Continue to Peter s House in Capernaum, which reveals something of the domestic life of a New Testament fisherman. The contemporary church at Tabgha celebrates the Miracle of the Multiplication. Note the mosaic floor from a Byzantine-era church, and the section in front of the ancient altar depicting two fish and a basket filled with loaves of bread. Break for a St. Peter s Fish lunch. Then, drive to the Mount of the Beatitudes, site of the Sermon on the Mount and the Miracle of the Multiplication (Matthew 5). BEIT SHEAN CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY NAZARETH VILLAGE WESTERN WALL THURSDAY, MAY 30 - JERUSALEM (B,D) Visit the ruins of Beth Shean. In its 7,000-year history, the Egyptian, Roman and Byzantine empires occupied the site, attracted by abundant water, fertile soil and the situation at an important eastwest crossroads. Continue to Tzipori to see the spectacular ruins of a Galilean village from the days of Jesus. Drive to the ruins of Caesarea, a large port city built by Herod the Great to honor Roman Caesar Augustus. In order to supply water to the city s evergrowing population, he built an aqueduct system stretching from the springs of Mt. Carmel to Caesarea. Part of this system is still visible today. The Book of Acts refers repeatedly to Caesarea as the city Peter visited (Acts 10). Then, climb the Judean Hills to the most beautiful city in the world, JERUSALEM, for dinner and overnight. RAMADA JERUSALEM is a 4.5-star property. All rooms are nonsmoking and equipped with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, cable TV, minibar, coffee/tea maker, safe, and hairdryer. Facilities and services include indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a restaurant. www.wyndhamhotels.com/ramada/jerusalem-israel FRIDAY, MAY 31 - JERUSALEM (B,D) Drive 6 miles south to Bethlehem, birthplace of Jesus, to visit the Church of the Nativity, the oldest church in the holy land still in use. Construction began in the year 326, based on the local tradition that Jesus was born in a cave at the edge of the village. Sing carols in a site that has been visited by millions of pilgrims. Return to Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives for an awe inspiring, panoramic view of the Old City. Walk down the Mount of Olives to the site of Jesus Agony. Visit the Church of Pater Noster on the hill where Jesus was inspired with the Lord s Prayer. The walls of the church are covered with the prayer written in over 85 languages. Walk to one of the newest churches in Jerusalem, Dominus Flevit, (Jesus Wept). During construction in 1955, archaeologists uncovered artifacts dating back to the Canaanite period, as well as tombs from both the Second Temple and Byzantine eras. Also unearthed were the TOWER OF DAVID remains of a lovely Byzantine shrine with an elaborate mosaic floor that was incorporated into the church. The Garden of Gethsemane lies at the foot of the Mount of Olives. Today it appears much as it did 20 centuries ago and contains some of the world s oldest olive trees. The garden was a spot favored by Jesus for meditation and prayer. Originally built in 379, the Church of Gethsemane was rebuilt in 1919 1924. Long considered one of the most beautiful churches in Jerusalem, it was called the Church of All Nations because 16 nations contributed to its construction. Drive to the Old City and pass through Stephen s Gate into the Christian Quarter. Here is the Pool of Bethesda, where Jesus healed the blind man and perhaps the finest example of Crusader architecture in Israel, St. Anne s Church, which possesses amazing acoustics. Walk the Way of the Cross (Via Dolorosa) to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. In 325, Constantine s mother Helen first requisitioned the area for a church. This 4thcentury building was largely destroyed by the Turks in 1009 and partially restored in 1048. The impressive stone decorations adorning the facade date from Crusader times. In its current form, the church preserves the Crusader structure and is shared by two major Christian denominations, the Greek Orthodox and the Roman Catholic. The church enshrines a tomb that some traditions hold to be the place of Jesus burial and resurrection. GETHSEMANE
DEAD SEA SHRINE OF THE BOOK MASADA SATURDAY, JUNE 1 - JERUSALEM (B,D) Drive east from Jerusalem to the lowest place on earth, the Dead Sea. See Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found in 1947. Continue to Masada, a natural fortress with majestic ruins overlooking the Dead Sea. Take a cable car to the top of the plateau for a tour. Jewish zealots held the rock against the unrelenting 10th Roman legion for several months in 72 AD. The Romans finally took the fortress by way of a massive attack ramp that they built. The camps and other fortifications that encircle the mesa constitute the most complete Roman siege works to have survived to the present day. From Masada, drive to the Dead Sea for a float in the water. Return to Jerusalem for dinner and overnight. SUNDAY, JUNE 2 - JERUSALEM (B,D) Visit the City of David to see the excavations of the oldest part of Jerusalem, dating back to King David. If weather permits, walk through Hezekiah s Tunnel. At Mt. Zion, visit King David s Tomb and the Last Supper Room. Then, enter the Jewish quarter of the Old City through the Zion Gate for a walking tour. Walk down to the Western Wall, the holiest site in Judaism and the only visible remains of Herod s splendid Second Temple, where Jesus walked and taught. See the Temple Steps, the original steps leading to the Temple s Entrance to the Court of the Israelites. At the Davidson Center, watch the multi-media presentation THE WESTERN WALL & TEMPLE MOUNT about Jerusalem in the days of Jesus. Walk through the Western Wall Tunnel, huge arched spaces just north of the Western Wall, which link to a water tunnel cut through the rock to the north, apparently dug in the Hasmonean period (163 to 37 BC). Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight. MONDAY, JUNE 3 - JERUSALEM (B,D) Visit the Israel Museum and the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition at the Shrine of the Book. See the scale model of Jerusalem as it was in the days of Jesus. Continue to Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial. May we never forget the terrible price Israel paid to establish her country. Tour the museum and meet a local cantor for a service in memory of the 6,000,000 Jews murdered by the Nazis. We will end our pilgrimage at the Garden Tomb, held by many Protestant denominations to be the location of the burial and resurrection of Jesus. We will have some time for prayer and meditation and Holy Communion.
