ASENSION LUTHERAN HURH THE LUTHERAN HURH MISSOURI SYNOD LITTLETON, OLORADO February 12, 2016 10:30 am repare to be changed! Each time God s people gather for worship, change occurs. As we hear the Gospel proclaimed and celebrate the Lord s Supper, we are renewed and become strengthened, supported, and fed. God changes us as the Holy Spirit works in and among us. There are changes happening now and changes yet to come. In this green season of the hurch Year, we have special opportunities to thank God for the continuing growth that He graciously grants us. SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EIHANY

GATHERING SONGS SURELY THE RESENE Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place, I can feel His mighty power and His grace. I can hear the brush of angel s wings, I see glory on each face; Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place. Wolfe SING TO THE KING Sing to the King who is coming to reign. Glory to Jesus, the Lamb that was slain. Life and salvation His empire shall bring, and joy to the nations, when jesus is King. ome, let us sing a song, a song declaring that we belong to Jesus; He is all we need. Lift up a heart of praise. Sing now with voices raised to Jesus; sing to the King. For His returning we watch and we pray; We will be ready the dawn of that day. We ll join in singing with all the redeemed, cause Satan is vanquished and Jesus is King. ome, let us sing a song, a song declaring that we belong to Jesus; He is all we need. Lift up a heart of praise. Sing now with voices raised to Jesus; sing to the King. astoral Greeting Divine Service ASTOR GINKEL Opening Song Shout to the North Smith Men of faith, rise up and sing of the great and glorious King. You are strong when you feel weak, in your brokenness complete. Shout to the north and the south; Sing to the East and the West. Jesus is savior to all, Lord of heaven and earth. Rise up, women of the truth, stand and sing to broken hearts. Who can know the healing pow r of our awesome King of love. Shout to the north and the south; Sing to the East and the West. Jesus is savior to all, Lord of heaven and earth. Rise up, hurch with broken wings, fill this place with songs again Of our God who reigns on high, by His grace again we ll fly. Shout to the north and the south; Sing to the East and the West. Jesus is savior to all, Lord of heaven and earth.

INVOATION AND OENING SENTENES In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Do you not know that you are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you? Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. ONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION When the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy. Let us go to Him, confident that He will grant us forgiveness for Jesus sake. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination Heavenly Father, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have failed to exhibit goodness, the fruit of Your Holy Spirit, in our thinking, speaking, and acting. We have not always chosen life, loving the Lord our God, obeyed His voice, and held fast to Him. We have not always sought to be reconciled to our brothers. Our Lord Jesus revealed His person and ministry through His words and actions. In Your great mercy, forgive, renew, and lead us so that we may be revealed as His faith-filled followers to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of hrist, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. rayer of the Day Let us pray. Heavenly Father, when You brought us to faith, we were changed for time and eternity. Until that day when we see You face-to-face, forgive us daily, continue to change us into Your likeness, and give us growth in grace and faith; through Your Son, Jesus hrist, our Lord. Amen.

SERVIE OF THE WORD Old Testament: Deuteronomy 30:15-20 See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. L The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Epistle: 1 orinthians 3:1-9 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly--mere infants in hrist. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? For when one says, "I follow aul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere men? What, after all, is Apollos? And what is aul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe--as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building. L The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

ongregation, please stand. The Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:21-37 The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the fifth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, `Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, `Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, `You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. "Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. "You have heard that it was said, `Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. "It has been said, `Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.' But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery. "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, `Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your `Yes' be `Yes,' and your `No,' `No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. Sermon Loving Enough to Be Hurt ASTOR GINKEL Text: 1 orinthians 13:5 NIENE REED LSB (Inside back-cover) RAYER OF THE HURH Let us pray for God s people around the world and all who call out to Him in their various needs. Sovereign God, when people anywhere are in conflict, are driven by hate, or are living in countries with cruel taskmasters or brutal regimes, surround them with Your love. Use us to bring word of Your compassionate embrace so that they may endure until relief is realized. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer and grant us Your love. Lord Jesus, we pray for all who face this day in sadness or grief, are facing sudden crisis or long-term ill, or are mourning the loss of a loved one. [We remember especially...] Restore joy to them through those who care about them professionals, family, and friends all who know the joy of Your gracious presence. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer and grant us Your joy. O Holy Spirit, open doors of opportunity for people of peace so that nations will not raise up sword against one another, societies may be ordered for the good of all, and Your kingdom of grace may be extended without persecution. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer and grant us Your peace. Father in heaven, give patience to all who make, administer, and adjudicate the laws of the nations. Grant them willing ears and calm hearts to make decisions that will benefit the lives of all their citizens. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer and grant us Your patience. Gracious Lord, whose kindness knows no end, bring to repentance all who have turned from Your way. Use people of faith to bring Your Word to them that they may hear anew the precious Gospel of Your Son. Grant to us the wisdom to know when to speak and what to say. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer and grant us Your kindness.

Enlivening Spirit, Jesus revealed His person and ministry during His time on earth. Now shine Your goodness through us who worship here and those who gather around Your Word and Sacraments worldwide so that we may be seen as His adopted brothers and sisters. Strengthen us to carry on His work at home, at work, or in school to the glory of Your holy name. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer and grant us Your goodness. Lord over all, grant faithfulness in their calling to all who raise and distribute food, all who guard and protect their neighborhoods and nations, all who tend the sick and wounded, and all who build homes and manage businesses. May their efforts benefit the entire society in which they live. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer and grant us Your faith and faithfulness. Loving Lord, help us to act in gentleness toward the forgotten in society, the invisible poor, the forgotten in prison, those about to be born, and those nearing their end of days. Open our eyes to opportunities to serve their needs in Your name. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer and grant us Your gentleness. Triune God, guide the leaders of the hurch around the world so that they may exercise self-control over their momentary emotions and personal desires, keeping their eyes always fixed on You, the source of life and health and peace, and keeping their ears attentive to Your gracious Word. Lord in Your mercy, hear our prayer and grant us Your self-control. These and any other things You would have us ask of You, heavenly Father, grant to us for the sake of Your Son, Jesus hrist, our Lord. Amen. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus hrist, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: The Words of onsecration Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of pow r and might! Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. The Lord s rayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
