LENTEN RULES OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. These are the words spoken on Ash Wednesday to those who receive ashes on their forehead. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#2043) states that we are to observe the prescribed days of fasting and abstinence. The Season of Lent is our prime time for fasting and abstinence. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of FAST and ABSTINENCE. All the Fridays of Lent are days of ABSTINENCE. Adults (age 18+) are bound by the law of FAST up to the beginning of their 60th year, meaning you eat one full meal and two smaller meals that do not equal the volume of the full meal. All persons who have completed their 14th year are bound by the law of ABSTINENCE (no eating meat or fowl). Additionally, Catholics who have received their First Communion are bound by Church law to receive Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter Season.
