volunteers SUGGESTED SCHEDULE TEACHING TIPS Preschoolers learn by and enjoy repetition, whether singing a song, playing a game, or hearing a Bible story over and over. Let a child know what is expected of him in a positive way. Instead of saying: Don t hit, say: Hitting hurts our friends. Use rest room/change diapers. (5-10 minutes) Enjoy a snack. (5-10 minutes) Listen to quiet music and relax. (10-20 minutes) Do, move, play! (35-45 minutes) Put away materials. (5 minutes) REMINDERS Use a calm, quiet voice. Focus attention on the preschoolers. Check diapers often. Review parents instructions and medical information for preschoolers. Release children to authorized adults only. Thank families for bringing their children to church. Ananias Met Paul Acts 9:10-22 * Ananias had heard that Paul hurt people who loved Jesus. * God told Ananias to find Paul and give him a message. * Ananias went to the house where Paul was staying. Ananias put his hand on Paul and said, Brother, Jesus sent me to you. He is with you. Always follow God. 1 Peter 4:19 SoNG Use the tune The Farmer in the Dell to sing: I can love my friends, I can love my friends, I can be kind to them, I can love my friends. BIBLE Fun activities ROCK A DOLL AND SING Wrap a doll in a blanket. Offer the doll to a child to rock. Sing the song about friends. (See margin.) Mention that Ananias was kind and helped Paul. Talk about ways the child can be kind to her friends. Comment that being kind to friends is a way to show love to Jesus. TOSS A BEANBAG Print the Bible Phrase on a sheet of paper. Lay the paper and Bible story picture Ananias Met Paul (Pack Item 7) on the floor a few inches apart. Give a child a beanbag to toss onto the picture or Bible Phrase paper. Say the Bible Phrase or talk about the Bible story, depending on where the beanbag lands. Encourage children to take turns tossing the beanbag. Mention that taking turns is a way to be kind and show love for Jesus. ROLL CARS Locate a few sturdy cars for boys and girls to roll. Talk to them about places they travel to in family cars. Mention that Ananias walked to the house where Paul was staying. Encourage the children to take turns rolling the cars. Comment that being kind and considerate shows love for Jesus. Tell the Bible story. Remark that Ananias was kind to Paul. BUILD WITH PLASTIC BLOCKS Provide a set of interlocking plastic blocks for 1s and 2s to stack and build. Talk to the preschoolers about what they are building. Thank preschoolers for being kind and working together. Tell the Bible story. Comment that Ananias was kind to Paul. Showing kindness shows love for Jesus. COMPLETE AN OBSTACLE COURSE Make an obstacle course in the room. Turn a large opened box on its side for children to crawl through. Add a chair to walk around, a cardboard block to jump over, and a tape line to walk on. Comment that children are growing and learning to do new things. Thank God for strong bodies. He talked to them about Jesus. * One of the women was named Lydia. * Lydia and the other women listened to Paul tell about Jesus. Learn about Jesus all day long, and clap your hands. Clap your hands. BIBLE Fun activities MAKE MUSIC Locate a few toy pots and pans for children to play as musical instruments. Open the Bible to Acts 16 and tell the Bible story. TALK ON TELEPHONES Pretend to have a conversation on a toy telephone. Offer the phone to a child and encourage him to say God or Jesus. Remind preschoolers that the Bible tells us to learn about Jesus. Teachers at church tell about Jesus to help children learn. Get a Bible and turn to Acts 16. Remark that Paul talked to some women sitting by the river. Paul told the women about Jesus. SPLASH AND SCOOP WATER Put a small pan of water on a towel spread on the floor or a table. Give a large kitchen ladle to a child to scoop water. While the preschooler enjoys the water play, remark that sometimes people have church near water. Mention beach or lakeside meetings. Remind children that Lydia and her friends went to church beside a river. Lydia was glad to hear the news about Jesus. READ BOOKS Provide several books about Jesus, the Bible, and helping. Prop the books beside a plastic swim ring. Spread a large quilt or blanket for 1s and 2s to sit on while looking at books. Urge children to take turns sitting on the swim ring or wearing it as they read books about Jesus. ENJOY AN INDOOR PICNIC Spread a bright cloth on the floor. Thank children for sitting still while you serve them a light snack. Talk about picnics the children may have had with family or friends. Mention the blue sky and water visible at the river where Lydia and her friends had church. BUILD WITH BLOCKS While 1s and 2s stack cardboard blocks, show them the Bible story picture Paul and Barnabas (Pack Item 9). Point to the men and suggest that God helped them go many places. Open the Bible to Acts 13 and tell the Bible story. Explain that God took care of Paul and Barnabas, and God cares for us, too. Thank God for His care. Lead preschoolers to repeat the Bible Phrase. GO ON A LISTENING WALK Take two children at a time on a walk around the church. Guide the children to listen for the sounds of people singing, talking to God, or reading aloud the Bible. Comment that people at church learn about Jesus and God. They thank God for His love and care. Explain that Paul and Barnabas told people about Jesus, and God cared for the men as they