THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH THE DAY OF PENTECOST MAY 20, 2018

BECOMING AWARE Pilgrims are persons in motion passing through territories not their own, writes Richard Niebuhr, seeking something we might call completion, or perhaps the word clarity will do as well, a goal to which only the spirit s compass points the way. Before the day of Pentecost, before that crowded moment in Jerusalem, the disciples were in hiding or had returned to their old lives. On Pentecost, they became the first pilgrims. With those flames riding their ears, they got into boats or walked out into the countryside to carry their words to the ends of the earth. This is the craving of the Holy Spirit, the driving passionate voice. It is her hand set against my back, I see now. It is not finished, she whispers. It did not end with the one on the cross. ~ Things Seen & Unseen: A Year Lived by Faith, Nora Gallagher GATHERING RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL Some traditions ring Sanctus Bells to call worshippers attention to the holy. (Sanctus means holy or sacred. ) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us. VOLUNTARY Largo J.S. Bach INTROIT O Hail This Joyful Day Christopher Tye O hail this joyful day's return, hail to the ascended Lord, who on this day, upon his church, his Spirit has outpoured. And like as cloven tongues of flame, that earth might hear the call, on Pentecost the Spirit came that love may burn in all. Unfailing comfort, heav'nly guide, with rushing wind and fire, O grant your blessings from above, Jesus, our heart's desire. As with your promise, we believe these gifts you have in store, make us now ready to receive that joy forever more. THE DAY OF PENTECOST Acts 2:1-4 THE INVOCATION * CALL TO WORSHIP One: And it shall come to pass afterward, that I shall pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and Your daughters shall prophesy Many: There is neither Jew nor Greek One: Your old men shall dream dreams and your young men shall see visions Many: There is neither slave nor free One: Even upon the menservants and the maidservants I will pour out my spirit.

Many: There is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. One: Renew within us, O Lord, a vision of your kingdom, where the last shall be first and the first shall be last. Many: And all of our neat and ancient walls of division are broken down by the fresh wind of Your Spirit. One: Renew within us, O Lord, a vision of Your kingdom, where the greatest ones are those who serve, Many: And all our gifts are blessed, not by the power that we wield, but by the grace by which we are called. All: Amen. * HYMN On Pentecost They Gathered 237 MUNICH * PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST Myra Knight One: The peace of Christ be with you! Many: And also with you! Please greet one another with this ancient sign of welcome and extension of hospitality and peace. * SONG OF PRAISE Santo, Santo, Santo Iona Community Sung once in Spanish and once in English. Come from the four winds, O Spirit, come breath of God; disperse the shadows over us, renew and strengthen your people. Veni Sancte Spiritus. DISCIPLINE OF SILENCE THE MORNING PRAYER RESPONSE Veni Sancte Spiritus (as above) Verse: You are our only comforter, Peace of the soul. Many: Thanks be to God. Following the lesson, children are invited to meet Stephanie Ford at the back of the Sanctuary for Worship with Children in the Chapel. John 15:26; 16:4b-7 SERMON Church of the Holy Advocacy Marcus McFaul Speak out for those who cannot speak, defend the rights of the poor and needy. ~Proverbs 31:8-9 CALL FOR THE OFFERING OFFERTORY Love Divine Evelyn Larter Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardor glowing; O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, while still my path illuming. Love divine, all love's

excelling, Joy of heaven to earth come down, Fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure unbounded love Thou art, Visit us with Thy salvation, enter every longing heart. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till we become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes its dwelling.
