AUGUSTINE SPOTLIGHT - APRIL 22 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER The Fourth Sunday of Easter is known as Good Shepherd Sunday. In the Gospel from other liturgical years, Jesus focuses on protecting His sheep His people from wolves and marauders. In today s Gospel, Jesus focuses on how He is the Good Shepherd because He lays down His life for His sheep. He goes so far to say that this is why the Father loves Him, because of His sacrifice for His sheep. If God the Father loves the Son because of the Son s sacrificial love, should we not model Jesus by living lives of sacrificial love for each other? The idea of self sacrifice for something other than ourselves is countercultural. Our society is all about what we can get for ourselves, most often at other people s expense, especially the week and vulnerable. The first reading from Peter and the letter from John emphasize that we are supposed to be countercultural in living our faith. Peter recounts our Psalm for today, Psalm 118, in which we hear the words, The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, referring to Jesus. It would be easy to say that this is not relevant today, because we supposedly live in a Christian nation that accepts Jesus. But I disagree. Our society does not adhere to the teachings of Jesus when they do not conform to society s standards. It is my impression that most Americans have a feel good Jesus and not a sacrificial Jesus, partly because having a sacrificial Jesus calls us to be sacrificial people loving God with our whole being and our neighbor as ourself. There is a reason that Catholic churches have crucifixes, not empty crosses. How will we know that we are truly following Jesus? John tells us that the world will not know us. The world society will not recognize or accept us because we do not conform to its standards, which are inherently not Christian because the world does not know Jesus. But more important for us, we will be children of God. On this Good Shepherd Sunday, we should ask ourselves, are we Jesus sheep who hear and know His voice and follow him, or are we sheep that would rather conform to a society that does not know Him? Paul A. Gulig Chair, Service Committee and Parish Council 3

Around the parish, greater Gainesville and the Diocese Composer s Corner 4 rd Sunday of Easter (Year B) April 22nd, 2018 The response for the Responsorial Psalm for this week is: The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone (Ps 118, 22 [NABRE]). This verse contains imagery that depicts both loneliness and strength. For composing my setting of this text, I honed in on the words rejected, and cornerstone for inspiration. Piano and Organ Player St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Hawthorne, Florida is looking for a piano and organ player for their 11:15 A.M. Mass. If you would like more information, please contact Charlotte Jean Delk at 352-481-2403 The first half of my setting rests in a minor tonality; the melody highlights colorful chord tones while the accompaniment sustains strong, functional triads. These elements are what I chose to capture the rejection expressed in the first half of the response, even if melodramatically so. The second half of my setting focuses on the strength and earthiness that is evoked by the word cornerstone. When I think of the word cornerstone, I hear builders talking, the sounds of shovels and pickaxes, and I am somehow more aware of a time gone by. There is a ruggedness, but also a great strength that these ideas convey to me. In order to highlight this, I chose to utilize a chord progression that is associated with heroism in the second half of my setting. My setting finally concludes with a warm, resounding major chord. As always, thank you for your time and interest!
