ATTENDANCE #1 WHY DOES THE FAITHFUL CHILD OF GOD ATTEND EVERY SERVICE? Intro. A. The problem of attendance has become so acute in some churches that they have resorted to man-made gimmicks to correct it, e.g., "the entertainment craze." 1. God compels men to be faithful to him only through the teaching of the gospel. B. In this lesson we want to look at the principles in the gospel which cause the faithful Christian to never miss a service. 1. This lesson could be entitled, "The blessings for faithful attendance." C. We will follow with a lesson on "The sins that one involves himself in when he wilfully neglects the assembly." 1. Notice that our question says, "Why does the faithful child of God attend every service?" a. We are speaking here of all the services--sun. morning Bible study & worship, Wed. Bible study. b. We are not speaking of when one is "providentially" hindered; that is, when he misses through no fault of his own. II. COMMANDS ARE FULFILLED. A. He meets the command of Heb. 10:25.- (1901 ASV) not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh. 1. "Not forsaking" -- a negative command. 2. "The assembling" -- it does not say the "assembly," but the "assembling." a. It is a verb participle that refers to the act of assembling. Thus, it includes all the assemblies of the church--sun. night, Wed. night, Gospel meetings, business meetings for the men. b. It is not an optional matter. Attending gospel meetings of others congregations is optional because that is not the assembling of ourselves together. Where one is a member, God did not give us a choice in the matter. B. He gives God the worship that He seeks. Matt. 4:10; John 4:24 1. Matthew 4:10 (1901 ASV) ---- Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 1 2. John 4:24 (1901 ASV) ---- God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth. C. He meets with the Lord. Matt. 18:20 (1901 ASV) ---- For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. III. HE GROWS AND DEVELOPS SPIRITUALLY. A. The design of Bible Classes (Heb. 5:12-14; Titus 2:1-6; Eph. 4:11-16) 1. Hebrews 5:12-14 (1901 ASV) ---- For when by reason of the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need again that some one teach you the rudiments of the first Page 1 of 8

principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of solid food. 13For every one that partaketh of milk is without experience of the word of righteousness; for he is a babe. 14But solid food is for fullgrown men, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil. 2. Titus 2:1-6 (1901 ASV) ---- 2 But speak thou the things which befit the sound doctrine: 2that aged men be temperate, grave, sober-minded, sound in faith, in love, in patience: 3that aged women likewise be reverent in demeanor, not slanderers nor enslaved to much wine, teachers of that which is good; 4that they may train the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5to be sober-minded, chaste, workers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed: 6the younger men likewise exhort to be sober-minded: 3. Ephesians 4:11-16 (1901 ASV) ---- And he gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ: 13till we all attain unto the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a fullgrown man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14that we may be no longer children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; 15but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ; 16from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in due measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love. B. The design of Preaching - (2 Tim 4:2; Col. 1:28) 1. 2 Timothy 4:2 (1901 ASV) ---- preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 2. Colossians 1:28 (1901 ASV) ---- whom we proclaim, admonishing every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ; 3. Hearing all of the sermons and attending all of the Bible classes helps one to grow and develop into a mature Christian. Heb. 5:12-14 (already noted) C. The design of Singing - (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16) 1. Ephesians 5:19 (1901 ASV) ---- speaking one to another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 2. Colossians 3:16 (1901 ASV) ---- Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God. D. The design of Prayer (Acts 2:42,46,47; 4:24-31) 1. Acts 2:42 (1901 ASV) ---- And they continued stedfastly in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers. 2. Acts 2:46 (1901 ASV) ---- And day by day, continuing stedfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart, 3. Acts 2:47 (1901 ASV) ---- praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to them day by day those that were saved. Page 2 of 8

4. Acts 4:24-31 (1901 ASV) ---- And they, when they heard it, lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, O Lord, thou that didst make the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that in them is: 25who by the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David thy servant, didst say, Why did the Gentiles rage, And the peoples imagine vain things? 26The kings of the earth set themselves in array, And the rulers were gathered together, Against the Lord, and against his Anointed: 27for of a truth in this city against thy holy Servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together, 28to do whatsoever thy hand and thy council foreordained to come to pass. 29And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants to speak thy word with all boldness, 30while thy stretchest forth thy hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of thy holy Servant Jesus. 31And when they had prayed, the place was shaken wherein they were gathered together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spake the word of God with boldness. E. He is comforted and encouraged by having spiritual fellowship with others. Rom. 1:12; 15:32 1. Romans 1:12 (1901 ASV) ---- that is, that I with you may be comforted in you, each of us by the other s faith, both yours and mine. a. Romans 15:32 (1901 ASV) ---- that I may come unto you in joy through the will of God, and together with you find rest. 2. All of us are in need of the fellowship, teaching, encouragement, and spiritual strength derived from the services. Why not attend every service to take advantage of the blessings? Those who don't attend faithfully often miss important lessons (such as this one) which they sorely need. IV. SO THE CHURCH CAN FUNCTION PROPERLY. A. The mission of the church is accomplished through our meeting and working together. The church cannot function without assemblies. B. The church is like a body, needing every individual part to do its share (Eph 4:15-16; 1 Cor. 12:12-19) 1. Ephesians 4:15-16 (1901 ASV) ---- but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ; 16from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in due measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love. a. 1 Corinthians 12:12-19 (1901 ASV) ---- For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ. 13For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14For the body is not one member, but many. 15If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body. 16And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were Page 3 of 8

