Page 3 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish May 14, 2017 Dear Friends: A Letter From the Pastor s Desk We've been blessed during the past year to have the assistance of Father Manny, living with us while he earns his graduate degree from Fordham University. Father Manny is going to take a break this summer and head home to the Philippines to visit with his family and friends. We wish him a great visit. In his place, Father Andiy will be visiting from the Philippines. You'll remember that Father Andiy, a professor at the seminary in his diocese and a Pastor, has been with us before. We're grateful for his return to Our Lady of Lourdes. He'll be assisting us from June 27th through August 7th. Please make him welcome once again. In other news, you know that the Chapel is closed for several weeks while repairs and renovations are accomplished. Among the improvements: new carpeting for the Chapel, a sanding down and cleaning of the pews, and the creation of a new shrine in what was Father Mason's confessional. This Shrine will have as its centerpiece a statue of St. John Vianney, a saint of particular importance to parish priests everywhere. It will also include a portrait of Father Mason. We'll also be adding some amplification so that the priests and readers can be better heard at Mass and services there. We're hopeful that these improvements and additions will only enhance worship in this beautiful chapel setting. Thanks for your patience. If you have time on Saturday, May 20th, please think of joining us at 7:30 p.m. to hear a wonderful speaker, Robert Palasciano. Robert will be with us to share his story of a near death experience, and to reveal what he saw on the other side of life. It should be an evening you will treasure and remember. Please be there. Last weekend we had our parish celebration of First Communion for our second grade Religious Education program students. This is an exciting and uplifting time for these young people and their families. Please keep these beautiful children in your special prayers. Finally, after many years of dedicated service to our parish, Bernadette Schaefer, our Director of Religious Education is moving on to another important service to the Church. The domestic Church! As her family has grown and grandchildren have now become a large part of Bernadette's life, she's decided to retire and dedicate herself to their care. These are fortunate grandchildren. We will miss her as our Director, but are very grateful for her prayerful, generous, and loving service at Our Lady of Lourdes. Please keep Bernadette and her family in your good prayers. We'll begin the search for a new director now, and Bernadette will continue to help us until a new director is found. Have a peace-filled week. In the Love of Christ, Msgr. Jim Lisante Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor PS: On behalf of all the priests and staff of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, I want to extend a warm and loving thanks to all of the Mothers and Grandmothers of our parish this Mother's Day. While not strictly a religious holiday, this secular observance has very real spiritual meaning in celebrating the life-affirming vocation of Moms everywhere. Know that we'll be praying for all Mothers, living and deceased, in our Masses this weekend and throughout the week. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Page 10 Our Lady of Lourdes Parish May 14, 2017 Happy Mother s Day! We honor and thank all mothers, living and deceased, for their gift of life. We remember and appreciate all the sacrifices they have made, and continue to make, out of love, to care and provide for us. Often, we don't realize until we are parents ourselves, how much our mothers sacrificed for us. Today, we say, "Thank you, with love, for everything you have done for us!" We also remember and pray for those mothers who are facing a crisis pregnancy. May God guide them to choose life, and may we, as followers of Christ, provide for these women in their time of need. "The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral - a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby's body...the angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God's creative miracle to bring new saints to heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation. What on God's good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother?" (Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty) Prayer for Mothers: All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for mothers young and old. We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; may they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy. We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us; may they continue to guide in strong and gentle ways. We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict; may they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes every tear away. We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion. We remember mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen. Spiritual Adoption: Make a personal commitment to pray daily for one unborn child who is in danger of being aborted. You are asked to spiritually adopt one unknown baby and pray that this child be carried to term and experience the fullness of life as God intended. Daily prayer: "Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion. (Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen) Hope and Healing after Abortion: The Sisters of Life host monthly Days of Prayer & Healing, Gatherings, and Hope & Healing Weekend Retreats. They include witnesses of mercy, Scripture sharing, personal prayer, opportunity for Sacramental Confession, and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Call 866-575-0075 or email: hopeandhealing@sistersoflife.org Rosary and Adoration for Life: Please consider spending time before the Blessed Sacrament and praying the Rosary for the conversion of hearts and minds so that all might have reverence and respect for the God-given gift of life, from the moment of conception until natural death. Using the words that work : Effectively opposing physician-assisted suicide: The LI Coalition for Life Educational Trust is sponsoring a seminar on PAS Sunday, May 21 st from 1:30-4:30pm at the American Legion Hall, 39 Nassau Ave, Islip. This seminar features Jason Negri, MS, JD of the Patients Rights Council. Learn how to compassionately and effectively speak out about the danger that physician-assisted suicide poses to the medically vulnerable. This seminar is important for young adults to seniors as we will all face end-of-life decisions with a medical community increasingly comfortable with hastening the death of patients. There is a Physician-Assisted Suicide bill currently in the NYS Assembly Health Committee (A2383, Paulin, Legalization of Physician-Assisted Suicide). The American Legion Hall is located behind Islip Town Hall, between Montauk Hwy (27A) and Amuxen Ct, west of Islip Ave (Rte 111). Municipal parking is on the east side of Town Hall.
