STEVE!

Dear Holy Spirit Parish: He instructed them to take nothing for the journey. (Mark 6:8) It is always more comfortable being the expert. In this world of constant comparison, the assumption is that if you have what someone else doesn t, you must be a better person. Having the answers gives one a sense of superiority and confidence. That is in this world. In Jesus world, everything is always turned upside down. He strips the disciples of what they have that they might discover, in their own need, God s presence and action in their lives. If this is confusing, ask one of our youth who spent this past week on mission in Chicago, stripped. They weren t even asked to dish out food or hand out clothes, all things that would have given them the satisfaction of being the helper. Instead they were asked to just sit and hold a conversation with someone whom society has marginalized. With nothing to hide behind, our youth had a heart to heart encounter with someone in poverty and in that heart to heart place, met God. I didn t go to Chicago, but I am feeling a bit stripped myself. Or at least displaced from the position of expert and answer man. It has been back to school this past week. The process of learning names and finding where things are kept has begun. But when I say back to school I am thinking more about the big things like learning how to be a pastor in a parish with such a talented staff and ministries that are well developed and bearing great fruit. I say it again, there are some very large footprints left by the great pastors who have served here. Much of my week was spent meeting with each staff person to learn how things happen in this parish. In particular I have been anxious to know the history of the building campaign and where things are at presently. I will expand my conversations beyond the staff to those on the planning committees and our Councils in the coming weeks. Clearly there has been a tremendous amount of effort and investment of resources in the Building Upon A Firm Foundation campaign. After a summer of pastor s research and parishioner s rest, we will be ready to move the campaign forward in the fall. In the meantime, let us not be alarmed if the Lord isn t giving us the answers we want or the resources we feel we need. He had pretty good results with his disciples by instructing them to take nothing for the journey. Fr. Steve 838 Fremont St., 344-9117 2108 Fourth Ave., 345-6500 MISSION STATEMENT Disciples called to worship, sent to serve. VISION STATEMENT Holy Spirit Parish, encouraged by a legacy of faith, hope and love, commits to welcoming all believers and seekers; engaging college students to grow in faith; reaching out to those who have left the Church and to those who do not know Christ; encouraging members to share generously of time, talent and treasure; and living a Gospel response in our parish, our community, and our world. PASTORAL COUNCIL FINANCE COUNCIL Chairs: BUILDING UPON A FIRM FOUNDATION Chairs:, Pastor frsteve@holyspiritstevenspoint.org pacellicatholicschools.com 341-2445 Joining Our Parish: Fr. Steve would be glad to talk with you about parish membership. Send him an email at frsteve@holyspiritstevenspoint.org or call him at 344-9117 to make an appointment. Celebrating Baptism: Baptism is celebrated at Lord s Day Mass at various times of the liturgical year. Caring for the Sick: If you or a loved one are seriously ill, homebound or anticipating surgery, please call Fr. Steve to schedule a visit and/or the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Facebook: Like us at Holy Spirit Parish and Point Catholic.

Transitions of Grace New Life: This weekend we welcome James Emmanuel Kiefer to faith through the waters of baptism. He is the son of Daniel and Emily Kiefer. Eternal Life: We acknowledge the passing of Cornelia Klish and Jack Larsen. A Note from Fr. Tom On my final weekend, in acknowledging my gratitude to our parish and the opportunity to be your pastor, as well as my anticipation of beginning a new adventure in Wausau, I failed in a rather significant regard: I failed to thank God. So, thanks be to God for the blessing of my years in Stevens Point, for the people and places and experiences of those years, and for countless, wonderful experiences of God's grace. Thanks also for the generous outpouring of best wishes as I moved on; sadness at my leaving; gratitude for my service to our community. The farewell weekend, the cards, visits, emails and other encounters in the streets, stores and coffee shops over the past month have been overwhelming and humbling. Finally, Garrison Keillor once finished a farewell monologue on his public radio show by describing the people of his fictional Lake Wobegon sitting in the Chatterbox Cafe on a rainy day drinking coffee, eating donuts and solving the problems of the world. That, he said, is how he chose to leave them and remember them. Similarly, I choose to remember you gathered in our church on a beautiful Lord's Day, many joyful, others struggling with life's realities. You're singing heartily, you're reverent and joyful as you seek a renewed strength to recognize and honor the movement of our Holy Spirit, knowing that you will be sent from there, sent to serve, to renew the face of the earth. Of time, talent and treasure GIFTS OF STEWARDSHIP In his letter to the Ephesian community, St. Paul teaches that God, the Father, has established a divine plan to bring all of creation to Christ and that He has blessed us with the divine gifts to help implement that plan. Christian stewards know what their gifts are and remain committed to using them in the service of the Lord. Do we know what our gifts are? Do we believe that God has given us these gifts? Are we committed to using our gifts to serve the Lord? Hey Holy Spirit Parish! Your NEXT Mission: Should You Choose To Accept It (PART 2 we couldn t fit them all last week)...is to pray for the following young people who have just returned from some onsite living and learning this summer. These students returned this weekend from living in an intentional community with the people of the Darst Center in Chicago. They spent the week learning about Catholic Social Teaching and encountering in a direct way the person of Jesus in those experiencing poverty, homelessness, hunger, violence, displacement and other forms of marginalization. You have been asked to support them and their families in several ways, including prayer and we will be praying for you! As has become our tradition, we asked them some *hard-hitting journalistic questions* to help you get to know them and maybe our parish and Church a little better. Here s what we asked them and their responses: 1.) Favorite liturgical color Molly Violet/Purple Advent/Lent Mason Violet/Purple Advent/Lent Emily White Christmas/Easter/Feasts 2.) Pope Francis shows up at your door and wants to see the coolest thing in Stevens Point BESIDES Holy Spirit Parish (which is obviously the coolest thing in town). Where do you take him?
