Transcription:

Peachtree Road United Methodist Church April 22, 2012 The Third Sunday of Easter The Easter Season, also known as the Great Fifty Days, begins at sunset Easter Eve and continues through the Day of Pentecost. It is the most joyous and celebrative season of the Christian year, focusing on Christ s resurrection and ascension and on the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the first Easter and the Day of Pentecost. The colors white and gold and materials of the finest texture are traditional for paraments, stoles, and banners, symbolizing purity and joy. - Adapted from the United Methodist Book of Worship, published by The United Methodist Publishing House, Nashville, Tennessee, 1992. The Choral Introit René Clausen (b. 1953) All that hath life and breath praise ye the Lord. Shout to the Lord, alleluia! Praise Him! Alleluia! Praise and Thanksgiving At the Procession,* Hymn 154 All Hail the Power of Jesus Name Coronation Invocation* Affirmation of Faith* The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Gloria Patri* Charles Meineke Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. ** The people are seated. Sacrament of Christian Baptism Response: With God s help we will so order our lives after the example of Christ, that this child (these children,) surrounded by steadfast love, may be established in the faith and confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to life eternal.

Prayer of Dedication Hymn Tune: Stuttgart Child of blessing, child of promise, baptized with the Spirit s sign; with this water God has sealed you unto love and grace divine. Children s Moments with the Minister Hymn 147 All Things Bright and Beautiful Royal Oak (stanza one) All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all. Each little flower that opens, each little bird that sings, God made their glowing colors, and made their tiny wings. Amen. The Lesson Philippians 3:12-16 following the reading Minister The Word of God for the people of God. People Thanks be to God! Sermon The Joy of The Journey Don Harp Ministry of Music Ten thousand joys Don Marsh (Twentieth Century) Stand here beside the manger, looking at this little stranger, wond ring if He ll be like other boys; looking down across tomorrow knowing there will be some sorrow; I still know He ll bring ten thousand joys. Ten thousand joys, sweet Son of God, You came to me. And my heart sings because I know that you are mine, in You I find ten thousand joys. Enough to last through all the years: And joy to shine through all my tears. When I am alone with Jesus, in the quiet, where no one sees us, or when He is with me in life s noise; if I speak, I know He ll hear me, and to know that He is near me always brings me ten thousand joys. I know he came from God to save us from our sins and that He came to set His people free, but how was I to know when Jesus came into my life that God s own Son had come to bring to me ten thousand joys. Karen Dean (Twentieth Century) Amy Little and Paul Sewell, soloists Response to the word Invitation to Christian Discipleship At the Invitation,* Hymn 733 Marching to Zion Robert Lowry, 1867 sending forth Benediction* Peace* Minister People The peace of the Lord be always with you.
