SPIRIT CHECK Through songs, prayers, and preaching, our aim in worship today is to point to Jesus. As we prepare to worship him, we take a moment to check our spirits so we can fully give our praise. Here are some thoughts to help prepare our spirits: We live in a time where it almost feels as though busy-ness is a competition. We want to do all of the things, go to all of the places, and be the best version of ourselves that we can be. We are wired to constantly be on the go. Often, we forget the importance of rest and sabbath. In our scripture readings today we hear about the importance of taking some sabbath time every week. One of the Ten Commandments says that we need to honor the sabbath day and keep it holy. God creates a law that says we need to rest and refuel because if we don t, we will exhaust ourselves and those around us. I believe that life is balancing act of remembering the sabbath day, but also knowing that Jesus wants us to live into our callings as his children. Martin Luther explains the third commandment by saying this: We are to fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching or God s word, but instead keep that word holy and gladly hear and learn it. Worship is, and always will be, a time hear God s word, keep it holy, and gladly hear it. What are some ways that you can remember the sabbath day and keep it holy? How can you protest the culture of busy and remind yourself and others that it is okay to slow down? Please notify an usher if you would like a hearing assistance device. INTO THE WORD Psalm 1 The congregation reads responsively. L Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; C but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night. L They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. L In all that they do, they prosper. C The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. L Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; C for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