hearing, where were the smelling? 18But now hath God set the members each one of them in the body, even as it pleased him. 19And if they were all one member, where were the body? 2. Visiting the sick, Helping the needy, Teaching the lost, Strengthening the weak...etc. 3. A church is no stronger than the collective strength of its members a. Cain is only as strong as it s weakest link C. Do you want the church to grow? 1. I heard of a powerful case example which was done by brother C.R. Nichol many years ago. He went in to begin a gospel meeting and after seeing the very poor attendance on the first night, stayed away the second night. When they asked him where he was, he replied, "If some can stay home, I can stay home." After this was spread around in the community, the attendance got right for the rest of the meeting. D. If I don't become actively involved in the functioning unit that God ordained, I'm failing in my responsibility to God. V. FOR A GOOD EXAMPLE AND INFLUENCE. A. Christians are to set a good example. 1 Tim. 4:12; Titus 2:7-8 1. 1 Timothy 4:12 (1901 ASV) ---- Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an ensample to them that believe, in word, in manner of life, in love, in faith, in purity. 2. Titus 2:7-8 (1901 ASV) ---- in all things showing thyself an ensample of good works; 8 in thy doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of us. 3. Christians are to shine as light in the world. Matt. 5:14-16; Phil 2:15 a. Matthew 5:14-16 (1901 ASV) ---- Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. 15Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house. 16Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. b. Philippians 2:15 (1901 ASV) ---- that ye may become blameless and harmless, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye are seen as lights in the world, B. Faithful attendance is essential for good influence. 1. It sets a good example before babes in Christ, and to the weak. 2. It influences our friends, relatives, and neighbors--all outsiders. 1 Pet. 2:12 a. 1 Peter 2:12 (1901 ASV) ---- having your behavior seemly among the Gentiles; that, wherein they speak against you as evil-doers, they may by your good works, which they behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. C. It is a great support to the preacher, and to all others. 1. Let not any of the older widows say, "There's nothing I can do," or "I'm not much help to the church." Your faithful attendance is a great encouragement to all. a. You are an encouragement in the Bible classes because you can be depended on to be there. The church can have any type of service and can depend on you to support Page 4 of 8

it. VI. TO HOLD FAST HIS ALLEGIANCE, PROFESSION AND HOPE. A. He holds fast that which he confessed when baptized. Acts 8:36-37; Rom. 10:9 1. Acts 8:36-37 (1901 ASV) ---- And as they went on the way, they came unto a certain water; and the eunuch saith, Behold, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37And Philip said, If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 2. Romans 10:9 (1901 ASV) ---- because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved: 3. To confess that Jesus is the Son of God or that He is Lord is essentially the same. a. To confess Him as the Son of God is to say that he is Divine, and you will now submit to His laws. b. To confess Him as Lord is to say that He will now be ruler of your life. B. It is holding fast his confession. Heb. 4:14 1. Hebrews 4:14 (1901 ASV) ---- Having then a great high priest, who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. C. He holds fast the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. Heb. 3:5-6 1. Hebrews 3:5-6 (1901 ASV) ---- And Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were afterward to be spoken; 6but Christ as a son, over his house; whose house are we, if we hold fast our boldness and the glorying of our hope firm unto the end. 2. Let us show diligence and be not slothful. Heb. 6:11-12 a. Hebrews 6:11-12 (1901 ASV) ---- And we desire that each one of you may show the same diligence unto the fulness of hope even to the end: 12that ye be not sluggish, but imitators of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. VII. IT IS PUTTING CHRIST AND THE KINGDOM FIRST. Matt. 6:33 (1901 ASV) ---- But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. A. It is seeking things above. Col. 3:1-3 1. Colossians 3:1-3 (1901 ASV) ---- 3 If then ye were raised together with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated on the right hand of God. 2Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are upon the earth. 3For ye died, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 2. It is wrong to stay home on Sunday because of aches and pains, but on Monday go to work, the grocery store, or the mall when we have the same aches and pains. B. It is putting Christ first (Luke 14:26); it is putting him before family (Matt. 10:37-38). 1. Luke 14:26 (1901 ASV) ---- If any man cometh unto me, and hateth not his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. a. Matthew 10:37-38 (1901 ASV) ---- He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy Page 5 of 8

