Historical Sketch William Thomas Burton, 1884-1974, of Sulphur, Louisiana founded Burton Industries in the early 1900s. The company controlled several diverse ventures, including mercantile, oil, transportation, banking, and agricultural businesses. The grocery store in Sulphur was in operation for over 80 years. Additionally, Burton Industries operated a sawmill, a shell business, ferries, a sugar mill and a rice farm. Burton Industries ceased operation shortly after the death of W.T. Burton. Scope and Content This collection consists of record books, 1903-1978, describing cash in/out, accounts receivable/payable, invoices, payroll records, and check records.
