(2 Thessalonians 2:3-3). Spreading the Gospel and doing what the Lord commands in pursuit of the life of discipleship makes us targets for the evil one, who wants to derail our good work. Our first defence is to direct our hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ. take five minutes to feed your faith every day Remove this page from the bulletin and put it where you ll see it each day. Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow a day at a time. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2013 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME We re all in this together Pope Francis in tune with Jesus reminds us again and again to welcome one another, to listen to one another, to seek truth together. There are passages in the gospel that pit the Sadducees against Jesus. They ask him what appears to be a trick question, trying to show the impossibility of resurrection in which they do not believe, but Jesus takes their question seriously. He does not call them names; he understands that people can sincerely disagree with each other, even in matters of faith not a bad lesson for a world in which so many seem to want to exclude one another over controversial issues. TODAY S READINGS: 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14; 2 Thessalonians 2:16-3:5; Luke 20:27-38 or 20:27, 34-38 (156) May our Lord Jesus Christ himself... encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11 MEMORIAL OF MARTIN OF TOURS, BISHOP Thank you for your part in bringing peace On Veteran s Day we remember the sacrifices large and small made by members of the armed forces in defense of their country. It is also a day when the church remembers Saint Martin of Tours, a Roman soldier who gave up his military career after becoming a Christian (though many Christians did serve in Roman armies despite the persecutions the Roman state visited upon their brother and sister Christians). Today s remembrances encourage you to express your gratitude for those who, whether laying down or taking up arms, have made sacrifices for peace. TODAY S READINGS: Wisdom 1:1-7; Luke 17:1-6 (491) Love justice... think of the Lord in goodness, and seek him in integrity of heart. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12 MEMORIAL OF JOSAPHAT, BISHOP, MARTYR Reunited we stand History teaches that humanity is more prone to divide than unite. Church history, alas, bears out this sad truth. The East -West divide in the church in 1054, sometimes referred to as the Great Schism, stands as Exhibit A. While recent decades have brought hopeful signs of emerging reconciliation, that was not the case during the life of Saint Josaphat, a monk and archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church who was killed by a mob in 1623 for encouraging Orthodox Christians to reunite with Rome. There may not be a lot you can do on your own to heal such long-standing divisions, but perhaps there is one closer to home in your family, workplace, or neighborhood that you can attempt to heal. TODAY S READINGS: Wisdom 2:23-3:9; Luke 17:7-10 (492) The souls of the just are in the hand of God. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13 MEMORIAL OF FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI, VIRGIN Don t let obstacles become an obstacle Cabrini Street in Chicago runs for only a few blocks just southwest of downtown in the city where Frances Cabrini made such a difference in the lives of thousands of poor Italian immigrants. It s a somewhat meager monument to a woman who began from nothing a religious order, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, which at her death numbered 4,000 members working on two continents. Probably, though, she wouldn t have minded. Difficulties, she wrote the sisters, make you stronger and more steadfast and prove where there is fidelity and consistency. How can they do the same for you? TODAY S READINGS: Wisdom 6:1-11; Luke 17:11-19 (493) Stand up and go; your faith has saved you. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14 It s a bird, it s a plane, no, it s... The superhero in a comic book confronts the bad guys and helps the good folks out of whatever jam they have gotten themselves into. Real life is different. The salvation Jesus offers and the church affirms is not a magic potion for whatever ails us; it is the promise of a life filled with meaning and purpose, even in the midst of messiness. Believe in the real thing, not whatever quick fix you are offered next. Stop looking up in the sky for your savior and start looking deep in your heart. TODAY S READINGS: Wisdom 7:22b-8:1; Luke 17:20-25 (494) There will be those who will say to you, Look, there he is, or Look, here he is. Do not go off, do not run in pursuit. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15 MEMORIAL OF ALBERT THE GREAT, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH The Universe: God s page-turner Albert the Great (d. 1280) was a student of nature and the natural sciences who helped shape the philosophical inquiries and investigative methods of modern science. Do there exist many worlds, or is there but a single world? asks Albert. This is one of the most noble and exalted questions in the study of Nature. Knowledge is a powerful thing, and Albert and the scholastics, including his famous student Saint Thomas Aquinas, never shied away from pursuing the truth. As Pope Benedict said of Albert: He shows us that faith is not opposed to reason, and that the created world can be seen as a book written by God. Enjoy your reading. TODAY S READINGS: Wisdom 13:1-9; Luke 17:26-37 (495) For from the greatness and the beauty of created things their original author, by analogy, is seen. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16 MEMORIAL OF MARGARET OF SCOTLAND Be resolute in what is good Margaret of Scotland persisted in prayer and good works in the midst of a world rocked by violence and injustice. Warring between nations was fueled in part by a desire for power by religious and political leaders and by religious intolerance. Even as her husband, King Malcolm, led battles that brought devastation to others, Margaret sought to alleviate suffering. Stories about Margaret show that she cared for people who were poor and for children who were orphaned. She prayed regularly. Our world is centuries away from Margaret s medieval one, yet suffering continues. Today let us persist in prayers and works for justice and peace. TODAY S READINGS: Wisdom 18:14-16; 19:6-9; Luke 18:1-8 (496) Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. 2013 by TrueQuest Communications, L.L.C.
