Third Baptist Church 410 West McKnight Drive Murfreesboro, TN 37129 (615) 893-8192 www.3bconline.com AUGUST 2014 EDITION The Greatest Music & the Best Ice Cream!... Sunday, August 17, 5:00 p.m. 3BC Worship Center Ice Cream Fellowship Immediately Following It was a time that spanned polyester leisure suits through giant shoulder pads and sport jackets with the sleeves pushed up to your elbows. Technology made us smile when it put things called computers on our desks, and broke our hearts at the sight of the Space Shuttle Challenger breaking apart seconds after liftoff. We watched with contentment when the Walton s would take ten minutes to say goodnight to each other, and laughed with delight as Heathcliff and Clair Huxtable tried each week to raise their four children including son, Theo. It was a period of time known simply as the 70 s and 80 s and if you were fortunate to live through it, it was an amazing time. One of the greatest accomplishments of the 70 s and 80 s was the music especially from the newly developing contemporary Christian genre which many originally referred to as Jesus Music. From the early composers like Andrae Crouch to the later writerperformers such as Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant, the music was uplifting and worshipful, connecting with people through its down-to-earth lyrics and messages of redemption, reconciliation and renewal. On Sunday, August 17 at 5:00 p.m. in the Worship Center, 3BC invites you to step back a couple decades and thoroughly enjoy an evening of incredible music guaranteed to fill your soul with praise and your hearts with joy. There will even be an Ice Cream Fellowship immediately following. Bring your favorite homemade ice cream and enjoy a casual evening of laughter and friendship with your church family. Be sure to invite some friends or neighbors, and be prepared for a wonderful night of music and fellowship and if you really feel like it, dig out your old super wide bell bottoms and slip on a mood ring for fun. A Letter From Marty Blakely..................................................................................................................................... Dear 3BC Family, It is hard to believe that summer is coming to an end. In a few short days kids will be returning to class excited about a new school year. We are excited about a new year at 3BC also. Sunday, August 10 is Promotion Sunday for our LIFE Groups. On that Sunday, all the Preschool, Children, and Youth promote to their next class. For adults, we just add another year to the sign on your door. Most look forward to this Sunday with great anticipation. Some kids are moving from preschool to children and from children to youth. They can t wait to come and see their new room and meet their new teachers. As I type this, Ray Colley and Adam Lickey are busy recruiting teachers to fill these vital roles in our LIFE Group ministry. I ask that you prayerfully consider serving in one of these important roles. LIFE Groups are vital to our ministry here at 3BC. The Worship Gathering is of utmost importance it is where we meet together as a body of believers to honor God and our Savior Jesus Christ and trust in the work of the Holy Spirit to lead us. The Worship Gathering is also where we hear the Word of God proclaimed through the scripture. It is in many ways the front door of our church. LIFE Groups are the next step in involvement at 3BC. We call them LIFE Groups for a specific reason. While it is Sunday School, we call it LIFE Groups in order to teach that the work of the groups goes well beyond one hour on Sunday Morning. The LIFE in LIFE Groups is an acronym for: Lessons for Life, Involvement of Individuals, Fellowship with the Family, and Equipping for Evangelism. Lessons for Life mean that we learn from scripture, truths that apply to our lives on a daily basis. We don t just learn about the Bible, we are confronted with its truth in order to transform our lives. Involvement of Individuals means that LIFE Groups provide an opportunity to serve either in your own group or in Preschool, Children, Youth, or College. Fellowship with the Family points to the fact that LIFE Groups provide small groups for members to connect with people in the same life situation. Equipping for Evangelism shows that we want to train members to share their faith where God has placed them. The theme for LIFE Groups in 2014-15 is Catalyst: What Starts Here Changes The World. Some definitions of catalyst include: w something that causes activity between two or more persons or forces without itself being affected. w a person or thing that precipitates an event or change w a person whose talk, enthusiasm, or energy causes others to be more friendly, enthusiastic, or energetic. Each of these definitions are applicable to our LIFE Groups. God is the catalyst that causes activity and precipitates change without Himself being changed. We want our interaction with scripture to change us every time we attend a LIFE Group. In turn, we want to be a catalyst for each other in our group to promote encouragement, energy, enthusiasm, and friendliness. Then as we leave our groups we want to be a catalyst to those we come in contact with, inviting them to Worship and our LIFE Group and sharing our story of what God has done in our lives. What starts in LIFE Groups changes you, a changed you in turn changes those you come in contact with, thus changing the world. As you can see, LIFE Groups are intended to be much more than one hour on Sunday morning. If you are not already involved in a LIFE Group, I encourage you to take advantage of Promotion Sunday to join a LIFE Group. If you are already a member of a LIFE Group, I encourage you to take a role of leadership in your current LIFE Group, in another age group, or possibly to help start a new adult group. Promotion Sunday is always an exciting time. