Many of our parishioners have joined this non-profit in their missionary medical work to Haiti to provide relief to persons in need. Doctors, nurses and non-medical volunteers give of their time to focus intentionally on the health needs of this struggling nation of good people. The organization was founded by our local priest Fr. Larry Canavera. I recently received a thank you from the local group, here is what it said: Dear Fr. Vander Steeg and Members of St. Bernard Parish, Over the years the support of the work in Haiti by the parish has been phenomenal. Many parish members are part of the work and the collections help make the work possible! Thank you for your gift of $1595.00! Here is a reflection from Kim Volantuono from our recent surgical mission: Sitting alone on the patio, a soft wind blowing, the trees softly sway in the breeze. The sky is blue with a few white clouds and a soft haze as I look out at the mountains. I reflect on this trip 18 volunteers, 5 surgical days, 3 operating rooms, 99 people s lives we have touched. I am blessed to have this chance, this opportunity it fills my heart. I leave exhausted and yet full of energy. Embrace life. It s the only one we have. In thanks and gratitude, Joan D. Hogan, Finance Committee Please pray for our high school students this week who will be joining Callie, Adam, Deacon Bernie and me in taking part in the service trip called Love Begins Here. The name of the service trip is taken from the words of Mother Teresa of Calcutta who encouraged those who would ask if they could come serve with her to go rather and serve and love the people in their own communities. She understood that love begins here. We will be going down to Appleton all this week helping and serving those in need. Whether that need be due to age, disability, loneliness or poverty, all will be served in a variety of ways. Your support of our mission trips helps root our students in the real world and provides a needed balance from the virtual realities of social media, computers and phones that floods their lives. Pope Francis is adamant that service is the reality that young people need in order to help them experience authentic life, real friendship and tangible love. Thank you for helping us carry out the Holy Father s call to be missionary disciples among our own! Pray for all of us during this week of service. St. Teresa of Calcutta pray for us! Fr. Mark Vander Steeg
JULY 14 & 15, 2018 PAGE The 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick no food, so sack, no money in their belts. (MARK 6:8) How different we are from the Apostles who took nothing when they ventured out to serve God. Today we make our life s journey more difficult because of all the material baggage that we drag along. When we really put God first in everything and put money and possessions second, we experience more freedom to joyfully serve God and others.
