Public Worship January 31, 2016 THE WORD CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 98:1-4 Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The LORD has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
To God Be The Glory Text: Fanny Crosby Music: William Doane Public Domain To God be the glory, great things he hath done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, who yielded his life our redemption to win, and opened the life-gate that all may go in. (Chorus) Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son, and give him the glory; great things he hath done! O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, to every believer the promise of God; the vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives. (Chorus) Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; but purer and higher and greater will be our wonder, our transport when Jesus we see. (Chorus)
PRAYER OF INVOCATION The Lord be with you. The Lord bless you. Let us pray Ruth 2:4 CALL TO CONFESSION OF SIN Romans 3:23 All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. CONFESSION OF SIN Father, Son, and Spirit our Triune God you are the only true and living God. We know that you alone are good, yet we still turn to false gods for strength, for pleasure, for comfort, for life. But this is death. We confess that we have sinned, both in the evil we have done, and in the good we have done in order to avoid you. We do not know all the ways our hearts are far from you; we have deceived ourselves. We cannot even confess every sin, or know all our false gods, to turn away from them to you. We are utterly at your mercy. O Lord Jesus, be gracious to us. O Father, assure us of your love that makes all things new. O Holy Spirit, dwell in us and have your way with us. We pray in Christ our Savior. Amen. (Silent confession) ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS Romans 5:1 Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. May the peace of Christ be with you. And also with you! OFFERING Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow! Praise him, all creatures here below! Praise him above, ye heavenly host! Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen.
OLD TESTAMENT READING Psalm 103 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray (Elder prays) And now as our Savior taught us, we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Before The Throne Of God Above Text: Charitie Lees Bancroft Music: Vikki Cook 1997 Sovereign Grace Worship When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look to see him there, who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free, for God, the Just, is satisfied to look on him and pardon me, to look on him and pardon me. Behold him there! the risen Lamb, my perfect, spotless Righteousness, the great unchangeable I Am, the King of glory and of grace. One with himself I cannot die, my soul is purchased by his blood, my life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ my Savior and my God, with Christ my Savior and my God, with Christ my Savior and my God.
Immortal, Invisible Text: Walter Chalmers Smith Music: St. Denio, Welsh Melody Public Domain Unresting, unhasting and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all praise we would render; O help us to see tis only the splendor of light hideth thee!
GOSPEL READING Matthew 20:1-16 1 For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and to them he said, You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you. 5 So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, Why do you stand here idle all day? 7 They said to him, Because no one has hired us. He said to them, You go into the vineyard too. 8 And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first. 9 And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. 10 Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. 11 And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, 12 saying, These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat. 13 But he replied to one of them, Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity? 16 So the last will be first, and the first last. The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Praise be to you, O Christ! SERMON Divine Generosity (Rev. Aaron Morris)
THE UPPER ROOM CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles Creed What do you believe? I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. 1 The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic 2 church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. (Greet one another with the words, The peace of Christ be with you. ) INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE AND PRAYER WORDS OF INSTITUTION 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 THE MYSTERIUM FIDEI 1 Corinthians 11:26; 5:7-8 Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. O Sacred Head Text: Bernard of Clairvaux Music: J. S. Bach What thou, my Lord, hast suffered, was all for sinners gain; mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Savior! Tis I deserve thy place; look on me with thy favor, vouchsafe to me thy grace. What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest friend, for this thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? O make me thine forever, and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee.
