WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Trinity Lutheran Church Combined Worship Service June 22, 2014-10:00 am Second Sunday of Pentecost CALL TO WORSHIP: Read Psalm 86:1-10,16,17 We place our trust in God.. who hears even our unspoken cries for help. We gather here today knowing of God s goodness and mercy; rejoicing in God s steadfast love which surrounds us. God s greatness is evident in creation of which we are a part. Let all nations bow down and glorify God. For God is great and does wondrous things. May our lives bear witness to God s loving kindness. Let us worship God. GATHERING SONG Come, All You People ELW #819 PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace, you warn us today that you have not come to bring peace, but a sword. Forgive us for believing in 'peace at any price', forgetting that the cost of peace for you was a life spent challenging and defeating the power of evil and sin. Pierce our weakness with your strength and give us courage to confront behavior which is contrary to all you teach us. Strip away all that prevents us from exercising faith and courage in the face of injustice. Penetrate the defenses we erect around ourselves and help us offer the gift of vulnerability to others. Cut through our efforts to protect ourselves at the expense of the wellbeing and peace of mind of others. Expose the fearfulness that shapes much of our decision making and replace it with the courage of your convictions. Lord Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace, give us your strength we pray. Empower us with your Spirit to be bearers of love and peace and reconciliation, So that we can follow wherever you lead us. Amen. 1

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS Jesus died and rose again so that we might experience "newness of life so we can consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Jesus Christ". (Romans 6: 4b,11) The good news therefore is this: in Jesus Christ our sins are forgiven. Thanks be to God! PRAYER OF PRAISE AND ADORATION We praise and adore you, O God, for doing wondrous things in our lives - for loving and forgiving us. Even when we become distracted by the events of our daily existence, we are aware of your divine activity in our lives, prompting us to deepen our trust in you. Your desire for us to live full and abundant lives has been realized in and through Jesus, your most wondrous gift of all. He is surely the everlasting sign of your steadfast love towards us, and all people. He is the assurance that we are known intimately and valued by you in ways beyond our human understanding. May our praise and adoration for such goodness towards us be visible, as we respond to Jesus' appeal to take up our cross and follow him. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen CHILDREN S TIME Shivon Miller, Minister of Congregational Life SONG Creation Psalm Oh Lord, how wondrous are your creations; O Lord, in wisdom, how you have made them. They look to you to clothe them and feed them, all things are ready just when they need them. You hide your face and we know confusion; you take our breath and we re an illusion. You send your Spirit to recreate us, the Holy Spirit to celebrate us. Glory to you, Lord God of creation. Glory to you, Lord God of salvation. Glory to you, Lord, Spirit of Power. Send us your peace like a gentle shower. CCLI # 1330601 EPISTLE READING: Romans 6: 1b-11 6What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For whoever has died is freed from sin. 8 But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 The death he 2

died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. GOSPEL READING: Matthew 10: 24-39 24 A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; 25 it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household! 26 So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. 27 What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. 28 Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 And even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31 So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; 33 but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven. 34 Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and one s foes will be members of one s own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. SERMON Shivon Miller, Minister of Congregational Life SONG Take Up Your Cross Marciniak/Evavold Verse 1: Chorus: Verse 2: Verse 3: Take up your cross Je-sus said. Don t let pride get in the way. Humble yourself, listen to him say: Come and follow me today. (Chorus) So take up your cross - He says to us today. I ll be with to show you the way. In order to live - The way life was meant to be Just take up your cross and follow me. (Chorus) Take up your cross Je-sus said. If your self you would find. Give up your life, lose yourself in me. Follow for you have been set free. (Chorus) I gave myself to you, give yourself to me. Don t forget, You have been set free. I died and rose again just as I said, You will rise up from the dead. (Chorus) 3

