Jesus Is Transfigured Lesson Aim: To know Jesus is both God and man.

Transcription:

March 2018 Are Dinosaurs in the Bible? As you may or may not know, there has been a resurgence lately in movies about dinosaurs. Jurassic World came out just a few years ago and now this summer its sequel is coming out called Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. They are movies that peak our curiosity about these animals that we know once existed on this earth, but have since gone away. As a result, I get the question on occasion but what about the dinosaurs? Well, did you know the Bible describes creatures that certainly sound like dinosaurs? It often surprises people. In the book of Job, you find two creatures described by God in His response to Job that certainly sound like dinosaur-like creatures made by Him. The first is found in Job 40:15 called the Behemoth. It is the typical Hebrew word for a large animal or beast. However in Job, a particular animal seems to be described by that name. An animal that eats grass like an ox, has great strength in its loins, and is described as having a tail that hangs down or is made stiff like a cedar tree. It is a creature also described as the first or the chief of the works of God and a creature in which the rivers could become turbulent or flooded and not be frightened. These details probably imply that this creature was quite large, perhaps called the chief of God s works because of its great size. Now given these details, no known creature that exists today fits this description. Some have speculated that this could be describing a hippo or elephant because they are large and have no problems in water. However, if you have ever seen the tail of a hippo or elephant, they certainly do not have tails that hang down like a cedar tree. They also do not eat grass like an ox. Some have speculated that it could be a crocodile-type creature because of their tails, but once again crocodiles do not eat grass like an ox and probably would not be described as the chief of God s creation. However, a very large dinosaur like a brontosaurus would fit this description. Therefore, if we believe what the Bible tells us that God created all things, then we would have to say such a creature existed on this earth along with man because the Bible tells us both beasts and man were made on the sixth day of creation by God. In addition to that, we know they were once here because we have the fossil evidence.

Another dinosaur-like creature is also described in Job 41. It is a creature called the Leviathan. It seems to be described as a sea creature, yet is also described as having a back made of rows of shields and having a hide that is very difficult to pierce with a spear. It is also described as sneezing forth light and having fire come from its mouth and smoke from its nostrils. Obviously no known creature fits this description, but a dragon or dinosaur-like creature would. Therefore, as God describes these two creatures he made, it certainly seems to be describing what could be dinosaurs. Now what happened to those dinosaurs? We have no way of knowing. Was perhaps the world s environment different before the flood and so they couldn t survive after it? We believe this could have been the case. Were they perhaps hunted to extinction by man? Genesis 9 tells us that after the flood God tells Noah and his sons that now every beast could be food for them. Could they have come down with some disease? We just don t know, but at the very least, we know they were here as creatures made by God. With that in mind, if the topic of dinosaurs ever comes up and you want to surprise someone with a little bit of knowledge, tell them dinosaurs are in the Bible and take them to Job. It might just spark a conversation that could lead to far more important opportunity. The opportunity to share what the Bible says about Jesus. For unlike the dinosaurs, we can definitively share what happened to him and that is the knowledge that can save. A Help in time of need Amen. February may be the shortest month of the year, but we sure packed enough LOVE into it. The Bible mentions, shows acts of, and tells us to love more times than we could ever possibly count. We used this Valentines month to remember to Love one another just as the bible tells us to do. Our love bug on our classroom window reminded us of this. We also showed love by sharing our Valentines with our friends and singing one of our favorite Jesus songs, A Little Bit of Love Goes a Long, Long Way. This month led us to some fun units on Presidents and shadows. We waited to find out if the Groundhog saw his shadow. Then we had fun with shadows when we learned how they are made and even got to make and see shadows of or own! Both classes got patriotic as Presidents Day approached: the 3 year old class showed it with some handmade necklaces and the 4 year old class made their own Abraham Lincoln log cabins. Both classes enjoyed learning about Presidents and were surprised to find out that they could be president someday. Of course, loving one another became the theme of our Jesus time this month, with the stories of the Good Samaritan and the Lost Son. These stories helped us remember that Jesus loves EVERYONE, even sinners like us, AND we are to love everyone too! Soon we will be reminded that God loves us so much He came to Earth to die for us. As we prepare for the Easter season ahead, we are reminded of what Christ has done for all because GOD LOVES US SO MUCH! REGISTRATION: As of March 1 st there is open registration for the 2018-19 school year. This registration is open to the community, and taken on a first come, first serve basis. The programs currently being offered are: M-W-F mornings (4 year olds) 9:00 am to 12:00 pm T-TH mornings (3 year olds) 9:00 am to 11:30 pm Year round child care (2½ to 6 years old) open from 7:00am to 6:00 pm Jesus Time is a very special and important part of the day at our center. Each week a Bible story, it s theme, and important Bible words are learned. Train up a child in the way he should go, and wen he is old, he will not depart from it Proverbs 22:6 Don t forget to like us on Facebook!

BIG CHANGES have come to the POP Kid Rummage! And we are SO EXCITED! We are celebrating our 10 th year holding the sale! We have moved forward with streamlining our system. Starting with the Spring sale our whole sale is on one system. Everything from registration, bar code labeling system, volunteer registration and more. We increased the seller fee to $10 and that has covered the cost of the program and the barcode scanners we will need for the sale. The turn around on seller payments will be days instead of two weeks. If you are looking to volunteer, but do not sell in the sale, you can sign up for a shift through a link on the church website. It is on the Current Sale tab under the Rummage. If you are not comfortable with this process, please feel free to contact Dena Guziewicz or Cara Shaffer to sign up for a shift. We still have plenty of tasks that help us make the rummage happen twice a year. Thank you for all the support over the past 10 years. We are still going strong and growing. Let s keep it up for another 10 years and counting! Dena

Lutherans For Life March 4 Lent III God made a human body even one crucifixion destroyed His sanctuary (John 2:19). Is this why He bluntly forbids murder (Exodus 20:13), because every human body belongs to Him (Exodus 20:2)? Indeed, He has chosen what is weak, low, labeled not a life (1 Corinthians 1:27-28) to be His own forever. Neither sin nor flesh s shortcomings nullify it. Prayer: Jealous God, possess us heart, body, and life that we may build up. Amen. March 11 Lent IV [Y]ou were dead in trespasses and sins like the rest of mankind (Ephesians 2:1, 3b). One s own capacities or activities don t give human life its value (Ephesians 2:9). The love of God in Christ does that, and it does so universally and infinitely (John 3:16). The very heart of the Gospel holds human life precious, even when impaired by infection or immaturity (Numbers 21:8). We rest refreshed in this grace! Prayer: Gracious God, cause fountains of Your grace to flow through us. Amen. March 18 Lent V My body, my choice ; however, life is not for controlling but for offering and sharing (Mark 10:45). Our Creator bestows life as gift, promise, covenant, connecting us to Him and one another (Jeremiah 31:31-34). Broken covenants become cruel lords (Mark 10:42). Yet still Jesus enters our predicaments and understands our troubles (Hebrews 5:2, 7). No one suffers alone, and He remembers our sins no more. Eternal salvation results! Prayer: Almighty Maker, enable us to share Your life with each other. Amen. March 25 Palm Sunday/Annunciation of Our Lord Whose life matters most? Every human being down to the teeniest and feeblest, since God made sure to incarnate Himself as embryo in Mary s womb and then become completely helpless in crucified execution. How much do they matter? So much that Jesus redeemed them each and all, with His lifeblood as the price. Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, bring forth Your name from our lips so that it draws all people to You. Amen.
