Mercantlism, Englightenment, 1 st Great Awakening, French and Indian War

MERCANTILISM (ECONOMIC) 1. Colonists send Raw Goods (tobacco, lumber, flower) to mother country. Mother country sends Manufactured goods to colonies. 2. Export Economy 3. Protecting imperial wealth through monopolies and tariffs.

1. Navigation Acts (1660-1750) Colonists can ONLY trade with England. 2. Colonists traded with England s enemies (Dutch & French) to gain additional profits. 3. Colonists do not abide by the law and/or England does not enforce it. 4. Salutary Neglect Lax attention to the colonies resulted in colonial autonomy Colonists able to elect their own assemblies and town hall meeting leaders. BUT WHAT IF I WANT TO TRADE WITH OTHER COUNTRIES TO MAKE MORE MONEY?! SORRY! YOU CAN ONLY SELL GOODS TO THE MOTHER COUNTRY (BRITAIN), NOT OUR ENEMIES I AM GOING TO DO IT ANYWAY SINCE IT IS NOT ENFORCED SALUTORY NEGLECT!!!!

Enlightenment (1650/1700s) 1. Humans can change world through rational thinking, education and selfimprovement. Not predestined by God. 2. John Locke - Born with Natural Rights Life, Liberty and Property a. Social Contract (Two Treatises of Government) Governments are created to preserve natural rights. b. If Gov t does not protect natural rights people can revolt! 3. Deism God created the world, but humans change it. 4. Franklin (invented lighting rod), Washington and Jefferson were Deists.

Why is the Enlightenment important to the development of the British North American Colonies? HELPED CREATE A NEW AMERICAN IDENTITY.HOW?.. 1. Leads to Republicanism (non-monarchical form of gov t) 2. Emphasized individual talent over hereditary privilege. 3. Colonists viewed themselves as blessed with liberty.

1 st Great Awakening Religion (1730s/1740s) 1. Pietism stressed individual s relationship with God. 2. Evangelical Protestant Religious Revivalism (people become very religious) 3. George Whitefield emotional preacher to attract new converts. 4. Open air camps

1 st GREAT AWAKENING Why is the 1 st Great Awakening important to the development of the British North American Colonies? HELPS CREATE A NEW AMERICAN IDENTITY.HOW?.. 1. Created new religious denominations in the colonies: Baptists, Presbyterians, 2. Religiously diverse (pluralist society) setting the stage for religious toleration. 3. Religiously different than England (Anglican) 4. Christianity spreads to slaves.

What caused the French and Indian War? (1754-1763) Dispute over who controls the Ohio River Basin

How did the colonists mobilize for the French and Indian War? 1. Albany Congress (1754) - Discussed possibility of colonial union (1 st time). 2. Benjamin Franklin s JOIN or DIE cartoon. 3. George Washington = Hero of the War

What are the effects of the French & Indian War? 1. France Loses Territory; England gains Canada, W. Appalachian mountains.

2. George Washington becomes War Hero Colonists gain confidence. 3. Pontiac s Rebellion laid siege to Detroit. 4. Proclamation Line of 1763 - Prohibited the colonists from moving westward. It was supposed to be reserved for Indians.

5. Britain incurred severe war debt. 6. To alleviate war debt England taxed the colonists (Sugar Act, Stamp Act), without colonial representation 7. End of Salutary Neglect

How was the Seven Year s War a Turning Point in American Relations? Salutory Neglect (enabled colonists to have local experiences with selfgovernment & some economic freedom*) + Enlightenment (rational thinking & John Locke s ideas) + 1 st Great Awakening (new religions in colonies) = AN AMERICAN IDENTITY DIFFERENT THAN BRITAIN FRENCH & INDIAN WAR 1.
