Gloria in excelsis Deo! 4 O Little Town of Bethlehem little town of Bethlehem, How still we see e lie! O Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all years Are met in e to night. St. Louis

For Christ is born of Mary, And gared all above, While mortals sleep, angels keep Their watch of wond ring love. O morning stars, toger Proclaim holy birth! And praises sing to God King, And peace to all on earth. How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is giv n! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heav n. No ear may hear his coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still The dear Christ enters in. O holy Child of Bethlehem! Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in; Be born in us today. We hear Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel! It Came upon Midnight Clear It came upon midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near earth To touch ir harps of gold: Peace on earth, good will to all From heaven s all gracious King; The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear angels sing. Carol Still through cloven skies y come, With peaceful wings unfurled, And still ir heav nly music floats O er all weary world: Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hov ring wing, And ever o er its Babel sounds The blessed angels sing. And ye, beneath life s crushing load, Whose forms are bending low, Who toil along climbing way with painful steps and slow; Look now! for glad and golden hours Come swiftly on wing: O rest beside weary road And hear angels sing. For, lo, days are hastening on, By prophet bards foretold, When with evercircling years Comes round age of gold; When peace shall over all earth Its ancient splendors fling, And all world give back song Which now angels sing. Homily Profession of Faith All genuflect. I believe in one God, Far almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son of God, born of Far before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with Far; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by Holy Spirit was incarnate of Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on third day in accordance with Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at right hand of Far. He will come again in glory to judge living and dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in Holy Spirit, Lord, giver of life, who proceeds from Far and Son, who with Far and Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for forgiveness of sins and I look forward to resurrection of dead and life of world to come. Amen. Universal Prayer The response is, Lord, hear our prayer. 14

G u i d e l i n e s for R e c e p t i o n of C o m m u n i o n For Catholics As Catholics, we fully participate in celebration of Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive Body and Blood of Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where re is no opportunity for confession. In this case, person is to be mindful of obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. For our Fellow Christians We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of Eucharist as our brors and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and action of Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one anor and begin to dispel sad divisions which separate us. We pray that se will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ s prayer for us that y may all be one (Jn 17:21). Because Catholics believe that celebration of Eucharist is a sign of reality of oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by or Christians requires permission according to directives of diocesan bishop and provisions of canon law (canon 844 4). Members of Orthodox Churches, Assyrian Church of East, and Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect discipline of ir own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, Code of Canon Law does not object to reception of communion by Christians of se Churches (canon 844 3). For those Not Receiving Holy Communion All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in ir hearts a prayerful desire for unity with Lord Jesus and with one anor. For Non-Christians We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit m to Holy Communion, we ask m to offer ir prayers for peace and unity of human family. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC, November 1996. 22
