UNIT 23 Session 2 Use Week of: 2 Jesus Provided Bread from Heaven BIBLE PASSAGE: Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; John 6:1-14 MAIN POINT: Jesus fed 5,000 people. KEY PASSAGE: John 20:31 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: Why did Jesus perform miracles? Jesus performed miracles to show He is God s Son. SMALL GROUP OPENING (15 20 MINUTES) PAGE 96 LARGE GROUP BIBLE STUDY (10 15 MINUTES) PAGE 98 SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES (20 25 MINUTES) PAGE 100 Leader BIBLE STUDY Jesus disciples had been working hard, teaching people and healing them. Jesus called them to go away with Him to a desolate place so they could rest. By now, Jesus popularity was so great that finding a place to be alone was difficult. When Jesus and His disciples crossed the Sea of Galilee, the crowd of people were already waiting for them on the other side. Jesus saw the crowds. He wasn t frustrated or angry. He didn t tell them to go away. Instead, He had compassion on them because they were lost like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who seeks and saves the lost. (See Luke 19:10; John 10:14.) 92 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 23 Session 2

The miracle Jesus performed that evening feeding 5,000 men plus women and children is the only miracle during Jesus earthly ministry that is recorded in all four Gospels. God was clearly at work. The same God who provided manna for the Israelites in the wilderness multiplied loaves and fish to satisfy the crowd. But Jesus didn t intend to only meet the people s physical needs. He came to satisfy their spiritual needs as well. In John 6:35, Jesus said, I am the bread of life. He said that no one who comes to Him will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in Him will ever be thirsty again. 2 Jesus is the bread that came down from heaven. (See John 6:41.) God provided His Son as the perfect sacrifice to take away our sin. At the first Lord s Supper, Jesus broke bread a symbol of His death on the cross. (See Matt. 26:26.) As you teach preschoolers this Bible story, help them know that God can and will provide for our needs. Preschoolers can trust Him for their daily bread. (See Matt. 6:11.) God met our greatest need in giving us salvation through Jesus. Will He not graciously give us all things? (Rom. 8:32) Additional resources for each session are available at gospelproject.com. The BIBLE STORY Bible Storytelling Tips Use props: Print and cut out the Loaves and Fish printable. Place the loaves and fish in a basket. Ask a preschooler to bring you the basket at the appropriate time. Spread out the images in front of preschoolers. Consider using actual loaves of bread and rubber fish if available. Act it out: Invite the children to act out the giant picnic. Pass a basket around as the children are sitting on the ground, and instruct them to pretend to eat bread and fish. Jesus Provided Bread from Heaven Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; John 6:1-14 Jesus friends had been healing people and teaching them. They were working so hard, they did not even have time to eat! So Jesus said, Let s go to a quiet place and rest. Jesus and His friends got into a boat to cross the sea, but people ran along the shore and followed them. A crowd of people was waiting when Jesus and His friends got to the other side of the sea. Jesus saw the crowd, and He cared about the people. They needed someone to show them how to live and help them. So Jesus taught the people about God and His kingdom, and He healed people who were sick. Now it was getting late, and Jesus friends came to Him and said, Tell the people to go get something to eat. But Jesus said, You give them something to eat. Jesus friends were confused. We can t feed this many people! they said. It would cost a lot of money to buy enough bread for them to eat. How many loaves of bread do you have? Jesus asked. One of Jesus friends said, A boy here has five loaves of bread and two fish, but that is not enough. Jesus told His friends to tell everyone to sit down. So all the people sat down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves of bread and the two fish. He looked up to heaven, and then He blessed the bread. Then Jesus broke the bread and fish into pieces and gave it to His friends. They gave the food to the people, and everyone ate until they were full. 94 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 23 Session 2

Then Jesus told His friends to collect any leftover food. They collected 12 baskets full of bread and fish! Jesus fed about five thousand men that day, plus women and children. Christ Connection: Jesus gave the people food so they would not be hungry. The next day, Jesus said that He is the bread of life. (John 6:35) Only Jesus can give us everything we need. Jesus gives us forgiveness, friendship with God, and life forever with Him. WANT TO DISCOVER GOD S WORD? GET MORE! In today s Bible story, Jesus was teaching people about God and His kingdom, and He was healing people who were sick. It was getting late, and the people needed something to eat. Jesus made sure all the people had the food they needed. Can you guess what Jesus used to feed the people? based on the ability of your group. SAY Good job following the pattern! In today s Bible story, Jesus and His friends got into a boat to cross the sea to find a quiet place to rest, but people ran along the shore and followed them. A crowd of people was waiting when Jesus and His friends got to the other side of the sea. Do you think Jesus was mad that the people were following Him? No way! Jesus cared about the people. They needed someone to show them how to live and help them. Listen to hear how Jesus helped in our Bible story. Play a fishing game Print several copies of the fish portion of the Loaves and Fish printable. Cut out the fish and place a paper clip on each one. Spread the fish on a large sheet of blue paper or in a small wading pool. Make a fishing pole by tying a length of yarn to the end of a dowel. Tie a magnet to the other end of the string. Guide preschoolers to hold the dowel and catch fish by using the magnet to attract the paper clips on the fish. Let children take turns fishing. SAY In today s Bible story, Jesus fed many, many people with only two fish and five loaves of bread. How many people do you think two fish and five loaves of bread could feed? Transition to Bible study To gain the attention of all the preschoolers to move them to Bible study, show the countdown video, flip off the lights, or clap a simple rhythm for the children to copy. Invite preschoolers to dramatically play out being hungry as they move to Bible study. us everything we need. Jesus gives us forgiveness, friendship with God, and life forever with Him. Point to the Bible story picture on the giant timeline or big story circle as you ask the following review questions: 1. Why did Jesus teach the people and heal them? (because He cared about them) 2. Why did Jesus friends tell Jesus to tell the people to leave? (so they could go get something to eat) 3. Why did Jesus friends think they could not feed the people? (There were too many people.) 4. What did Jesus do with the boy s five loaves of bread and two fish? (blessed it and broke it into pieces) 5. How many baskets full of leftover food did Jesus friends collect? (12) Learn the big picture question SAY Our big picture question is, Why did Jesus perform miracles? Jesus performed miracles to show He is God s Son.
