What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about Some Preliminary Considerations: 1. How do we define tragedy? a lamentable, dreadful, or fatal event or affair; calamity; disaster Why do we call something a disaster or a dreadful, or fatal event?

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about Some Preliminary Considerations: 1. How do we define tragedy? Why do we call something a disaster or a dreadful, or fatal event? It may be something over which we had NO CONTROL. It might be something we brought upon ourselves. It might be an event others brought on us.

Boykin writes: Our life is made up by the choices we make. He critiques the viewpoint that suggests we are victims in decision-making. My favorite absurdity comes from a renowned historian who, describing the origins of World War I, wrote that `planning for war assumed its own momentum until 1914, military expediency dominated the decision-making process, and war declared itself.!

Whatever happens is the direct result of decisions people make and things people do. Decisions affecting your circumstances are not necessarily all made by you, by anyone available for you to argue with, by anyone recently, or by any one person alone but they are all made by people. And groups of people are nothing but people, whether they are a congress, a mob, or a refreshments committee. Sometimes OTHERS bring tragedy into our lives by choices that they make. And FORGIVENESS needs to be a part of our dealing with tragedy.

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about Some Preliminary Considerations: 1. How do we define tragedy? Why do we call something a disaster or a dreadful, or fatal event? If God is not in charge, if things/tragedies happen without His knowledge, we are, indeed, doomed to despair! But what if He knows all things?

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about Some Preliminary Considerations: 1. How do we define tragedy? Why do we call something a disaster or a dreadful, or fatal event? What if even the tragedies of life are allowed to come into our experience for HIS purposes?

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about Some Preliminary Considerations: 2. How do we respond to tragedy? Some respond to tragedy by denying God, by accusing Him of being unfair or unloving. But where do we get our ideas of fair and loving?

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about Some Preliminary Considerations: 2. How do we respond to tragedy? Some think that evil and tragedy are not real, that we are not real, that the universe is an illusion.

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about Some Preliminary Considerations: 2. How do we respond to tragedy? Some actually believe that if there is a God, He must be both good and evil to allow terrible things to happen to His creation. But what if He gave a measure of free will to His creation?

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about Some Preliminary Considerations: 3. What tragedy in your life or experience immediately comes to your mind? Put a symbol of your tragedy down in your bulletin. It might be the loss of a job, the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage, the shattering of a dream you once had...

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about Some Preliminary Considerations: 3. What tragedy in your life or experience immediately comes to your mind? Tomorrow, Feb. 20th, is the 20th anniversary of our son s terrible car accident. God spared his life but it was a very difficult time for our family.

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about What Does the Bible Say about Tragedies? 10 Moses said to the Lord, Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue. 11 The Lord said to him, Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say. (Ex. 4)

Such tragedies do not take God by surprise. 4. God can use us despite our disabilities.

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? My favorite story of 3 Neither this man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. a tragedy is found in John 9... 6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man s eyes. 7 Go, he told him, wash in the Pool of Siloam (this word means Sent ). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. (John 9)

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about I want to work my way through this chapter to see how God can use tragedy in our lives.

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about I. Before the Healing (vv. 1-6) Multiple-Choice Questions 3 Neither this man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

3 Neither this man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. How do you mess up being a display case? Dirty? Cluttered? No light? Not accessible?

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about I. Before the Healing (vv. 1-6) 3 Neither this man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about I. Before the Healing (vv. 1-6) II. After the Healing (vv. 7-41) A. Neighbors and others interview him (vv. 7-12)

ἐκεῖνος ἔλεγεν ὅτι Ἐγώ εἰμι. I am the man!

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about I. Before the Healing (vv. 1-6) II. After the Healing (vv. 7-41) A. Neighbors and others interview him (vv. 7-12) B. The Pharisees interrogate him (vv. 13-34)

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about II. After the Healing (vv. 7-41) B. The Pharisees interrogate him (vv. 13-34) 1. The issue (v. 14) 2. The assumption (v. 16) 3. Grill the parents (vv. 18-23) 4. You re under oath! (vv. 24-25) 5. Excommunication! (vv. 26-34)

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about II. After the Healing (vv. 7-41) B. The Pharisees interrogate him (vv. 13-34) C. Jesus Leads Him to Saving Faith (vv. 35-38) What s more important than physical sight? Getting forgiveness with GOD!

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about II. After the Healing (vv. 7-41) B. The Pharisees interrogate him (vv. 13-34) C. Jesus Leads Him to Saving Faith (vv. 35-38) D. True Blindness (vv. 39-41)

What Do Jesus- Followers Believe about So, how does this help us? 1. Look at your particular tragedy as sovereignly allowed by a loving God. 2. Recognize that He has a purpose in your tragedy (which He may not explain to you). 3. Be ready to be a display case for the works of God in your life.