of me. 38And he that doth not take his cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me. 2. Some stay home because of family visiting. This is not putting Christ first. 3. I heard of a woman who stayed home from Sunday morning services to fix a meal so she could have the preacher over for lunch. However, when the preacher heard of it, he didn't go to the sister's home. She was angry at him for this; however, he did the right thing. C. It shows that our attitude is right. 1. Not like some who say, "What is the least I can do and still go to heaven?" but "How much can I do for the Lord" or, "I want to do all I can for the Lord." VIII. HELPS FULFILL HIS DUTIES TO OTHERS. A. Helps parents fulfill their duties to their children. Eph. 6:4 (1901 ASV) ---- And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but nurture them in the chastening and admonition of the Lord. B. It brings us more knowledge so that we can always give the right answers. 1 Pet. 3:15 (1901 ASV) ---- but sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear: C. It helps fulfill the commands of exhorting our brethren. Heb. 3:13 (1901 ASV) ---- but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called To-day; lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin: 1. We are not to go to everyone's house or call daily--but on Sundays and Wednesdays we have an opportunity to fulfill this command. IX. IT IS BEARING FRUIT AND DOING GOOD WORKS. A. We are to bear much fruit (John 15:8) and to be full of good works (James 3:17). 1. John 15:8 (1901 ASV) ---- Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; and so shall ye be my disciples. a. James 3:17 (1901 ASV) ---- But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. 2. Notice he did not just say, "bear fruit" or "have good works," but "bear much fruit and "be full of good works." B. We are to be zealous of good works (Titus 2:14), and always abounding in the work of the Lord (I Cor. 15:58). 1. Titus 2:14 (1901 ASV) ---- who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own possession, zealous of good works. a. 1 Corinthians 15:58 (1901 ASV) ---- Wherefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not vain in the Lord. 2. We are to be ready unto every good work (Titus 3:1), and are to be careful to maintain Page 6 of 8

good works (Titus 3:8). a. Titus 3:1 (1901 ASV) ---- 3 Put them in mind to be in subjection to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready unto every good work, b. Titus 3:8 (1901 ASV) ---- Faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire that thou affirm confidently, to the end that they who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men: 3. The faithful child of God attends every service because he wants to be zealous of, always abounding in, ready unto, and careful to maintain good works. C. We must do good works ourselves and exhort others to do good works. Heb. 10:24 (1901 ASV) ---- and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works; 1. We couldn't rightfully exhort someone to attend on Wednesday nights when we don't attend ourselves. X. IT IS PART OF BEING READY, WATCHING AND WAITING. A. Matt. 24:44; 25:13; Mark 13:33-37 1. Matthew 24:44 (1901 ASV) ---- Therefore be ye also ready; for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh. a. Matthew 25:13 (1901 ASV) ---- Watch therefore, for ye know not the day nor the hour. b. Mark 13:33-37 (1901 ASV) ---- Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. 34It is as when a man, sojourning in another country, having left his house, and given authority to his servants, to each one his work, commanded also the porter to watch. 35Watch therefore: for ye know not when the lord of the house cometh, whether at even, or at midnight, or at cockcrowing, or in the morning; 36lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. 37And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch. 2. What if the Lord came on a Wednesday night and I wasn't with the saints because I was wilfully forsaking? I John 2:28 (1901 ASV) ---- And now, my little children, abide in him; that, if he shall be manifested, we may have boldness, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. B. It is part of enduring unto the end. Matt. 10:22; 24:12-13 1. Matthew 10:22 (1901 ASV) ---- And ye shall be hated of all men for my name s sake: but he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. a. Matthew 24:12-13 (1901 ASV) ---- And because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold. 13But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. 2. It is "redeeming the time" (Eph. 5:16) in our short stay on earth. a. Ephesians 5:16 (1901 ASV) ---- redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 3. I once caught a young college student red-handed one Sunday. His mother had asked me to exhort him. I took my family home after the services and then went to his apartment. I found him sitting in his house-coat watching TV. As I began to show him his neglect, he was very embarrassed. However, he needed to be concerned about what the Lord thought about him, not what the preacher thought. Page 7 of 8

4. Too many people want to make sure that the preacher understands why they were not present at services. Their actions need to be resolved with God, not the preacher. XI. BECAUSE HE WANTS TO GO TO HEAVEN. A. God has promised that many marvelous blessings are waiting in heaven for the faithful. John 14:2; 1 Pet. 1:4; Rev. 22:14 1. John 14:2 (1901 ASV) ---- In my Father s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. a. 1 Peter 1:4 (1901 ASV) ---- unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, b. Revelation 22:14 (1901 ASV) ---- Blessed are they that wash their robes, that they may have the right to come to the tree of life, and may enter in by the gates into the city. 2. The faithful Christian attends every service because he wants to have part in these marvelous things. Concl. B. Why does the faithful child of God attend every service? (Summarize main topics) C. The word of God is powerful and strong on this subject. It overpowers by such strong reasons. D. Psalm 122:1 (1901 ASV) ---- 1I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go unto the house of Jehovah. 1. Let us be glad that we have time and opportunity to worship God. E. Let us take advantage of this great privilege and afford ourselves of the many spiritual blessings that are derived from worship. 1 American Standard Version. 1995 (Electronic edition.).
