On Monday noon through Wednesday noon the priests of the Diocese will gather in Iowa City for our Annual Clergy Days. Our presenter for the days will be Sister Dianne Bergante, a renowned Old Testament Scholar. Her topic will be the Psalms At each weekend Mass we pray one of the Psalms. They are written to be sung, but unfortunately, are spoken at some parishes. Many of the Psalms were composed by David. We might be familiar with the setting of the time the Hebrews were held in captivity by the streams of Babylon. We sat and wept. The Old Testament scriptures have 150 Psalms. We use them at various times during the church years. Check and see what Psalm we are using this weekend, especially the refrain. Christmas Mass Schedule: Mechanicsville: 4:30 PM Christmas Eve, Fr. Page 4 St. Mary s Mechanicsville WEB Info: www.stmarystipton.net Reading I : Wisdom 11:22-12:2 To God, the universe is a drop of morning dew. Wisdom literature in the Bible is a rich source of spirituality. In this passage, we are assure that God will have mercy on us always. We are reminded that God created all that is, and loves all that he created! Reading II : 2 Thessalonians 1:11-2:2 We pray for you always. Paul prays that the community in Thessalonica may be faithful to the message preached about Jesus Christ. He addresses the rumor in the community that Christ would be returning soon, a common belief in the early years of the Faith. He urges them not to be agitated by this rumor, but to go on living their lives faithfully. Gospel : Luke 19:1-10 Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus. Here we see Jesus' compassion and sense of justice reach a peak. He demonstrates his love of the sinner by eating with them, something that would have been seen by his detractors as very out-of-place for a rabbi such as Jesus. But as usual, he persists and teaches a valuable lesson: take in the outcast and sinner first and they will later be healed. Stewardship: A Way of Life And how could a thing remain, unless you willed it; or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you? Wisdom 11:25 These words from the Book of Wisdom, remind us that every single gift, skill, talent or blessing that we have has been called forth for us from God. The incredible abundance that surrounds us is all given to us by our heavenly Father for a reason. These gifts are not given for us to hoard but rather for us to share.
G St. Mary s Mechanicsville WEB Info: www.stmarystipton.net Page 5 A t that time, Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house." And he came down quickly and received him with joy. When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner." But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost." Luke 19:1-10 R R Questions of the Week Theme: Jesus' love transforms all people and all things! Breaking Open the Word Suggested text for faith sharing: Today s Gospel Step One: Listen to the Word. As you listen to the familiar story in today s reading, what wordor phrase catches your ear? What image from the story strikes you? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: Jesus showed that he loved Zacchaeus by having supper with him. How does Jesus show his love for you? Question for Youth: Jesus saw Zaccheaus as he was mistakes and all. What masks, if any, do you hide behind so others won't see who you really are? Who do you trust to see your true self? Question for Adults: Why do you suppose Jesus was so kind to Zacchaeus? What lesson do you draw from this reading regarding those who are considered "public sinners" today? ZACCHAEUS AND THE SYCAMORE Jericho is a city of turning points. It is an oasis that serves as a crossroads between Galilee and Jerusalem and between Israel, Jordan and Egypt. It is here that Jesus will take the road that will lead to Calvary. It is also the home of a hated and rich, mercenary tax collector named Zacchaeus. His fellow Jews see him only as a collaborator with the Roman occupation forces. He has reached the peak of his career but is unsatisfied. He has few if any friends. His last chance may be to reform by turning to Jesus. Being short of stature, he climbs a sycamore tree. This is not the stately plant of America, nor that of Eurasia. It is a variety of fruit tree, often known as the "poor man's fig". There is a bit of satire in the fact that he climbs a plant grown for the impoverished http://www.silk.net/reled/lonsdale.htm
