Introduction 2 Corinthians Lesson 9 "My grace is sufficient for you for power is perfected in weakness." 2 Cor. 12:9 In 2 Cor. Chapters 10-12, Paul defends his apostolic authority against the false apostles at Corinth But, instead of defending himself, he focuses on defending the gospel The last argument he makes in 2 Cor. 12:1-10 is that the Lord s power is perfected through weakness including painful suffering 2 Introduction Paul s Thorn In The Flesh Paul did not lose faith even though God did not remove his thorn in the flesh Through God s sufficient grace, Paul was able to endure excruciating pain, joyously, abundantly laboring as an apostle, and not proudly exalting himself above others When suffering, we too can learn to rejoice and gladly serve the Lord depending on His sufficient grace 3 2Co 12:7 Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me--to keep me from exalting myself! 4 Paul s Thorn In The Flesh Although often debated, the Scriptures do not reveal what Paul s thorn is But, the purpose of his thorn is revealed, to keep Paul from exalting himself due to the inexpressible revelations he received God s purpose to humble Paul overruled Satan s purpose to torment and discourage him Paul Had Received Inexpressible 2Co 12:1 Boasting is necessary, though it is not profitable; but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2Co 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago--whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows--such a man was caught up to the third heaven. 5 6

Paul Had Received Inexpressible 2Co 12:3 And I know how such a man-- whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows-- 2Co 12:4 was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak. Paul Had Received Inexpressible 2Co 12:5 On behalf of such a man I will boast; but on my own behalf I will not boast, except in regard to my weaknesses. 2Co 12:6 For if I do wish to boast I will not be foolish, for I will be speaking the truth; but I refrain from this, so that no one will credit me with more than he sees in me or hears from me. 7 8 2Co 12:7 Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me--to keep me from exalting myself! 9 1Co 10:12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 1Co 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. 10 1Co 4:6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other. God s Purpose Overrules Satan's Purpose Rom 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 11 12

Paul Prays For The Lord To Remove The Thorn 2Co 12:8 Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. Paul Prays For The Lord To Remove The Thorn Php 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Php 4:7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 13 14 God s My Grace Is Sufficient For You 2Co 12:9 And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 15 God s My Grace Is Sufficient For You 1Co 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 1Co 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. 1Co 15:11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. 16 for power is perfected in weakness." 2Co 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; 2Co 4:8 we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; for power is perfected in weakness." 2Co 4:9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 2Co 4:10 always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 17 18

2Co 12:9 And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 2Co 12:10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am Php 4:11 Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. Php 4:13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. strong. 19 20 2Co 11:21 To my shame I must say that we have been weak by comparison. But in whatever respect anyone else is bold--i speak in foolishness--i am just as bold myself. 2Co 11:22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I. 2Co 11:23 Are they servants of Christ?--I speak as if insane--i more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. 2Co 11:24 Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes. 21 22 2Co 11:25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. 2Co 11:26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on 2Co 11:27 I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. 2Co 11:28 Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches. the sea, dangers among false brethren; 23 24

2Co 11:29 Who is weak without my being weak? Who is led into sin without my intense concern? 2Co 11:30 If I have to boast, I will boast of what pertains to my weakness. 25 1Pe 5:5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. 1Pe 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 1Pe 5:7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. 26 1Pe 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1Pe 5:9 But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. 1Pe 5:10 After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. 27 28 "My grace is sufficient for you for power is perfected in weakness." 1.
