Consistory and Staff Retreat Thanks to all of you who prayed for the Consistory and Staff retreat on Saturday, February 17. We re grateful for the 19 people who were willing to invest a Saturday in seeking God for how they can contribute to making Trinity more healthy and fruitful. Need for Renewal In the spring of 2017 we perceived the need for renewal. After seven years of gradual growth modest ministry renewal and fruitfulness, we experienced a down turn in 2017. We have lost members and have not been able to sustain some of our church programs. While numbers of worshippers and ministry programs are not the mission of the church, these may be indicators of the spiritual health of a congregation. Praying for Personal Renewal We spent the summer of 2017 praying for personal renewal. A small group of people met during the summer praying for personal renewal. During this time, every member was invited to discern their need for and pray for their own personal renewal. We intend to continue to pray for personal renewal. Each month prayer opportunities will be initiated through our Prayer Team. Leading Congregational Renewal By the fall of 2017, the leaders discerned that we need to not only pray for spiritual renewal, but also lead toward spiritual renewal. Starting in the fall we have been leading spiritual renewal by having gospel conversations. These are meant to confirm either an appreciation for a true saving faith of our members, or the need for a true saving faith. This retreat was dedicated to seeking scripture and the wisdom of wise people about leading Congregational renewal. In addition to prayer and confirming a real saving faith, how might we lead spiritual renewal? We tapped the wisdom of Thom Ranier, the director of LifeWay Ministries. During the past 30 years Thom has led three congregations in a process of renewal, and has surveyed thousands of congregations to gain insight about what really brings renewal to aging congregations. Here s wisdom from the experience of hundreds of congregations like ours that was communicated at this year s retreat. If you want congregational renewal there are four steps you need to take. Step 1: Raise the bar of membership expectation. Step 2: Have a clear process of discipleship. Step 3: Increase your outward focus. Step : Develop Leadership and Relational Skills. Vision in the Driver s Seat In addition, we tapped the wisdom of George Bullard. George has helped congregations understand themselves using the metaphor of a human life. We go through stages of infancy, childhood, adolescence etc. Once a congregation reaches the aging stage of life, it needs to renew or die. The path to renewal requires a new vision. This vision needs to be in the driver s seat of the congregation, taking priority over programs and management. This retreat set in motion a process that isn t done yet. You will be invited into dreaming dreams and seeing visions for the future of Trinity. Stay tuned! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The great people of the earth today are the people who pray. I do not mean those who talk about prayer, nor those who say they believe in prayer, nor yet those who can explain about prayer; but I mean these people who take time and pray. They have not time. It must be taken from something else. This something else is important, very important, and pressing, but still less important and less pressing than prayer. There are people that put prayer first, and group the other items in life s schedule around and after prayer. - S.D. Gordon
