Liturgy Reflection 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time June 21, 2015 This is how it is, Jesus says in this gospel. Yet there is no single way to describe the kingdom of God. Here Jesus uses two similar parables to teach us that the kingdom is realized in the intersection of our own work (plant the seed) with God's work (the mystery of life growing and bearing fruit). The Good News is that God's kingdom is assured the scattered seed will yield a harvest; the tiny seed will grow into a large plant. This is [really] how it is! Much of what we do successfully every day depends upon our cooperation with others. Making visible God's kingdom is first of all the work of God, but isn't it wonderful that God chooses to invite us to cooperate in this great work! What is the farmer s job in both of these parables? What is God s job? Could you ask yourself the same two questions about your ministry your job and God s job? Can you trust God to do God s job? How does what Pope Francis says below relate to the words below from this reading? To what shall we compare the kingdom of God? It is like the mustard seed. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. The Church, he said, is something else. The disciples do not make the Church they are the messengers sent by Jesus. And Christ was sent by the Father: The Church begins there, he said, in the heart of the Father, who had this idea of love. So this love story began, a story that has gone on for so long, and is not yet ended. We, the women and men of the Church, we are in the middle of a love story: each of us is a link in this chain of love. And if we do not understand this, we have understood nothing of what the Church is. But how does it increase? Jesus said simply: like the mustard seed, it grows like yeast in flour, without noise. Mass in the Chapel of the Casa Santa Marta, Vatican Radio, April 24, 2013 Next Week s readings June 28, 2015 year Readings B 13th Sunday in Ordinary First Reading Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24 By the envy of the devil, death entered the world. Psalm 30 I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me. Second Reading 2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15 Your abundance should supply the needs of the poor. Gospel Mark 5:21-24, 35b-43 Little girl, I say to you, arise! The first line of our first reading, from the book of Wisdom, sets the tone for the Liturgy of the Word today: God did not make death. In the Gospel Jesus heals a woman with an incurable illness and raises Jairus daughter to life. The key to both miracles is the faith of those who approach him. We can listen to all of today s readings for passages that point to God s preference for life and reflect on how our faith can grow in response. Catholic Cemeteries We remember and give thanks at our regular Eucharistic celebrations for all of those who have died. All are invited. Unless otherwise noted, all Masses are on Saturday mornings at 10:30 am. The St. Vincent de Paul Society Mission Needs Your Help! The rent is $250 a week at the seedy motel off Aurora and the family of four is crammed into a single room. An elderly veteran is behind on his utility bills but overwhelmed at how to navigate the system to get his bills current. The rent goes up for another household because they are working now, and the more money they make the higher their pay-by-need rate goes, and the vicious cycle continues. They are the working poor, the unemployed and unemployable, the disabled, the cancer survivor, the struggling matriarch, the lost and lonely veteran, the recent transplant, the former homeless, the single mom, the woman taking care of her dying parents, and the guy who is beating AIDS but between jobs. These are our neighbors; the ones who call on St. Vincent de Paul to help them keep a roof over their heads and food on their table. These are the people who so quickly would fall through the cracks if it weren t for our St. Vincent de Paul society at St. John s. Yes, these are our neighbors and our mission is to help them. But the reality is that we are running out of money. If we don t replenish our reserves we will need to cut back our services. In fact, at our last meeting, we decided to lower the amount of assistance we can offer to each family we are called to help and to be a bit more selective in who we choose to help. But even at this lowered rate of assistance we will run out of money in a few months without an influx of donations. We often ask for food donations and you have been very generous with those donations of non-perishable food items. And, by all means, please keep those food donations coming because we bring one or two bags of food to each and every family we visit. But bags of food can t pay the rent or stop the shutoff notice for water or electricity. A bag of food also can t get a family a set of sheets or a new bed. That s why we are also asking you to consider a one-time or a monthly donation to the St. John SVdP Society of St John s. For those getting a packet of envelopes each month, it s easy: use the monthly Saint Vincent de Paul Society envelope in your set of envelopes. And if you are giving electronically, use one of the green Saint Vincent de Paul Society envelopes you will find in the pews. Whichever envelope you use, just drop it into the collection basket, say a prayer, and smile knowing that you are helping the neediest of your neighbors. Thank you. NORTHWEST CATHOLIC ON THE AIR! Just in time for summer. Fr. John Madigan was interviewed for NORTH- WEST CATHOLIC on the Air, discussing pilgrimages he has taken. Lauren White of Bishop Blanchet High School is also featured, discussing the Journeys of Faith program. Find out how to get your passport for local pilgrimages! This show airs on AM 1050 Sacred Heart Radio at the following times from June 16-30: Program times Sundays 8:00 AM Mondays 11:00 AM Thursdays 6:30 PM Saturdays 3:00 PM Sacred Heart Radio AM 1050 Seattle AM 970 Spokane AM 1240 Olympia CATHOLIC WAR VETERANS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, INC. The Catholic War Veterans of the USA would like to establish a new Post at St. Matthew Parish, Seattle [Lake City], WA. CWV s purpose is to support and advocate for Veterans of all Faiths, and their dependents, in obtaining earned benefits. We desire to provide "effective healing prayer" for all of our Veterans. We will strive [through what we refer to as Americanism" and "Catholic Action"] to alleviate spiritual decline and systemic dysfunction within our communities, our military, our nation, and our culture. In light of the discord and dissonance that we see in our world, our nation, and our culture, we really need to find the time as well as the fee for membership in the Catholic War Veterans of the USA. Membership is open to any Catholic Veteran with an honorable discharge who has served 90 days or more in the US Armed Forces, Reserve, or National Guard. We need a minimum of 15 members to open a Post. Ultimately, it is our intention to be known as the most dynamic Post in the country. For more information call Robert W.
