EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST July 30, 2017 11:00 AS WE GATHER One of the great ironies of our contemporary world is that people can live in close proximity to one another in large cities and yet feel alone. Surrounded by others, many people experience loneliness. Feeling alone can happen because of a broken relationship, a chronic illness, or the death of someone near and dear. Today s Readings remind us that God is present for us in the midst of our loneliness. You are a people holy to the LORD your God, we hear in Deuteronomy, chosen... to be a people for His treasured possession. When Paul poses the question in Romans 8, Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? the answer is no one. Nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord. We gather at the altar today to receive Christ s body and blood, and He is present with us when we do so. To a lonely world, and to our lonely times, today s Readings shout, You are not alone. Jesus is Immanuel, that is, God with us. And no trouble, distress, violence, or persecution can overcome God s present love for us in Jesus Christ. PRE-SERVICE Majesty Hayford BOB 154 CHORUS: Majesty, worship His majesty. Unto Jesus be all glory, honor, and praise. Majesty, kingdom authority. Flow from His throne unto His own; His anthem raise. So exalt, lift up on high the name of Jesus. Magnify, come glorify Christ Jesus the King. Majesty, worship His majesty Jesus who died, now glorified, King of all kings. REPEAT SONG Jesus who died, now glorified, King of all kings. WELCOME PREPARATION OPENING SONG Seek Ye First Lafferty AGPS 207 Seek ye first the kingdom of God, And His righteousness. And all these things shall be added unto you! Allelu, alleluia! Ask and it shall be given unto you, Seek and ye shall find, Knock and the door shall be opened unto you, Allelu, alleluia! Man does not live by bread alone, But by ev ry word That proceeds from the mouth of the Lord, Allelu, alleluia! Allelu, alleluia! OPENING SENTENCES Rejoice always. pray without ceasing give thanks in all circumstances for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 1

INVOCATION AND CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (OR) Seminary Student: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. John 1:12, Philippians 1:6 SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY SERVICE OF THE WORD The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. You treasure us, O Lord, and You steadfastly love Your chosen people. In the midst of even the worst things that can happen to us, we are more than conquerors through the love of Jesus. Help us to know the peace that Your presence brings in the midst of our troubles, and guide us toward the kingdom You promised; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 2

(Please Be Seated) OLD TESTAMENT Deuteronomy 7:6 9 (Chosen to be a treasured possession) 6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. 7 It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Romans 8:28 39 (Nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God in Jesus.) 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died more than that, who was raised who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 13:44 52 (Parables describing the kingdom of God) The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the thirteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 44 The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 51 Have you understood all these things? They said to him, Yes. 52 And he said to them, Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old. 3

This is the Gospel of Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. APOSTLES CREED LSB 207 I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. THE LORD S PRAYER AND ITS MEANING And lead us not into temptation. What does this mean? God tempts no one. We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice. Although we are attacked by these things, we pray that we may finally overcome them and win the victory. (Please Be Seated) CHILDREN S MESSAGE What a Friend We Have in Jesus LSB 770, v. 1 What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Ev ry thing to God in prayer! Oh, what a peace we often forfeit; Oh, what needless pain we bear - All because we do not carry Ev ry thing to God in prayer! SONG THE DAY One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails) Johnson, Gifford, Riddle Higher than the mountains that I face, stronger than the power of the grave. Constant in the trial and the change. One thing remains. Your love never fails, It never gives up never runs out on me. SING 3X Your love. On and on and on and on it goes. It overwhelms and satisfies my soul. And I never ever have to be afraid. One thing remains. One thing remains. 4

Your love never fails, It never gives up never runs out on me. SING 3X Your love. In death, in life, I'm confident and cover'd by the power of Your great love. My debt is paid; There's nothing that can separate my heart from Your great love. REPEAT BRIDGE Your love never fails, It never gives up never runs out on me. SING 3X Your love. SERMON PRAYER OF THE CHURCH O Lord, Your steadfast love sustains the Church throughout the world. Strengthen the Church wherever two or three are gathered in Your name. Guide the Church into all truth. Empower our proclamation of the Gospel, so that the world may know the joy of Your kingdom. Bless the work of missionaries and church leaders. Enable all congregations of our Synod to be sources of God s love and redemption to the people in the communities in which they live. God of steadfast love, hear our prayer. You promise that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Guide the rulers of our nation and of all the nations of the world toward justice, wisdom, mercy, and peace. Watch over our military personnel, [especially...] and make Your comforting presence known to their families. Protect innocent people in war-torn nations. Preserve us from acts of terrorism. Reconcile us with our enemies. God of steadfast love, hear our prayer. You work all things together for good for those who love You. Let Your love sustain and encourage those who are facing health troubles, [including...]. Bless those who are in danger, those who are feeling lonely or depressed, and those who feel separated from You. Help them to see that even in the midst of suffering, You are there, and that nothing in all creation can separate them from Your love for us in Christ Jesus. God of steadfast love, hear our prayer. (Special Petitions) Christ Jesus, the one who died and rose, is interceding for us. We boldly entrust our prayers to You, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. (Please Be Seated) 5

GATHERING OF OFFERINGS The King of Glory Jabusch AGPS 227 REFRAIN: The King of Glory comes, the nation rejoices; Open the gates before Him, lift up your voices. Who is the King of Glory; how shall we call Him? He is Emmanuel, the Promised of ages. REFRAIN In all of Galilee, in city or village, He goes among His people curing their illness. REFRAIN Sing then of David s son, our Savior, and Brother; In all of Galilee was never another. REFRAIN He gave His life for us, the Lamb of salvation, He took upon Himself the sins of the nation. REFRAIN He conquered sin and death, He truly has risen, And He will share with us His heavenly vision. REFRAIN SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT The Lord s Supper is celebrated at Ascension in the confession that, as He says, our Lord gives not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. All those who are not yet instructed, in doubt or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the Sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor. PREFACE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who brings treasures old and new to us through His death and resurrection, so that we love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: 6
