Spiritual Indigestion Wise parents warn their young children against gulping down their food and then hastily leaving the table before others have finished eating. Aside from promoting good manners, such admonitions also foster good health: proper digestion -- the assimilation of food to the human body -- requires time. The same applies to spiritual food -- we need time to digest what we receive. The Church, which Catholic tradition calls Mother, teaches good manners. This happens in and through the directives of the Roman Missal, which calls for a significant amount of silence after partaking of Holy Communion and before the final blessing. At St. Patrick s, we follow this directive at our Masses. Living as we do in a very noisy world, some find this silence interminable, even unbearable to the point of fleeing. Someone recently complained, Yes, but what am I supposed to be doing with that gap of time? Can t we move on? Mass is too long! Recognizing the need for something to do, the Roman Missal actually provides a short, yet rich, prayer to be said by the priest after Holy Communion. Fr. Josef Jungmann, in his master-piece, The Mass of the Roman Rite (1959), recalls that this very ancient prayer was originally meant for the people, not just the priest. Here s the full text: What has passed our lips as food, O Lord, may we possess in purity of heart, that what has been given us in time may be our healing for eternity. This beautiful prayer, easily memorized, encourages us to move beyond the physical/ visible dimension of the Sacrement to the spiritual/invisible dimension. Even in a state of extreme distraction, we always know that something has passed our lips as food. After all, we can feel and taste the Host. That s the easy part. More difficult is the act of recognizing that the Body of Christ must move from one s lips to one s heart, which is the proper resting place of the Lord. In a sense, then, the heart is the place of spiritual digestion. This, of course, requires time and silence. Excessive rushing and the absence of silence produces spiritual indigestion, which makes the Eucharist distasteful because its true meaning is lost. Moreover, habitual indigestion can lead to a loss of genuine faith. Good table manners show respect for parents, who graciously provide the food, and for other family members, who wait for one another patiently and with forbearance. The same is true of Mass. Those who partake of the supper of the Lamb -- the greatest meal of all -- need lots of time to digest the Lamb who travels from the lips to the heart. Fr. Michael Kerper