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday, August 10 as we kick off our new LIFE Group year! Picnic Pounding/Wedding Shower For Ray & Alyssa Colley Sunday, September 7 It actually sounds like it might be a dangerous event to attend especially if you are the guests of honor. But trust us, it s not as bad as it sounds. The age-old church pounding dates back to the old pioneer days, especially in the south. When a new preacher was coming to a small town, the church would gather to clean the parsonage and stock the pantry with all the essentials that you guessed it were sold by the pound at the town general store. Salt, flour, sugar, coffee, corn meal and dried beans would all be neatly displayed on the shelves next to delicious canned goods the ladies would put up in mason jars. Join with the whole church when we hold a good old fashioned pounding for our new Minister to Preschool and Children, Ray Colley and his new wife Alyssa, who were married on July 19. Given their recent wedding, we re adding even more fun by making it also a wedding shower for them. The Pounding/Wedding Shower will take place during our churchwide picnic on Sunday, September 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Siegel Park. All gifts are certainly welcome, but you might leave off the dried beans and corn meal. Wednesday Night Meals Resume August 13 3BC s Wednesday night meals will resume on August 13 at 5:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Look for the menus each week on the tear-off portion of the worship guide. Meals are $5.00 per adult (13 & up), $2.50 per child (5-12) and $1.00 per child (4 & under). Be sure to make your reservation by filling out the tear-off tab and placing it in the offering plate during worship on Sunday mornings, or by calling the Church Office. All reservations are to be made by Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. LIFE Group Promotion Sunday, August 10 Be sure to be in attendance on Sunday morning, August 10 as our LIFE Groups will be having promotion Sunday. All applicable aged-group classes will be moving up to their new classes to begin another wonderful year of Bible study and spiritual growth together. Two times will be available each week: 6:00 a.m. - 6:50 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall or Noon - 1:00 p.m. at the Stones River Mall Food Court. Our new book is Taking God at His Word by Kevin DeYoung. The cookout starts at 5:00 p.m. Looking forward to seeing you there. Time of Prayer For Upcoming Year, Wednesday, August 20 Going to God in prayer shows a total dependence on Him, a desire to be used by Him, and an understanding that all we do is done through Him and for Him. Going to God in prayer at the beginning of the school year fits the pattern of Jesus. Before He began His ministry He spent 40 days in prayer gaining insight, guidance and strength for the ministry that was ahead of Him. In honor of Christ s example and seeking His blessings on the upcoming year, we invite all college/young adults to a special prayer meeting scheduled for Wednesday, August 20 at 7:30 p.m. During this time we will pray for the MTSU and Motlow campuses, our ministry, LIFE Groups, events, and our campus outreaches. Come be a part of this important evening as we seek God s power, guidance and protection over another year of ministry. Show Christ s Love Through Wee Haul, August 23 One of the most appreciated ministries of the year is 3BC s Wee Haul, a simple yet powerful way to show Christ s love to others. We are thrilled to plan this event again this year, inviting all of our 3BC church family to assist MTSU students move into their campus dorm rooms on Saturday, August 23. This is a great way to give students a first hand glimpse of our church and introduce them to us as individual Christians, 3BC as a church family, and our LORD Jesus Christ. Please meet at church at 8:00 a.m. for prayer and instructions before we leave for the campus. Special First Night of College Ministry Worship, Wednesday, August 27 Wednesday, August 27 is the first worship night of the year for the 3BC College Ministry. This will be a special evening of worship as our church will be providing lunch for the Baptist Collegiate Ministry students earlier in the day. All BCM students will be invited back later that evening for a Night at Third to enjoy worship, fellowship and everybody s favorite free pizza! Be sure to be a part of this great night! First 3BC Tailgating Event, Saturday, August 30 Add college and football together and you get tailgating! What better way to start the new football season than some hamburgers and hot dogs on a smoking grill. Join us on Saturday, August 30 for our first tailgating event celebrating MTSU s first home game! 3BC college ministry loves to use this event to develop friendships with those passing through The Grove by offering free lunch, drinks, and games. Although the time of the game is still to be determined, check back for updates on the tailgating starting time. Third Baptist Church, Murfreesboro August 2014 page 4

Children s Bible Drillers pass through three levels of participation: Church Drill, Association Drill, and State Drill. Children gain skills and knowledge through Bible Drill that will literally last a lifetime. 3BC is thrilled to once again be offering Bible Drill for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. An informational meeting for children and parents interested in participating in Bible Drill will be held on Sunday, August 17 at 4:00 p.m. in Room 303.
