EPISTLE READING: St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6 BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." GOSPEL READING: The Gospel according to St. Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." Lenten Green Tips Waste less food so that you cut consumption and have more to give to the poor. (Adapted from a posting by Fr. Sietsema of Lansing, MI. ) Triage your refrigerator and freezer by placing things in front that need to be used soon. Do a waste audit by keeping a list of what food gets tossed. Then, alter your shopping habits. Make a list before shopping to eliminate unneeded impulse purchases. Use leftovers creatively in stews, soups, hashes, and casseroles. Compost your food scraps instead of adding to a landfill. Iconography Phase 3 Those interested in donating an icon for Phase 3 are encouraged to review the updated list of available icons. The process is the same as Phase 2 -- "first come, first served". Please include the Code Number on the memo line of the check. If another means of donating the funds is used, the Code Number should be either written on paper or sent in an email to avoid any confusion. When full payment is received, the icon is then considered donated and thus not available to anyone else. A display of sketches for Phase 3 is in the Founders' Walk. If a particular Saint is not included on the present list, please inform Father Bill in written form which other Saint might be considered. When Dr. Kordis begins his work, more Saints may be included. Parish Directory The 2017 Parish Directory is now available online on our new Members ONLY page. FOURTH WEEK OF GREAT LENT Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (3) Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. All-Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, be gracious unto our sins. Master, pardon our transgressions. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Your Name's sake. Lord have mercy. (3) Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. Psalm 128 (NKJV) Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways. 2 When you eat the labor of your hands, You shall be happy, and it shall be well with you. 3 Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the very heart of your house, Your children like olive plants all around your table. 4 Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord. 5 The Lord bless you out of Zion, And may you see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life. 6 Yes, may you see your children s children. Peace be upon Israel! Prayer Praised by the heavenly powers with hymns that are never silent and doxologies that never cease, fill my lips with praise of You, that I may fitly magnify Your holy name. And grant me a portion and share with all who truly fear You and keep Your commandments; at the intercession of the holy Theotokos and of all the saints. For You are a good and loving God, and to You we offer the glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen. PRAYER OF EPHRAIM O Lord and Master of my life! Take from me the spirit of sloth, faintheartedness, lust of power, and idle talk. But give, rather, the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Your servant. Yes, Lord and King! Grant me to see my own errors and not to judge my brother, for You are blessed unto the ages of ages. Amen.
