mark 12:41-44 41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. 42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. 43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: 44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living. (KJV) Aim of it all Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Romans 11:14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them. 1Corinthians 9:22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. John 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. John 15:8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. 8

Investing for God Matthew 3:10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matthew 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matthew 25:27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Luke 19:23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury? Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Borrowing, Lending owing, surety and saving (Psalm 37:21) "The wicked borrows and does not pay back, but the righteous is gracious and gives" (Ecclesiastes 5:5) "It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay" (Romans 13:8) "Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another, for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law" (Proverbs 17:18) "A man lacking in sense pledges and becomes guarantor in the presence of his neighbor" "The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets." Proverbs 21:20 14. Wealth, honor, strength and power (I Chronicles 29:12) Psalms 119:122 Be surety for thy servant for good: let not the proud oppress me. Proverbs 6:1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, 9

Proverbs 11:15 He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure. Proverbs 17:18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend. Proverbs 20:16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman. Proverbs 27:13 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman. Acts 12:11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the LORD hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. Hebrews 7:22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. Exodus 22:25 If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury. Leviticus 25:36 Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. Leviticus 25:37 Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor lend him thy victuals for increase. Deuteronomy 23:19 Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of any thing that is lent upon usury: Deuteronomy 23:20 Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to possess it. Nehemiah 5:7 Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them. Nehemiah 5:10 I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury. Psalms 15:5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved. 10

Proverbs 28:8 He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor. Isaiah 24:2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. Jeremiah 15:10 Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me. Ezekiel 18:8 He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man, Ezekiel 18:13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him. Ezekiel 18:17 That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. Ezekiel 22:12 In thee have they taken gifts to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord GOD. Matthew 25:27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Luke 19:23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury? Not caring for family 1Timothy 5:8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. 1Corinthians 7:33 But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. 1Corinthians 7:34 There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in 11

body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband. God looks after His own Mat 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Mat 6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Mat 6:26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Mat 6:27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? Mat 6:28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: Mat 6:29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Mat 6:30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Mat 6:31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? Mat 6:32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Mat 6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
