STORYTELLER (Show Bible Story slide.) Hi, friends! (holds up Bible) Do you know what we call this book? (allows for responses) Yes, the Bible. Have you ever had a problem and you didn t know what to do? (allows for responses) The Bible helps us know what to do. Thumbs up if you are ready to hear a true story from the Bible today. (allows for responses) Great! One day, Jesus went to the town where He grew up. The town was called Nazareth. Let s practice saying Nazareth. (repeats with kids a few times) While Jesus was in Nazareth, He went to church. Jesus stood up to read the Bible to all the people who were there. This Bible looked different. (holds up Bible) It didn t look like a book. (holds up paper scroll) It actually looked like paper that was rolled up. This is called a scroll. Jesus took the scroll and He unrolled it. Can you unroll a scroll? (demonstrates for kids) What was inside the scroll? (allows for responses) God s Word was inside the scroll. That is just like our Bible today! Jesus read God s Word out loud to the people in the church. Jesus read from what we now call the Book of Isaiah. Isaiah was a prophet who heard messages from God. Jesus read the message that Isaiah heard from God. (Open Bible; read Luke 4:18-19) The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. When Jesus was done, He rolled up the scroll, gave it to a church helper, and sat down. Everyone watched Jesus. Jesus looked up at the people and said, These words are about Me. The people were surprised at what Jesus said. (Show Christ Focus slide.) Jesus was the one who God had sent to set His people free. God tells us about His Son, Jesus, in the Bible. It is so important to listen to what the Bible says. The Bible teaches about Jesus, and the Bible helps people know what to do. Let s say that together: The Bible helps people know what to do. Let s give thanks to God for the Bible. Will you pray with me? God, thank You for the Bible. Thank You that the Bible is a true Word from You. Thank You that the Bible tells us about Jesus. I pray that we will always listen to Your Word. Your Word tells us what to do. Thank You! Amen. FOR LIFE PRESCHOOL 9

p HUDDLE UPS (OPTIONAL) This time is designed for churches that have a pick-up time from a large room as parents arrive. It s a great time for follow-up conversations and questions from small group leaders about the session s content. You also can use the missions emphasis (below). (Print the following for your small group leaders.) What did Jesus read? (the scroll) What was in the scroll? (God s Word, just like our Bible) MISSIONS EMPHASIS (OPTIONAL) Prior to the session, draw a large cross on a sheet of paper and make copies (1 per child). Gather various art supplies for kids to use to decorate their crosses. Review some of the facts kids have learned about the Songhai people. Tell the follow-up story A Gospel Portrait. Discuss how volunteers used art to tell about Jesus. Distribute copies of the large cross. Guide kids to color the cross or decorate it using the provided supplies. Encourage kids to give their crosses to someone who needs to know Jesus. Missions Story: A Gospel Portrait Amy Walters, a member of Living Hope Baptist Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky, traveled to Niger (nih-zheer) with her church. They went to witness to and disciple the Songhai (SONG-hi) people of West Africa. Most of the Songhai people have never heard the name Jesus. Amy and some women from her church spent a week doing art projects with the women of the village. The Songhai women were able to develop a new skill and sell their projects in the market to get money for food. The women painted on canvases and crosses while Amy and her friends helped the women with their art. Amy and her friends also shared stories from the Bible and told the Songhai women about Jesus. Missionaries are needed in America, also. Do you have any friends who need to know about Jesus? You can be like Amy. Invite your friends over to paint canvases or build race cars while you tell them stories from the Bible and about Jesus. You also could have a painting party for your Sunday School class and spend time popcorn praying for the Songhai people in Niger. Wherever you are and whatever you enjoy doing, you can always share the good news of Jesus with people. FOR LIFE PRESCHOOL 14