traveled. PACK A SUITCASE Locate a small wheeled carry-on bag or backpack. Invite a child to pack for a pretend trip. Ask her what she will take on her trip. Suggest that she can take a Bible with her so she can learn about Jesus. Remind the child that God will care for her on her trip. Sing the song about telling others about Jesus. (See left.) PLAY WITH BOATS Lay several toy boats on a large piece of blue paper (to resemble a lake). Encourage boys and girls to push the boats over the water. Explain that Paul and Barnabas may have traveled by boat to tell people about Jesus. Tell the Bible story and say the Bible Phrase. They tried to hurt him. * Paul got in trouble because he talked about Jesus. * Soldiers started to take Paul away, but Paul did not stop talking about Jesus. * Even though the people were angry, Paul kept on talking about Jesus. It is true. BIBLE Fun activities STAND ON CARDBOARD BLOCKS Make a square platform using sturdy cardboard blocks. Help a child step onto the platform. Then help him step down. Tell the Bible story as you help preschoolers step on and off the platform. Comment that Paul stood on some steps when he talked to the people. God was with Paul and helped him when he was in trouble. WALK ON FOOTPRINTS Use the Footprint Shapes (Pack Item 27) to make a path around the room. Lead boys and girls to walk on the footprint path. Mention that Paul walked to many different places to tell people about Jesus. Sometimes Paul made the people angry, and they wanted him to be quiet. Remind preschoolers that God was always with Paul and helped him. READ BOOKS Offer a few books that tell about Jesus. Put these with the Read to Me Bible for Kids. Read the books to interested preschoolers. Relate the pictures and story to Paul s story. Suggest that even though Paul made people angry, God was with Paul and helped him. Sing the song about God. (See margin.) Guide preschoolers to understand that God loves them and will always be with them. PLAY WITH SOUND TOYS Offer a few sound-making toys such as a musical ball, rolling bell toy, and plastic keys. As children play with the toys, comment that people heard Paul talk about Jesus. Ask preschoolers who talks to them about Jesus. Remind children that God was with Paul and God will be with them. Show children the Bible story picture Trouble for Paul (Pack Item 10). USE A TOY MICROPHONE Use a toy microphone to sing the song about God s love. (See margin.) Place the microphone near a child s mouth as you continue to sing. Remark that you love God and Jesus, too. Thank God for His care. WAVE STREAMERS Give crepe paper streamers to preschoolers to wave as you sing a song about Jesus. (Or play.) Thank them for showing their love for God. BUILD WITH WAFFLE-type BLOCKS Locate a few waffle-type blocks and add them to the cardboard blocks. Encourage preschoolers to be safe and kind as they work together to stack or build. Show preschoolers the Bible story picture Paul and Silas (Pack Item 11). Comment that God wants people to sing to Him. Sing the song printed in the margin, then lead preschoolers to sing, too. Provide things like a brush, book, toothbrush case, or pajama shirt to go in the backpack. Invite a child to pack for a pretend trip. Ask her what she would take. The items may spark her imagination. PLAY AN ACTION GAME Lead preschoolers to do actions such as hop, crawl, stretch, wiggle, clap hands, bend, or turn. Do the motions with the children. BIBLE Fun activities ROLL A Big BALL Encourage two or three friends to sit on the floor. Give them a large ball to roll between them. Tell the children they are working together at church. Tell the Bible story as children play. Comment that you are glad friends can have fun at church and learn about Jesus. Sing the song about Jesus. (See margin.) PLAY WITH Manipulative TOYS Display some favorite toys that preschoolers enjoy, such as stacking cups, stacking ring toy, and shape sorters. Add one or two wooden puzzles. Put all the materials on a cloth spread on the floor. Tell the Bible story as the children choose toys and play. Mention that having fun at church with friends is one way to learn about Jesus. Comment that Timothy learned from his family and friends. Boys and girls learn, too. Open the Bible to Acts 16 and tell the Bible story. MATCH CARDS Get duplicates of simple greeting cards, colored index cards, or envelopes. Put one of each item in a shoebox and spread the others on the floor. Invite a child to look at the cards and locate matches. Remark that the child has learned to do many things. Timothy learned about God, and preschoolers can, too. Tell the Bible story and show the Bible story picture Paul Wrote to Timothy (Pack Item 12). WORK PUZZLES Offer two or three simple wooden puzzles for 1s and 2s to work. Lay the Kids Activity Page near the puzzles. As children work puzzles, ask who tells them about Jesus. Help the children know that teachers, family members, and friends can help them learn about Jesus. Remark that Paul helped Timothy learn about Jesus. Pop BUBBLES If possible, take the children outside to a safe area to catch and pop bubbles. Consider pouring solution in a shallow pan and using a clean flyswatter to make large bubbles. After a while, sit down in a shady spot and open the Bible to Acts 16. Begin to talk about Paul writing a letter to Timothy. Sing the song about learning. (See margin.) 28-BTH UNIT 2, SESSION 6
