NEWS FROM THE NEST November 2012-Edition 3 5905 E. 130 TH AVE. TAMPA, FLORIDA 33617 www.ayatampa.org (813) 987-9282 A Message from Br. Souheil Insha'Allah, this message finds you in the best state of health and eman. This month was certainly a busy one. Our Elementary and 6 th Grade students embarked on the yearly Science Fair (now called STEM Fair for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) odyssey. It was a pleasure for me to see the parents who came to the Science Evening event we had last month. Many interesting questions were asked and great suggestions were taken into consideration for future STEM Fairs at AYA. I am particularly excited to see the final projects and to chat with students about their experience throughout the process. Insha'Allah, parents will have a chance to interact with their children while working on the projects. I am certain that the time parents spend with their children discussing and planning the STEM project is priceless! Wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah. The 2012-2013 Yearbook Class would like to thank all those who participated in the Cover Contest. AYA s artists and graphic designers did a wonderful job showing their school spirit through their designs. 1 st Place: Hakim Zekri, 5A (not shown below-design will be displayed on Yearbook) 2 nd Place: Tied- Maysa Khaled, 9A and Amarah Khan, 9B 3 rd Place: Iman Ahmad, 8B December events 6-Thursday: IPTA Meeting 6-Thursday: Environmental Conference for Eco Club 7-Friday: Penny Drive Deadline 10-14: Book Fair 10-21: Student Council Food Drive 13-Thursday: Pre-K SOTM Assembly 14-Friday: SOTM/SOTQ, Honor Roll Assembly 21-Tarbiyah 24-Jan 1: NO SCHOOL- Winter Holiday Jan 2: School Resumes Look inside... NEWS FROM THE NEST NOVEMBER 2012 4 Grade Mock Election by Fatima Bouarfa, 8B Sr. Nareman, why did you decide to host this event? - In our class, we were talking about the elections and how someone can become president of the US. Normally, this chapter comes later in the year, but because the US was getting ready for its 2012 election, we discussed it earlier. So, the mock election was a way students could witness the process firsthand. Why is it so important to include AYA students in this process/event? - I wanted students to be able to understand the current events that were taking place. I also wanted them to be able to explain the electoral process with others, like their parents. Student questions: 1.How did you come up with your platform? 2.How did you feel when you were debating in front of all those people? Lana: 1. My party members and I wrote down our thoughts about the important issues in the US. 2. I felt nervous, but after a while I felt good. Sarah: 1. My party helped me put all the ideas together, and then I organized them. Yeah 2. It was normal, because I m the loudest in the class, so yeah, it was fine. Mohammed: 1. I got some of my ideas from Obama. I did that because his platform really inspired and motivated me and it met my requirements. 2. I was nervous, yet confident in my answers, and I was trying to deliver the message as much as possible.