CONFESSION OF FAITH: THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. OFFERING SONG Getting Comes Through Giving Help us, Lord, to hear the way Your Word appears. Help us, Lord, to see the truth that sets us free Chorus Getting comes through giving. Winning comes through losing Life comes out of dying. Happiness of crying. Getting comes through giving this I know. We can t find our way. We need to hear you say through what you command Help us understand. The world can t understand what it is you ve planned. In Your word we ve found You ve turned it upside down. CCLI # 1330601 OFFERTORY PRAYER Holy God, as you strengthened Jesus to walk the way of the cross, strengthen us to be Jesus' faithful followers, with his selfless love shaping all our actions. May these gifts and our lives, which we offer in response to your love and mercy, be used to proclaim our faith in Christ crucified and risen. Amen 4

PRAYER SONG Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God 1. Seek ye... First the kingdom of God and its righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Allelu, alleluia. 2. Ask and it shall be given unto you; seek and you shall find; knock and the door shall be opened unto you. Allelu, alleluia. 3. We do not live by bread alone, but by ev ry word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Allelu, alleluia. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, And the power, and the glory, Forever and ever. Amen. BENEDICTION May the steadfast love of God surround you; The vulnerable love of Jesus Christ inspire you; The penetrating power of the Holy Spirit surprise you. CCLI # 1330601 5

SENDING SONG To Live On Chorus: Verse 1: Verse 2: To live on in grace and wonder. To reach out and to love each other. To live on. To live on. To live on. We don t always know where we re going. We don t always know what to believe. But we stand inside this hope of freedom, Holding to the faith we have received. (Chorus) Some days we are in life s dark valleys. Some day we are on life s mountain tops. Ev rywhere we go in all creation, We walk in the promises of God. God who made us, claims and saves us, lead us in your love. (Chorus) DISMISSAL Go in peace, serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. CCLI# 1330601 6

It can even get us in trouble. From childhood on, we know this to be true: Not giving in to peer pressure to bully a weaker kid can make us a target of bullying ourselves. Things don't change all that much when we grow up. Passion for peace is hard to cultivate when conflict and resentment loom large. Remembering the poor is less fashionable than obsession over celebrity. Mentioning God is frowned upon in the public square. Fairness and generosity are easily pushed aside in a tough market. Wouldn't it be a relief not to have to struggle against that stream? How easy it would be to just drift along. In daily life we learn to keep our heads down and fall into line. Even when we hear Christ's challenging call to love radically, fear, habit, and exhaustion stifle us. We want to follow faithfully, but sometimes it can seem as if everything around us is conspiring to make it harder. Who has the time? Who has the energy? Who has the courage? On our own, maybe none of us does. But we are not alone. Fed at God's table and supported by God's community of sinner-saints, we are strong enough to resist the tide of convenience and heartlessness with imagination and compassion. Called by Christ and marked with the cross, we are made new at every moment and free to make choices apart from social pressure. We can speak out and risk offending, risk being unpopular, risk being opposed. We have nothing to fear, because the waters of baptism flow upstream, back to the Source. But, they could use some more rhubarb. If you have some rhubarb to share, please bring the cleaned stalks to the office on Monday or before 9 am on Tuesday. Also, if you have time, it would be very much appreciated if you would clean and chop the rhubarb and put it into quart plastic bags for the ladies. Thank you very much for your help. Great news! As of Thursday, due to a generous match, we have raised $1,110. 00 for the Gabriel Fund through the Grandma's Marathon Fundraiser. Gloria Dei has raised $1,085.00. The contest closed Saturday at noon. The Gabriel Fund is a CHUM project that specifically assists families in the Central Hillside - Trinity and Gloria Dei's neighborhood. We are in competition with Gloria Dei to raise the most funds. At stake is the Oasis Cup, which we currently possess due to last year's victory. If you want to support this noble cause and haven't yet...sign up in the narthex area to pledge a runner. Make checks payable to Trinity and write "Gabriel" on the Memo line. Note: CHUM is not running their usual Fitger s water stop, so we are not recruiting any volunteers this year. 8
