PAUL S FIRST MISSIONARY JOURNEY ACTS 13 Paul, Barnabas, and others had been preaching and building the church in Antioch. Then God called Paul and Barnabas on a mission to preach the gospel through the Roman Empire to the west. Read the verses below. Find the word Cyprus in the verses below and underline it. That is an island where the two missionaries went to preach the gospel. It s in the Mediterranean Sea. Find it on the map (a few pages before this one) and circle it. ACTS 13 A NEW CALLING 2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. 3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. 4 So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. 5 And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister. ARTICLE OF FAITH 5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. Verse 2 says that the church leaders fasted and prayed and then laid their hands on Paul and Barnabas before they sent them on their mission. What does that mean? Read Article of Faith 5 in the box to the left. Look how Paul and Barnabas call to preach the gospel followed the pattern of calling leaders in God s church. 1. The church leaders were inspired to call Paul and Barnabas on a mission. 2. They were given authority to preach the gospel by others who had the priesthood. 3. They were given power to preach the gospel and perform ordinances like baptism. Discover the Life of Christ 2009 www.discoverthescriptures.com, Page 56

PAUL AND THE FALSE PROPHET ACTS 13 In their journeys, Paul and Barnabas met a leader who was interested in learning about Jesus. However, a certain false prophet tried to turn the man against Paul and Barnabas. Read the verses on the right. Circle the name of the false prophet. Underline what happened to him. Why do you think Elymas was blinded? Paul and Barnabas continued to preach about Christ. They were trying to convince the Jews that Jesus was the promised Messiah that they had been waiting for. They went to the synagogues and read the prophecies of the Messiah from the scriptures. Then they told the people how Jesus Christ fulfilled all the prophecies. Read one of Paul s sermons to the Jews in the verses below. ACTS 13 PAUL PREACHES OF CHRIST 26 Men and brethren, children Abraham...to you is the word of this salvation sent. 27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem though they found no cause of death in [Jesus], yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain...and [they] laid him in a sepulchre. 30 But God raised him from the dead: 31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people. 32 And we declare unto you glad tidings [God] he hath raised up Jesus again! ACTS 13 THE FALSE PROPHET 6 They found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus: 7 Which was with the deputy of the country... who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. 9 Then Paul, filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on [Elymas] 10 And said, Thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? 11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord. 38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins. Paul blinded the false prophet, Elymas. Discover the Life of Christ 2009 www.discoverthescriptures.com, Page 57

REJECTION BY THE JEWS ACTS 13 Many people liked Paul s message and the whole city together came to hear him speak. But some of the city leaders didn t like Paul s sudden popularity. Read the verses on the right to find out what happened next. Use the information to fill in the blanks below. The Jews and the wanted to hear Paul s message. On the Sabbath day, the whole together came to hear the word of God. The city leaders were filled with when they saw the multitudes of people listening to Paul. Although most of the Jewish leaders did not believe Paul s words, the Gentiles (non-jewish people) received the gospel and were glad. They the word of the Lord. The Jewish leaders stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and threw them out of the city. Paul and Barnabas, however, were filled with and with the. ACTS 13 PREACHING TO THE GENTILES 42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. 43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. 44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you [Jews]: but seeing ye put it from you (didn t believe), lo, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. 48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. 49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region. 50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. 52 [But] the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost. PAUL IS LEFT FOR DEAD, ACTS 14 While Peter and the church members in Jerusalem faced continuous persecution from the Jewish leaders, Peter and Barnabas continued travelling and preaching the gospel to anyone who would listen. In a city called Iconium, they went to a synagogue to preach. A great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed, but the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil against the brethren (Acts 14:1-2). The people of the city tried to stone Peter and Barnabas, but the missionaries were able to escape. In the city of Lystra, they began to preach again. There they met a man who had been a cripple since birth. When Paul saw the man, and saw that he had faith in God, he said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And [the crippled man] leaped and walked (Acts 14:9-10). The people of Lystra called Paul and Barnabas gods and wanted to make sacrifices to them. The people of Lystra were amazed and called Paul and Barnabas gods. Soon though, the people turned against the missionaries. Some old enemies came to the city from Iconium and Antioch. They stirred up the people of Lystra and convinced them that Paul was evil. The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was dead, drug him out of the city gate and left him. Paul s work was not finished, though, and the Lord gave him strength. As the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe. And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith (Acts 14:20-22). One of Paul s converts in Lystra was Timothy, who later became a trusted companion and helper to Paul. We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Paul Paul had great faith even though he faced many trials! Discover the Life of Christ 2009 www.discoverthescriptures.com, Page 59

THE END OF PAUL S FIRST MISSION, ACTS 14 Paul and Barnabas had travelled far on their first mission and faced many trials. They had begun their mission in Antioch not knowing what they would face, but they had courage and faith in God. They were determined to do God s will. After being stoned, nearly to death, in Lystra, Paul and Barnabas immediately returned to preaching. When they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed (Acts 14:23). They travelled through the areas of Pisidia, Pamphylia, Perga, Attalia, and finally back to Antioch, where they gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles (Acts 14:27). Look back on the lessons you have read about Paul. In the space below, list some of the experiences that he faced that helped him develop faith in God. MAP OF PAUL S FIRST MISSIONARY JOURNEY Look at this map of Paul s first missionary journey with Barnabas. They began their mission in. From there, they took a boat across the Mediterranean Sea to the island of, where they preached the gospel in Salamis and Paphos. After preaching in Perga, they travelled to another city of Antioch and then to, where they were cast out of the city. In, Paul was stoned and left for dead. But God gave him strength, and he continued his work there, converting Timothy, who would later become a missionary companion. After teaching in Derbe, Paul and Barnabas returned home to Antioch.
